The 'Tent Cities' in Lowell are squalid drug-towns where assault, rape and now even child abuse are common.

People have the idea that these places are somehow like campgrounds, but they are nothing of the sort. "Tents"? Filthy blankets propped up on sticks. Human feces everywhere, up to your ankles, with used needles floating on top. Drugs everywhere. The smell is incredible. It's a toxic waste site.

Why are these people here? So they can use drugs.

These aren't "hippies". they're not trying to live a "simple life" or "Get back to nature". These are hardcore drug addicts who refuse detox, treatment, and homelessness prevention services, because they want to use drugs.

Sure, they'd love to be in an apartment, or maybe public housing, but they can't have that and an armful of heroin too.

And now the "Tent City" is spiraling out of control.

Lowell's "Tent City" has now become the premier destination for all the wrecked, wretched, active addicts in New England, and a dumping ground for the police in all the towns in New England who want to get rid of their undesirables.

How about rapes, knifings, and a rumored dead teen girl dumped into the canals? How about a couple of dead newborns? Are you sickened yet? Or do you still think that these are just good people "down on their luck"?

I don't have the slightest sympathy for these people. Massachusetts is the national leader in programs for homelessness prevention. Lowell has several organizations like the Lowell Transitional Shelter, Pathfinders, The Lowell House, and Community Teamwork, as well as numerous active and engaged religious organizations, that will help addicts who want to get sober. But we've been stupid enough to give addicts a "Tent City" to shoot up in.

And now they're making Lowell itself into hell. Addicts panhandling all over downtown, at the door of every supermarket, and defacatng on the sidewalks right beside their empties or needles. Every park in Lowell is littered with used needles and broken beer bottles. Let's cancel soccer and little league so the addicts can shoot up and drink in the parks all they want.

Screw everybody else, let's take care of the addicts. Screw Little League. Screw your kids.

Giving addicts handouts and a tent city is ENABLING the addicts.

Addiction leads to jail, institutionalization or death. If you try to get an addict sober when they don't want it, you're wasting your time. If you feel bad for them, remember that there is always personal choice. If they choose to get sober, we can help them. If they don't close your door. Close your door on them on Christmas Eve with the snow howling down, because maybe, just maybe, they'll figure out that drugs and life don't mix.

They should have bulldozed the tent city years ago.

If you feel bad for them, run down to the Lowell Transitional Center at 7 PM, and grab one of the intoxicated crazies that gets refused entry, and let him camp out in your own backyard.
