Now is the time to act

Full story: Estes Park Trail-Gazette

Estes Park is at an economic crossroads. It can stay the course, relying solely on tourism as the driving force of the local economy, or it can diversify and expand the local economic base.

Excellent! Diversifying the economy in ways that will sustain the community (particularly the demographics) is the only way for the Estes Valley to avoid a downward spiral into becoming another Grand Lake.

The "fiber ring" could indeed be helpful in attracting high-tech companies, but it needs a high-bandwidth connection to the rest of the world, too. Very high-bandwidth, if we're looking to the future.

And it's important not to forget that tourism is not one-dimensional: attracting more of the traditional summer/fall visitors would be a fine thing, but attracting different sorts of visitors would be even finer. More small conferences associated with professional societies, for example, would diversify the tourist industry.

Finally, expanding the economic base means, fundamentally, bringing more money to the Estes Valley from the outside. Retirees who relocate to the Valley do that -- their incomes represent "new" money for the local economy. While more retirees won't help the with demographic issues, the spin-off effects will as the medical center and other local businesses/organizations seek to meet their needs.

Let's all keep our fingers crossed that the final report of this recent study will provide more specifics than we've seen so far.

There is nothing wrong with Grand Lake. Wish we would be more like them

Well put. But please tell us what's wrong with Grand Lake! And would you like to run for office?

I like Grand Lake, but I wouldn't want to live there (as I do Estes Park). No medical center. No real grocery store. Much, much greater seasonality (in terms of its economy) than the Estes Valley.

Maybe I should have picked on Ward. ;)

So, what are going to do to make people come here with wildfires nearby? That was a dumb example.
