The only chance of true media coverage and reporting for this story will have to come from Boston. The Sun leaders are in bed with this story. Too close too home. Just check the list of family names beginning with "M" on the Sheriff's payroll.

Funny, they can't wait to publish the lists of overtime earners each year for the city. How about the list of connected employees?

Misuse of public dollars is a story and a major one.

Oh because he is the only one who has ever done that? NOT! So the man is gone. We know what he has done so now we are going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to find out what he did, the man can't pay for the crime if any that he has done so why are we gonna continue the "hunt"?
Leave his family at peace if they can

Finding out what he has done could help right some wrongs that he has done.

I wonder how much money he buried in his back yard for retirement, we will never know, but sadly this type of corruption is state wide, and no one can seem to stop it

It would have been nice to see a little more culinary diversity than just Italian eateries...

The Sheriff knew he was going to get his ass handed to him by Gov. Deval Patrick.

I also remember the Sheriff driving around Lowell like some hot shot. Jumping out of his suv making a bogus gun arest.

Well, it is true you have to spend money to make money and he did bring in more than went out. He would have been considered a success on "The Apprentice." And, it sounds like he knew a lot of very good Italian Resturants that I'd love to try. So he lived life Tony Soprano style and had a good time doing it except he actually went out with a bang.

Sorry, I don't know the man...but all these comments made to say that.

baloney. lowell sun, keep up the good work here. this story is VERY relevant, and may even lead to meaningful campaign finance reform, as well as pension reform. dipaola didn't off himself because of this embarrassingly dopey dinner bill scam (the old take the cash from everyone, stuff in pocket, and pay bill with campaign $)- which, btw, is the oldest dumb trick in the book (my god, look how disgustingly porky he got, literally as well as figuretively!). that's just the tip of the iceberg. he must have been stashing even more money away somewhere, got ratted out (the rat's name's been written everywhere in this forum), and knew the DA's office were closing in. the whole resignation charade a few weeks ago after supposedly coming to his conscience about double dipping into his pensions was also big bull. he knew he had no way out so he pulled off his very last scam by waiting for the pension board to approve his resignation, taking the lower pension that can be transferred to his wife after his death, and then killed himself - hoping that the investigation about him would end with his death. this is where the state must step in and prove this crook wrong. don't let the dead guy continue to rip off the tax payers from the grave. this has nothing to do with sympathy for his wife and children. they need to freeze his bank account and assets immediately before more money disappears.
