The Safety of the Students, Employees, and property is not a priority here at USF. They swept a MURDER under the rug only because it was a former student who was an adult not some happy go lucky 18 year old.
The USF Administration has their heads in the clouds.
Reading the USF Police Chiefs memos posted on the first reports site, I'd really like to know why Genshaft finds it necessary to spend money on some "Security consultant" when what the University needs was told to her months before by her own Police Chief.
Anyone with minimal management skills can see through her baloney. Standing up and walking out when she is asked a simple question??? This is totally unacceptable.

Safety is a hard commodity to quantify until the unspeakable happens. But, then it is too late and as it is in this business, that is when the finger pointing and blame game begins. At that point upper administrators will want to know what happened, how it happened and why it happened. Chief Longo should be commended for bringing the concerns he had about campus safety through the proper channels via emails and meetings to his superiors. He is a very qualified man who (in my years of law enforcement) knows what he is talking about. He was doing his job to ensure the safety of the USF community. There were no scare tactics. He stated facts and valid concerns that have been known by the officers at USFPD. He is not the one responsible for the news articles. But, let's look at the alternative. He becomes chief of police, recognized the issues but didn’t bring them to the attention of the USF administrator for fear of rocking the boat and remains status quo. And then, some time in his career that “unthinkable” happens. What then? Where would the community point the fingers?

USFPD has a very dedicated police force. We are dedicated to protecting and serving the USF community and all who are within our jurisdictions. Though we are small in numbers our abilities to deal with the issues that come up day to day in the university setting are managed the best we can. The other day, for instance, was a busy day for the officers working. We had 4 officers on duty and 1 dispatcher. None of the officers working had any time to actively patrol the campus. Virtually every minute was spent taking reports ranging from thefts to computer hacking and medical emergencies and then the officers had to write those reports. Ask yourself. Do you, the USF community, find those numbers patrolling your campus sufficient?

Hey Judy, You must be very happy that USF won this weekend. We are sure on the way to being one of the best and biggest schools in the state. So at what point will we let the Police dept. keep pace. It is now 39 officers for 50,000 should we wait till 100,000 before we address the issue.

i was so excited to se the bulls beat auburn at home with my family this weekend. my dad returned me to the res hall to find out that my 350.00 bike was stolen. the UP cop we called was so nice, but he said that they were so busy on calls that they had little time to just patrol, and that there weren't many officers avialable anyway. i saw the article in the Oracle on all of the stolen bikes. my friend told me about this site and what has been going on with the UP. I guess the student's stuff doesn't matter much to this school if they won't let the cops help us. It makes me wonder who these people are walking around the res halls just taking our belongings.

i don't have another $350 for another bike, and i don't have a car.

And was anyone aware with all the honesty and candor that they supply on these posts (and they should be read with some integrity by the administration of USF) that Judy Genshaft will NEVER see any of the comments because she purposely never receives any e-mail? She prefers to have other staff get it, thereby protecting her from reality. Try a snail-mail campaign.

I am sorry to hear about your bike theft. As an officer with the department we try very hard to keep that stuff from happening but as you stated we are stretched to thin to be able to focus on anything proactive. 3-4 officers working a shift with upwards to 50,000 people on campus is not logistically possible to focus on any one problem.

Judy, stop trying to make yourself sound good by making posts...they already have tried for some grants. But this SHOULD NOT be their bread and butter like your insisting!!! Granted, for extra toys I agree with you, use grant money. DO NOT use the grant money for paying salaries!!

Those of you who are angry at Pres. Genshaft are uninformed and over-reacting. She has built USF into a top tier university, which makes all of our degrees worth more. If you want to be angry at someone, blame Florida lawmakers for underfunding higher ed for years. Now we're all paying the price for thier ineptitude. All departments at USF are suffering, but USFPD is employing scare tactics and overwrought emotional insults instead doing what other departments are doing - finding alternative methods of funding (like grants.) So go ahead and scoff at the grant money Genshaft got for you - clearly USFPD could use some training in the fine art of negotiation. And by the way, neither Sami Al Arian nor the middle eastern students ever committed one violent act ON CAMPUS, so the Al Qaeda commenter should really try to get a grip.

Thousands of dollars are unaccounted for on this campus. Someone should hold Genshaft's administration accountable for all of the money coming onto this campus. An audit should be done. The trustees should pay the police department enough to keep the department competitive with surrounding police agencies as far as their base pay rate and yearly raises go. This is imperitive so that the USF Police Dept. is sufficiently staffed to protect all of us employees (not to mention students!) The thought of needing a consultant to figure this out is moronic!

Bikes, Computers, GPS systems from cars the crime stats continue to grow. Theres hardly enough cops out there to take the reports, let alone provide preventive patrol. But I guess thats ok, right Judy ????

To accurately determine crime statistics for the University, you would also have to review the crime records of Tampa Police Department. The University drops all/most of the violent/felonious crimes that occur at the University upon TPD. This is not just supposition; this is something I have directly observed. Please understand that none of these prior statements are meant to be derogatory to either of the aforementioned Police Departments. These are standard University Administration policies, and have been for the last several years.

I have to disagree with the last post about USFPD turning over violent crimes to TPD. The only incidents that the USFPD pass on to TPD/FHP are traffic related deaths and traffic crashes involving USFPD police vehicles. Violent crimes, to include homicides, are handled by the USFPD. We do not turn things over to other agencies. We do work in relationship with other agencies when a case dictates it. I do not know where the last post got its information but I have been with the USFPD for almost 2 decades and know for a fact the post is incorrect.
