Wellness center: an opportunity missed

Full story: Estes Park Trail-Gazette

There's no question that the Estes Park Town Board's 4-2 vote to not approve a contract for the sale of Lot 4 in the Stanley Historic District was a punch in the gut to Stanley Hotel owner John Cullen .

Very sorry to hear that this option on Lot 4 was not given to the voters of this community, we are the people that work, live and die here and have earned the right to decide the future of this town with our right to vote. Since the flood, Estes has been a ghost town and I know of several businesses that have lost thousands, it would be nice to be able to count on a few new visitors all year long.

Typical of the lack of foresight in our community. This could well have been a big year-round economic boost. Ask any merchant whether or not they would like to have more business year round and I can guarantee what their answer would be. We will either be in contention with other mountain towns or we will be a ghost town except for the summer months. Also we are finally blessed with a great medical center staff and it would certainly be nice to keep them. Chances like this do not come often, but once again we have shot ourselves in the foot!

BooHoo, BooHoo. BooHoo! You don't get your own way so all you do is cry. Our trustee's did exactly what they are supposed to do. Maybe we all don't agree with their decision but that's life. Someone mentioned a recall. Consider that the trustee's that voted against John Cullen's Taj Mahall could very well be the same ones that voted to proceed with The Performing Arts fiasco. My point is this. Just what would a recall accomplish, except to make a few cry babies happy. Take the vote with a grain of salt and move on. Estes Park is Mountain Strong, right? It will survive without all the amenities of the big city.

Listening to the whole Town Meeting (thanks for the video), those in favor offered all the positives of growth, jobs, year round income, etc. Those opposed came within 2 camps: Those that opposed the project itself, and those that were concerned with the fast-track style that it was following. The most convincing element I heard within the meeting was that several "trip-wires" had been set in a previous meeting, and if those elements were not met within the timeframe they were defined, the process should terminate. Four of those trip-wires were triggered, 3 because they were late and the 4th because it still had not been completed. Unless they wanted to ignore what they had set in the earlier meeting, they could not in good conscious continue with the fast track method.

Not one of the trustees declared they didn't want the project to occur. They did want process to follow the procedures, and since the fast-track had derailed itself with 4 failures, it needed to be put back to normal speed. And it could, if they wanted to do so.

Actually those trip wires were met... all that was expected to be turned in was turned and approved before the Board meeting. The clown that stood up and scathingly accused the project of failing to do so was completely wrong, no matter his little self-righteous speech. There was a memo from the Town project planner that stated all the submissions were complete. I can post the email if you would like. So that is just typical of how uninformed people say whatever they want and it can go unchallenged.

Also, communities across our country fast-track projects all the time. This was an opportunity and it is what is required in business sometimes. Fast-track does not mean short-cut. This was a professional project with checks and balances along the way to make it a viable project for the community. The fast-tracking was a compression of time not a reduction of submittal requirements.

Your article does not belong on top stories. It should be under Opinion !

I always thought the role of a newspaper was to report the news objectively.

EP Trail Gazette declared their opinion rather than reporting the facts.

They do this all the time---=that's why their readership has plummeted in the past years----they don't know how to report the facts...and their opinions are always given as fact..

a medical center that economically RAPES the residents----They had no business getting involved with that high roller-----they have a multitude of problems themselves---like charging $127 per minute for their surgery room... We need to get rid of all of them...

Tuesday evening was not about the project. It was about the peoples right to vote. You should be offended, regardless of whether you are for or against the project, that your voice was taken from you.

And speaking of voices, instead of using a pseudonym to write comments, how about posting your real name, lest your comments not be taken seriously. My name is Adam Shake and I don't wear a mask.

This is a total embarrassment to the community of Estes Park. The 4 old farts on the city council need to be removed or resign "Immediately" before they set this community any further behind. The City needs new "younger" forward thinking members to keep up with up and coming competing mountain communities. These same idiots also derailed the possible move of the Library (which would have allowed the city to rezone as retail)shot down a winter fun area, a designated wedding facility, allow an upscale resort to replace the burned down theatre mall and failure to blight 2 areas of the city that would qualify for state tax dollars to rebuild or update outdated commercial structures. 99 out of 100 communities would have done everything possible to accommodate a project like this. A recall will likely becoming soon. There are many upset (younger) residents that ready to make changes. O and Jake your an idiot the trustees DID NOT do their job try to follow along

There is a difference between complete and following the schedule the Trustees set in the October meeting. Go back and listen to the first meeting where the submital deadline is set as Nov. 1st. Then go to the website and look at the 'received' date stamped on the drawings (Nov. 7th).

that "..There are many upset (younger) residents that ready to make changes." All they have to do is get involved, and when elections are held, pull their faces away from their smartphones and get out and vote! Hasn't happened so far, and I'm not holding my breath that the apathy will diminish. Face it - the many upset(younger)residents are waiting for someone to do something for them. Until they wake up and work for it, they're going to get the status quo....... Please! Wake up! Prove me young!

At least we know how to use a smartphone...LOL. They are a good time management tool. Better than carrying around a typewriter and a bulky address book like one council member does. Its part of living in the 21st century, you should try it sometime. AS far as getting involved: Largely this is a time management issue for some of us business owners. Hard to find time to make it to all the meetings to do the job correctly. The other issue is we are greatly outnumbered by retirees making it difficult to get voted in. There is a lot of nepotism in this community and on this board. We are working on identifying people who have the time, knowledge, and common sense to be on this board. Then finding the correct course of action to overthrow these 4 members. Might take us a while but this latest failure has fueled this community into making a change. If you don't agree with progress, then move to Pinewood, Allenspark, or Ward.

If you want the progress you advocate, move your miserable ass to the city and leave EP alone. And as for calling me names, now we are even. And by the way, GFY!

Wow Jake what are you like 7..LOL. This is not about progress, it is about common sense and upgrading the community. Not talking about adding 2,000 homes and condos. I do live in the city part of the year by the way. As far as GFY..go back to grade school and think of something new...thanks for playing now run along!

OK----Let's be real. First of all sense is not common. Second, improvement is progress. Third, why does EP need upgrading? It survives just the way it is. We all have our reasons for our thoughts and actions. Too bad everybody can't be happy. Maybe since you don't live here full time, you should keep your opinions to yourself and let us full timers have our community. I'm going to run along now. You have a great day, ya' hear?

LOL..Why does Estes Park need upgrading? Seriously??? Most of the lodging and other important commercial buildings are over 50 yrs old and qualify for state funding for upgrades yet our city council won't even approve that. The town is great but it is aging quickly and tourism dollars are starting to shift to other towns with nicer upscale resort type amenities. Younger families demand this. If changes are not made, the town will suffer in the future. MANY business owners feel the same way, good town but we could do better with proper leadership. This is not just my opinion...I hope you do have a great
day also ;)

Upgrades yes, more density, no. I think we've both made our points. It's been good talking with you.
