Perhaps a catwalk could be built going over University Av.? When I was a student at UMass-Boston, there was a catwalk going over Morrissey Blvd so that people could cross without fear of getting hit. It's unfortunately what happened while waiting for the bus, but a catwalk would certainly be safer than trying to cross the street, especially in heavy traffic.

Another problem area is Riverside St. Just as I was driving away from the accident scene yesterday, I saw another student almost get hit crossing Riverside street from the Engineering building to Olsen Hall. This should be an eye-opener for the University community.

Excellent idea... Lowell High has two going across the canal. I don't see why they don't do that... but then again... she wasn't crossing the street... the poor thing was waiting for the bus. It's unfortunate... my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family!

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about an accident waiting to happen every time I drive on that street. Something needs to be done right away. I agree with the catwalk idea, its the best way for pedestrians to avoid any traffic and get to the other side safely. Especially with the way people drive here in Lowell, its not safe. Does anyone know who the right people are to contact and get these ideas off the ground and actually get something going? There have been several accidents/deaths in that area. Obviously this isn't something to be taken lightly.

I go to UML and live off of Univ Ave. Whoever said it wasn't a concern that the area is dangerous is either lying or completely stupid. Almost everyday someone nearly gets hit on that road. A catwalk is already in place, albeit underground, and it does nothing to prevent what happened yesterday.
Speed bumps is by far the best idea. It would cost nothing to do and could be done by lunch time.
2 on the portion of Univ Ave where this happended and 1 within 20 or so feet of the intersection with Dunkins on both sides of Riverside and also Univ Ave going towards Dracut. Bernie Lynch ain't got $h!t on me!!! I should be city manager!!!
It took me longer to type the solution than it would to implement it...

You are clueless. The driver didn;t try to take off. He crashed into lightposts, the girl, and two walls. Where in the articel did it say he tried to flee?

If your reading comprehension skills are subpar you should refrain from making posts about stories that require reading and understanding....

That road was, is and always will be dangerous until something is done to fix it albeit speedbumps or another light in front of the library. To the UML student from Bedford, I wouldn't be too critical of other's comprehension skills until you learn how to spell correctly. I know UML has great English courses.

Unfortuntely the driver suffered a seizure behind the wheel when she accidently got hit. No one was the intented target, it could have happpened to anyone sitting or standing at that bus stop...Your UML family and friends are praying for you Rachel. We love you

Hey dumbass.... the driver had a seizure and I am sure feels absolutly horrible! He really tried 'taking off' by hopping over a 3 foot wall and crashing into another one! Lesson for the college student... make sure you read the whole story before you judge!

I used to live near UMASS Lowell off of Riverside st. I can't tell you how many times there is an accident. People do not pay attention over there at all or the kids cross right in front of cars expecting you to stop. Yesterday, was simply a tragedy and this girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I drove by right after it happen and one of the police cars almost took me out. I feel awful for that girl and those students who watched her lifeless on the ground :o( My prayers are with her and her family. I hope she gets well soon.

well i've walked through that area a couple of times and watched. Its very hard for a student to cross without having fear of getting hit. There are drivers trying to pass other drivers and the streets are to small. But most importantly there is no authority watching over these sinceless drivers as they pass through day in and day out.

That section of the road should just be closed off to non-university personnel. I worry every time I cross that street because too many drivers don't pay enough attention.

How do you all know the driver had a seizure?

It surely makes sense, but curious to know how you got this info...

That judgemental person was a "Dracut Resident" not a college student.

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Aquarius

There simply aren't enough hours in the day today for you to do everything that's on your list, so concentrate on the priorities. Don't feel guilty about what's been left out and start to worry about it. This isn't an easy day because you're feeling pressured and anxious, so don't expect too much from yourself. There's less energy than usual, which doesn't help.
