Davisoregon1 - Did your uncle happen to work for the telephone company at one time?
Sorry to what's his name that moved his business out of Dowagiac, but no cigar as I don't work for the city and not in a click - whatever that means. And my AEP bill has tripled from last year, so call me whatever you want, as I am only stating my truth. And not all businesses that have opened within the year have closed so not sure where that information is coming from. Guess it depends on the business & what they are trying to sell. If you don't have what the buyer wants then the business won't succeed.
If you are looking to move to Dowagiac to volunteer for youth programs, good luck.
Our mayor Donald Lyons don't believe in any activities for youth, that is why Dowagiac has such a problem with youth crime.
The only things you can volunteer in Dowagiac for is our festivials, and you will only be allowed to do that if you make enough money. "Regular people are not allowed to help with anything.
If you make enough money and kiss our mayors butt you will be welcomed in Dowagiac. If not, move on to a community that has community pride.
Has any of your other communities posted your name account information and your payment history from your utilities on the city's webpage?
Dowagiac does, so if you want your privacy don't move here. If you want to view residents personal payment history go to www.cityofdowagiac.com .
Here is a few highlights of our fine town, so you know what you are getting into.
Our former city manger was arrested for attempting to have oral sex with a 14 year old.
Our funeral director had remains in his hime
Local doctor arrested for child pron.
Mayor accused of rigging a 3 million dollar car auction
Highest electric rate in the state.
City clerk leaves ballots in voting machine so election was unfair.
Mayor only hire out of the country workers at his business and don't even support residents that live in his city.
New city manager is paid more than the city manager of Lansing Michigan.
These are just a few. You wanted facts here they are.
So you see what you have heard or think about Dowagiac may not be true.
One word of advice, if you move here go as fast as you can and kiss our mayors butt and you may be welcomed here, if not you will become one of "us"
Bill may not have worded it well but he is right. The way the town is being run right now it does suck, but many of us are hoping for a fair election from our city clerk Jim Snow and have different council elected in November
Penelope, are you serious? Businesses close in Dowagiac.
Goodwill couldn't even make it here in a town with a larger than average poverty level.
We have a second hand store here for childrens clothes and the only reason it is still open is because the city helps pay their bills just like Woodfire.
A business can't make it in Dowagiac because residents could care less about their own downtown because the businesses don't care about the residents. They only care about the summer crowd.
You are a city plant because no other business in Dowagiac would spout the propaganda you do.
If Dowagiac is doing so well why has most of the businesses dropped the membership at the chamber?
There are so few businesses in the chamber they may have to close.
Awaiting your answer and this time use your real name. Who Knew who you really are?
You can be part of a problem or part of a solution. Sounds like you enjoy being part of the problem by stating things that are in the past. I also believe that if one is to be taken seriously, one should know the basics of English Grammar, something that is short supply when some people are voicing an opinion. SMC offers several English courses and how fortunate we, the citizens of Dowagiac are to have close access to the college. In regards to the people you have listed, other than the mayor, the rest were just everday citizens who chose to break the law. And the last time I checked, there is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty. We live in a land of freedom of choice. If you don't like where you live, move. I'm sure there is a community somewhere who would welcome a disgruntled individual with more complaints than solutions.
I have spent some time in the Dowagiac area and have made some interesting observations. Most of the following are related to the real estate market as I was looking for investment property.
1. There are few "quality" homes in Dowagiac. There are lots of $10K-$50K shells but they are
good for poverty rentals only. New construction is
2. The listing prices are way out of line when compared to the areas south and west of Dowagiac. a house listed at $135K requires so much investment to bring it up to comfort and cleanliness that the final cost would be $180K-$200K. That money would buy more up front in
surrounding comunities without the added effort.
3. It appears every desirable building site in the county has a trailer or modular shack that results in a grossly over inflated price being asked.
4. The abundance of poverty rental properties in the city and surrounding country side results in
excessive prices being asked for clean, maintained
properties (supply and demand at work).
5. Well maintained and clean lake properties are
rare for less than $300K-$400K. The better properties are out of state owned.
The first look at Dowagiac from the outside gives
the viewer a favorable first impression. A deeper dive into the community's structure and economics indicates a community in serious decline. There are too many people with too little in Dowagiac which sets the stage for crime, a situation to avoid when looking for responsible investment.
Sorry Dowagiac, I could never recommend your city as a viable place for retirement. The original poster for "Why Dowagiac" can find much better
conditions 30 miles to the south.
Dowagiac rocked back in the late 50"s
Take it from someone who moved into Dowagiac, and was not born or raised here. Don't move here. Once you move here, you get stuck and it is hard to get out. The utilities are really high. I moved here into a two bedroom apartment and had a higher electric bill through Dowagiac Utilities then I have now through AEP in a three story two bedroom house just on the outskirts of town. not to mention, there is not a lot for anyone here.
