Estes Park performing arts theater suffers setback Trustees table purchase option request to January

Full story: Estes Park Trail-Gazette

The drive to establish a top-notch performing arts theater in Estes Park suffered a setback Tuesday when a request to purchase a portion of the town's Riverside parking lot to theater backers was tabled until January.

Read between the lines. The town as a whole doesn't want your Performing Arts and is trying to get you to realize that in a nice sort of way. Try Aspen, Vail, Steamboat, you might have better luck there!

I am not convinced that a performing arts center is the best use for this property. I would suggest that perhaps the town is looking for a use for the property that would generate tax revenue. A performing arts center would probably be a non taxable entity. In addition, if the property in question were taken out of public parking, it would exacerbate and already difficult parking situation for the downtown area.

OwingK.

Because the place will have taxable restaurants and bars.

Has anyone in this godfersaken hole ever heard of parking meters or their relatives, the parking sticker on the dash dispensers?

The parking problem can be solved by keeping people out of downtown with no reason to be downtown.

This this is a pipe dream meant only to suck money into the investors' greedy paws. It will parasitize every other downtown business into bankruptcy, then skedaddle to go rape another bunch of rubes elsewhere. A downtown performing arts center will be too expensive for local amateur groups to rent, and will bring in outside talent that people won't patronize. Open this destined to fail experiment in someone else's backyard.

The Trustees are idiots. They fight against anything that might bring change and create a 21st century Estes Park. The actually think that pouring money into the stupid rodeo and cheap junk sold in summer stalls in Bond Park will drive the future of the Town. What nonsense. Why not support an effort that could bring in people with money; not the usual mouth breathers from the plains who think $50 for a dinner for 4 is expensive. What a waste! We need to change the total business model in Estes Park to include things other than candy and "Made in China" tee shirts. The Mayor and Trustees don't understand this and only support condo builds that will give the local realtors on the Board and local business leaders their precious tax increase. Total losers.

Come clean and just admit it this is not a non-profit organization, this is a shyster organization headed by the head shyster Sharpless Ceiling and her lackey Curtis Globs. The trustees don't want to put something that even the pretend backers don't know what it is. They are going to provide public restrooms? Well, my God, then we should lay down and give them every parking spot in Estes Park and some in Loveland to boot. They think we are a bunch of rubes here, but we are not easily swayed by fantasy 3-D pictures that could just as well represent James Cameron's wet dreams as some actual structure intended to fit in the crap lot that is Sharpless's burn pile.

THis is a middle class vacation town, always has and always will be. I was at this board meeting, they act like this needs to be downtown to bring more people here. People come here for the MOUNTAINS! Say in 10 years, if this is built approx 3.2 million people will visit here, if they don't build it approx 3.2 million will visit here. I own a biz VERY close to where is out of place space hog would be. Trustees should have just put nail in coffin and end this crap. Move and put permanent ice skating rink over there, that would get more use and apply to more people.

This bunch of crooks should be thankful they weren't chased out of town. Instead, they are complaining because they got a reprieve to get their act together. Let's hope they clean house of all the child molesters and start fresh with a plan to put in something that actually would be welcomed here.

Does anyone know just who EPIC is, name wise. Funny that proper names are never mentioned. Could it be that these people are so sneaky and embarased that they don't want the community to know who they are? Sneaky, back room politics.

Really? Some of the comments here are clearly from the retiree section. Sigh... Anytime something that doesn't directly benefit the "ol geezers" of this town gets proposed they immediatly start bashing it. Yes lets not encourage construction of a pretty nice performing arts center that could actually bring something to this town besides the same old boring Xmas parade or half a fireworks show during a windy November night. Come on people! Would you rather have another tacky shop that sells fake indian and cowboy costumes, cheap tshirts and other stupid and useless junk that people just throw away in a year when they go home? Here's a concept, we attract plays, musicals, up and coming artists and have a nice venue in town for locals and front rangers to come up. After the show they can go waste all their money in the tacky stores so the town can collect their sales tax revenue. Heaven forbid something gets built that is different than what retirees vision. It makes me sad that any time something like an arts center or community center gets brought up its immediately shot down by the old folks. Their standard claim of go build this somewhere else where it will be welcomed is getting as old as they are. Shoot down projects like the fake ski area which really are stupid.

If you're bored with this town don't let the door hit you in the rear on you're way out. You seem to be one of the younger whipper snappers who complain there's nothing to do for your poor kids and want the schools etc. to take care of them instead of devoting more of your time to them. And don't blame this on old people, because I am sure you are grossly mis-informed. Old people make up a good portion of the population and if it wasn't for them there wouldn't be an Estes Park. And OH! BY THE WAY! Would you like to guess my age? I bet I'm not as old as you think!!Have a nice life in EP!

Thanks for the laugh! Made my day! Estes Park would (and will) be just fine without decrepit retirees with 1950's mid-America mindsets. It would just be different, and perhaps better.(I'm a young 60, and hopefully will NEVER be the standard American retiree.)

Actually it's not about being bored with this town. There's tons to do in this town but most of it doesn't involve Elkhorn Ave. This is just a good opportunity to take something that is a huge eyesore (a burned down property) and turn it into something that could bring a unique and dare I say different aspect to our town.

I dont even have kids. If I did I wouldn't expect the schools to provide things to do. Although there are a number of extra curricular activities that kids can do through the schools and various other programs in town. I would teach my kids to love the environment we live in and to enjoy it every chance they get.

Dont flatter yourself. EP would do just fine without geezers here and I would imagine it would prob be more progressive and attract more than just mouth breathers. Imagine an EP without retirees driving 10 mph under the speed limit everywhere, going to town meetings to bitch about the development being built nextdoor on a lot zoned for accomodations or writing pointless and absurd letters to the editor to complain about even more pointless things like driving too fast around the elk. Yes life would come to a screeching halt without the old folk.

Im guessing mid 50's by your general attitude of bitterness at change. Or maybe your in your 60's, been here for 5-10 years and think you know everything about EP and should be consulted on every decision thats made.

Lets you and I swap positions here regarding your response. Works both ways my friend. Let's get serious. This town is a Govt. of, by, and for special interests. There's no reason why everybody can't be on the same page and have a clear say so on the future of this good town. Everything seems to always be hush hush. Why can't things such as the Performing Arts be put to public vote? Why do you suppose that this is the third try for the Performing Arts, each try under a different name?

Here's an idea. All you artsy progressives that love your "art" so much, go down the canyon to Boulder. There you will find a wonderful artsy place. I could name other towns in the foothills and mountain areas, but you get the idea.
