In 1971 I entered the 7th grade and began my first year at Illini. The school was like a prison. It was hot and had very few windows and there was a constant noise. The noise came from the open class rooms, big open areas with no walls and of course no windows either. Lunch time was a nightmare as you spent almost the entire lunch period standing in line trying to get served,so I never ate lunch and would try to wolf down a candy bar from one of the vending machines between classes. I can honestly say I never learned a thing at Illini even though I spent 10 hours a day in the system. I caught the school bus in southern Jersey County at 7am and didn't arrive back home until 4:45pm,well I got off the bus at 4:45 but I still had to walk half a mile home from the bus stop so that made it 5.00pm. This is a big mistake sending these 6th graders to Jerseyville. If our corrupt school board hadn't of wasted our tax money building two new empty schools this wouldn't have to happen. I remember back in the early 60's we were told that Illini would be built in the center of the district. The school board keeps on lying and ripping off the taxpayers.

Hopefully the new school board members will start making money saving ideas. I recently toured IMS and feel confident about children attending there... All grade levels are segregated... We have great teachers in our district.

Sorry jerseyville sucks that you had such a rotten time at Illini. Maybe if you put in a little effort, it would have made a difference.

The new school board is just as corrupt as the old school board. The district is run by the teachers union

Illini was to be built in the middle of the district in the Otterville area so everyone would have to travel the same distance to school, the school board lied again. The teachers at Illini back in the early 70's were the dregs of the system, several came to school drunk and there were rumors that some were pedophiles. I knew two girls who claimed to have been touched by one of the male teachers. During the winter of 74/75 a group of boys tried to burn it down, they burned down half of it. I was in High School then but we were all happy to hear it burned and the kids who did it were heroes to everyone who had ever been through the hell of Illini.....The 6th graders will be picked on by the older kids and exposed to sex and drugs at Illini. Send your kids to private school if you love them.

Home school your kids. The only thing your kids will learn at Illini is how to take drugs

Well not all kids I am sure... Good values taught to your children go a long way in making the right choices. No child is perfect and sometimes kids who have been taught the right choices get on the wrong track. Taking an active role in your child's life and being proactive also helps. Also if people have problems, concerns, etc., go to the school board. People can complain and complain but until you complain ENOUGH to the RIGHT people, nothing gets done.

I started Illini in 1971 also. I lived in town and didnt have trouble getting back and forth to the school. I thot it was alot of fun. Sorry some of you didnt like it. My grandparents lived 2/3 doors down from the kids who tried to burn it down. I remember those boys. They were nothing but trouble. I remember Jerseyville was such a small hick town. I liked it ok but glad Im gone from there. I've been living in Springfield now for over 30 years. lots better for me up here.

I think he should join one of the gangs now so he will have an edge on the other gang bangers at Illini. The Latin Kings seem to be the the gang of choice right now but the Crips do have some good points also
