Back in the 90s gangs were a huge issue here! The violence amongst them was crazy and I think that these teeny boppers nowadays are trying to live up to something they are not! Thats not to say they should even be trying---its a worthless useless lifestyle. Back then they had "heart", or "balls", and now unfortunatly these little newbees are commiting even DUMBER crimes than their "for-fathers" just to prove they are "down"!
Any how, being from Lowell and from the Acre we had our taste of a few different "sets". Which ones do you guys remember and they're crimes?
There was Joshua who was beaten to a pulp near Athurs rest.---awful beating, the boy died! And Jason Carmona-a gangmember-though he was a nice kid--shot in the back by another group of kids and left to die.....
The Asian girls( dont remember the names)--one or 2 were shot while at a house during a driveby...this one sticks out though I dont remember the details...anyone??

I remember them.

The Authurs one, the kid that died provoked his own beating by trying to jump two rival gangmember (race war between asian and spanish). So the two kids gathered up their friends and staked out the guy and gave him a beat down.

Carmona was a spanish on spanish thing, rival spanish gangs.

The two girls shot, which one? Girls get shot all the time trying to be tough getting in between altercations. Girls are nuts there days anyway.

YEP, true on both, just sucked for the families. We are the ones left to pick up the pieces!!
The 2 girls were shot and I know for sure that 2 Puerto Rican guys where sent away for that, maybe more. But at least one of the Puerto Rican guys had his own affiliations with "Asian Gangs" at one point he was a top "dog" with the Asians, then stuff disolved with that crew and a new predominantly Hispanic one came about. The Carmona thing was a crazy thing because I had "friends" on both sides of the fence so the whole situation sucked, but ehhh you reap what you sew and no matter how "good" a kid you are, if these are this is the company they chose to keep, I think they kinda set themselves up for it!

AHHH all those names are coming back to me now, reminds me of school days. I knew people from all the groups but it never interested me to "join" it sounded so stupid, lol.

I remember getting jumped in 1992 by a group of thugs calling themselves Tiny Rascals Colors. I never seen them before so I don't know what their problem was.

The difference between then and now is, then we fought more with our hands. Now you get your head blown off or stabbed! I'm sorry, but these kids that are in the gangs now, don't even care. They don't even think before they act. It saddens me that I can't even feel safe allowing my kids down the street.

Back In The Day:

I was in the same situation as you growing up. From elementary to junior high it was cool. When high school started, kids started joining gangs. I had friends on both sides. Back then my daily life went from kick the cans, hide and go seek, cops and robbers to running for your life from a group of gang members trying to hurt you for being a certain color/race.

What did I do, I said screw it and got a job at 16 and been working since. It isn't easy to pick sides when the people you grew up with are trying to kill each other.

As NiKi stated, gangs don't use hand to hand no more. It's guns, knives, rocks, and whatever these days. Usually over stupid things like fighting over girls, retaliation over beating someone/family up, or the worst of all, COLORS.

Gangs will never die, therefore we all should teach our children right from wrong and be sure to keep an eye on who they hang out with.

I say having true balls is going at it, toe to toe, head to head!!!

After a while I even had one group who I "knew" a few people in, decide I was down with the "enemy" which was totally false-I always stayed neutral, but it was just because of where I lived. They were following me home from work and crap every night for a while, then they gave up.

What do you expect was going to happen the more you see violence the more you become immune to it. The things gangs did in the 90s is what makes these gangs this way no a days.

Most of these gangs still exist. I've worked with the Lowell teen population since 2000 and I recognize most of those names. Did you mean TRG - Tiny Rascal Gang? Because as of 2002 or so, they were still around. AB is still active, too. UTEC does a lot of work around peace initiatives between rival gangs - they do some incredible work.

Very interesting comments people. LPD and citizen of Lowell did very well to keep gang off the street. I have seen many organization helped a lot of trouble kid. Don't just look down Asian too much. Because this recently there are stabbing and shooting that nothing to do with Asian. A lot of Asian people are working hard and very nice people too. They don't like violence as much as you all too. They disciplined their children more than you all here. However this country, the law are taking away parents right and teacher right of how to dicipline the children. The kids now a day are very smart and they often miss translate the "Freedom of Speech". If their parents put to much discipline toward them, they run away from home and often blame the parents for to hard on them.
UTEC have a wonderful program for thos gangster, but I also have seen those kids still in the gange after they left from that building. They still wearing and behaving like gangster.

Awwww. A lot of pent up hostility in this little puppy.
And the correct spelling is "too," not "to." Thanks for correcting that from now on.

I think probably one of biggest reason why gang crimes gone down is that hip hop isn't all about being gangsta like it use to. Rap use to be about kill kill kill, but now it's more about girls and bling. Unfortunately, weak minded kids are dumb enough to do whatever pop culture tells them.

The other is the internet and tecnology. So much things to do online, so much chatting, texting, and talking on phone, so less reasons to hang on the streets. Internet exposed a wider world to young kids beyond their streets, showing that gangsta life is stupid.
