please please do not send your kid unless you want him beaten someone almost daily and those parents who can not come for visits because they are far away, more then likely your child is being tortured and they can not say anything if they do they will be beat by wimps,I know that they are scared while away from their, for fear of getting back what they did, remember what goes around comes around and if you have children, someone do the same that you have done to someone else child, it does not have be the same setting as a Glenn Mills, when things are not going well for your children look in the mirror you cause it reciprocity is a bitch. you get back what you give.

i agree...take it from a REAL knucklehead. I was a student athlete there for three years...baseball t be exact. Besides getting an education and graduating with a DIPLOMA and scholarship , I learned respect , how to control my anger , how to accept negative feedback in a positive way , and many mnore things that i still find myself doing that lead back to my experience at glen mills. i am 32 years old now and have lived a very hard life in and out of prison but one thing that i do know for sure i recomm3end it to all

ALARMED is an organized group of present and former staff of GMS. We write letters to Juvenile Justices in Philadelphia and other states, school systems with alternative ed. programs and aftercare programs and DHS departments. Some of us are presently employed in these departments. We ask there be an investigation alleged mental intimidaby of students and staff. We feel there is misuse of written school policies and charters. We tell our stories of present and past employment and the intolerable, unwritten but well known leadership policies of fear of demotion, retaliation, intimidation and degradation. We encourage everyone we get in touch with to reconsider sending students to GMS until the administration has made a full turnover and new leaders are in place that value their employees they supervise.
My son was recently sent to GM because his PO thought that he needed "structure". On my first visit I saw that my son's eye was red with blood due to burst blood vessels. When I asked what happened he told me that he was manually assisted. He really didn't want to get into specifics but when I pressed I found out that he was told to get on his knees to clean some walls as a punishment for not carrying his folder. The staff member told him to "get on your knees like you are sucking Cock". Because of the language that was used my son refused and started cleaning the walls by bending down instead of kneeling. He was manually assisted by the staff member. I later found out through my son and others that this staff member makes many lewd comments and jokes to the students and all of them are of a sexual nature. My concerns are 1. In my opinion you cannot stop prevent violence by using violence and 2. If you make someone afraid of you by using sexual inuendos you are making them vulnerable to sexual abuse. My son was not sent to GM for anything violent and he is being violently assaulted physically and mentally by both staff and other students. Apparently it is a GM policy to have other students known as Bulls yell, hit and even spit on the non-bull students. When I spoke with the rep prior to my son's admission, I expected and even welcomed discipline, even if it was a little physical but this is not discipline. If I treated my child this way I would be arrested.

I was a student at Glen Mills in the early 90's and have been a part of it's program until 2007. I have not wanted to post anything because I didn't want to hurt antone's feelings but here you go.
Before being a student, I was a sentenced drug trafficer (federal charges) that got away with a lot of more serious crimes that were not solved. I was sentenced to Glen Mills from out of state and realized quickly that I was not running their program with my negative ways. The early indicator was this, I wasn't asked anything...I was told. It wasn't odd to me because that's how my mom dealt with me in the first place. Sadly to say, some kids have never had to deal with an adult being strict because they are either scared of the child or they are trying to be so cool with them that they are taken as their friend. In the 4 months being incarcerated in federal jail and juvenile placement before I got to Glen Mills, I was stabbed along with six other inmates, I saw over 50 fights (not one on one), there were 6 flat out riots, there was daily forced sexual acts committed, routine drug use, half-hearted redundant education, and continuous plots to escape at any means. While at Glen Mills, throughout 17 years, I have not seen nearly 10 percent of the same. Let me explain: I was restrained while I was there when I lost my mind and tried to run my own program. Even when there are restraints after a student is out of control, the student has to acknowledge what their mistakes were. Usually, that student doesn't have the same issue, not because of fear, but because they have already deciphered the necessary steps to deal with the same situation properly because of accountability from the last time that they were in that situation. In life, some people are gonna have better experiences than others, but I am one man that feel that Glen Mills Schools does wonders for students, not inmates, that want to better themselves and not use escuses about everybody else. Staff members are people and sometimes mistakes and bad judgements are made, just like we all make throughout our lives. Not one person alive is perfect. This place really saved my life within the first 6 months because I developed a great sense of self-control; it gave me a great insight in life the second 6 months as I accepted former college and pro athletes as mentors and started recognizing options in life that I didn't know existed; and made me the man I am today by allowing me to stay two extra months so that I could fulfill my requirements for high school and to ensure my post-secondary plan to attend college was complete, furthermore to allow me to work in the Continuing Academics Support Program (CASP) which allowed me to earn money and mature during summer and winter breaks from college. When I finished college, I didn't even consider looking anywhere else for employment other than Glen Mills. I felt that if I became half as good as the men that I encountered there, I would be a great man! Larry Lawrence, Aaron Powell, Mike Smitherman, Tom Mann, and Cosimo Sam Ferrainola(RIP) were and still are my support system. To the people that used to and still do work there that have hidden agendas: There are over a billion companies in America, find another one that your skills will be valued, and go there. Remember, it's about the kids... we're grown. When you leave, leave and let them be...cause now it seems like you have issues. To finish this off, I have been all around the country working with troubled students and have developed a decision making process that "If it's in the best interest of the children, it can't be wrong." If there are really people out there with concerns, you need to have a real name (put it out there) and get in touch with people that actually send kids to Glen Mills and share your experience, maybe it will help. But what about the 90 percent of successful students that take accountability and acknowledge that their own actions caused undesirable reactions.-Mr. X

We will send you information, but please remember, we are in this until the present administration is removed entirely and with the dignity that was not given to SF, employment quality and equality is brought into place, the threats, retaliation practices and demotion policies are abandoned and upward mobility for line staff is restored. If this does not happen, we are in it until the gates are closed. We start our second round of mailings to outside sources(see comments from above) in September. We are the union.

We are in the process of creating an anonymous e-mail address. We will then post it on this site. The majority of members of this group need to remain anonymous and we are respecting this request. You can probably see the difficulty in comunication that this creates but we feel successful in getting this far, particularly with the survey. We have also notified outside sources and will continue to encourage and the board is well aware of staff issues. We are asking for a respectful way to reward (and retire) long term staff and insight into retention and promotion of line staff. Thank you for your interest and suggestions.

I have again been harrassed by GMS and GI for false alligations of tresspassing on the GMS property.. a letter was sent out to all staff and local law enforment agaencies to have me arrested if I am seen on the GMS property... I will be in court on July 26th in front of Judge Cappelli for his review on this matter . all are welcomed to attend

youth in the future..That was dismissed by Judge Bradley and the co-worker never paid me back for the money I spent on my defence..which was ruled in my favor by Judge Cappelli back in september..i can no longer tolorate the vendictivness of this administration any longer and ask that they be sympathetic to me and my family as we mourn the death of BOTH of our parents.

$1,000 bonus, and $750 raise? 3 years since my last raise and you think that is gonna make me smile? This place is ridiculous but like I tell the kids, rape this place for all itís worth and Iíll do the same. I have a high education then have the people that supervise this place but they get free houses, first dibs on RS, free gas. This place is on itís way down so quick I donít know how much longer this place is gonna be here. Kids running off campus like a track meet and we get bitched at like weíre supposed to embracing this company whole-heartedly when they prove time and time again they donít care piss about us. Iím glad Iím working at another full time job, I hope those guys across the street invested properly!

And if you havenít been a student at GMS since Ipok took over shut up. The school offers great opportunities to those that offer them something in return, itís not the school of the passed, all the old staff will tell you that. See you in team meeting where you can hit me over the head with the b.s. some more.

ALARMED can be reached at [email protected] We are not asking for your name or any identifiers, should you want to remain anonymous. We would like to hear from employees on how to change this organization and move forward in a positive way. We will forward information to the Board or appropriate authorities.
