'SOS Signs of Suicide' offers tools to help youths in trouble

For most people, a bridge is a way to get to the other side of the river. For some others, it's a platform to dive from and end their heartaches for good.

groton is a sick place a court case was one by a student Zeke Hawkins last year for the sexual abuse he received when he was a student. many of the boys were sexually abused and sodomized by senior prefects about 10 years ago and if they complained the school asked them to leave. hopefully the student that committed suicide at groton school last week didnt suffer too much while he was there. the best thing i ever did was move my son out. very sick place

here is the email all Middlesex students were sent this afternoon by our head of school, Kathy Giles:

We learned today that Groton School has suffered the loss of one of its students. This is the saddest possible news for any school, and I'm sure that many of us know Groton students, faculty, and staff members who have been deeply affected. I received a call from Groton's headmaster this morning, who explained that the school is designating Friday as the day to honor the student's memory with an on-campus memorial service, after which the Groton students will leave on their long weekend. He requested that we postpone all of our Friday games and do our best to reschedule them over the rest of the fall.

We will be posting a news brief on the website to alert everyone to the change in schedule, and we will send out a special email to parents, but please let your friends and family know about the change if they were planning to come for the afternoon. If your travel plans need to change, please contact Mr. B. Smith as soon as possible.

Thanks -- Mrs. Giles

Another concerned m9m (see above) obviously knows nothing of the Groton School nor does she have any idea what happened in the Hawkins case. To write such things is careless. Way to go.

"Reality check" has it right - I don't know where "another concerned m9m" gets her information, but it has absolutely no basis in fact. My kids were there at the time. Groton is a very caring school, and I'm so glad they went there.

Ok - so then what happened if you think there's no truth to this? Tell us.......or are you another stuck up, snobby Groton parent that is too scared to tell what really went on? I can't stand Groton!

Explain why the school trustees pleaded guilty to failing to report not one but several cases of sexual abuse and hazing. Open your eyes.

Groton is certainly not the right place for everyone, but it is far from being toxic and elitist. I harbor a deep love for the school and for the friends I made there. Anyone who assumes that we are snobbish or cold ought to see how deeply shaken our community is over the death of Hunter. I doubt we'll ever be the same. Also, some of the things I have read about this that were written about this are just terrible. A boy is dead, and a community is broken and mourning. People can be too cruel. Please respect both Hunter and the school that loves and misses him.

Yes, a community is broken and mourning and I feel for them all and espcially feel for the boys family. Poeple can point fingers in certain directions, but the truth is there are snobby people everywhere; there are bullies everywhere; there are heartless people everywhere. But in those same places, you will find caring, truthful, hardworking, kind people. We are truly a melting pot...

While the incidents concerning Zeke Hawkins took place after I had graduated, I can personally attest that I was never abused nor did I abuse anyone while at Groton. I would also like to mention that Zeke Hawkins only made his allegations after he was caught bullying a fellow student in a most horrendous way analogous to what occurred at Rutgers. Groton is a very small school, but there is a place in it for everyone. I was definitely a math nerd. No one in my year would have ever said I was really cool. But the friendships that I formed there have lasted decades.

i agree with you it is a sick place bill polk the headmaster ignored the rapes-
1. why did 20/20 do a whole segment on the sodomizing that went on at groton. unfortunately it was shown on the sunday of labor day weekend but it mentioned the senior prefects licking the nipples of the 8th and 9th grade boys and digitally penetrating their anus'. the seniors would play some scarey music after dark and go around the younger boys dorms and enter with a flashlight and abuse younger boys. all these parents that write what a wonderful small caring school this is should do some research and talk to their sons and find out the real truth unless their sons were the abusers.

the reason why zeke might have bullied was because he was raped and abused several times by one of the older studens who bill polk the headmaster has written a letter for to go onto yale funny thing is the guy turned out to be a loser in a band downtown nyc
why do you think groton had to send a letter to all forner parents apologizing for what had happened after they lost the court case duh

As one who followed the Hawkins case very closely in the courts, school and press, for contributors to suggest that Groton was a safe school is absurd. There was a long history of abuse at the school dating back 100 years. That the leadership chose to bury the case and the students -in particular Hawkins as the most vocal - that spoke is a greater sign of the lack of leadership and protection afforded the students at the time. Hopefully, under a new headmaster and more importantly, under the leadership of a new CoB students are safer.
