Animal clicking noise?

So... at night only so not a bird. It's January so probably not a frog or insect. It is close to the ground, so not a bat.

What the heck is making the clicking/chirping noise? Its make the noise for a few seconds and gets slightly higher in pitch towards the end of 10-15 clicks. I can hear at least 5 different voices, coming from different places and not all are the same pitch but are all this chirping/clicking sound.

What is it? Didn't hear it over the summer although the bugs are loud and may have drowned it out. It only happens at night and it seems to be too cold to be a frog. Seems like it must be a mammal but what kind? I have never heard this up north and it is driving me crazy not knowing what it is.

Do any of you know what I am talking about and better yet can you identify this sound? OMG My phone does not pick it up so without a better recording device I can only post a description and hope you know what I mean.

Could it possibly be a chipmunk? My cats will sometimes corner a chipmunk in the garage or basement, and the chipmunk will make a clicking-like noise while fighting with the cat and his adrenalin is way up. Of course, I always rescue the poor thing when I can. It really is a distressing sound, though.

Thanks for your ideas...

It's not a distress call, it happens every night all night and there are several voices so it's some type of communication but doesn't sound distressing at all.

It's not the right time of year for insects that I know of... it is warm though so maybe some kind of frog?

I am going to try and record it.

I wonder if this might be "cave crickets?" I am pretty sure they live year round in Georgia. They are really creepy crickets that almost look like really ugly brown fat spiders.

Yes, I'm in Nor Cal. At night in the woods I can hear a group of large animals lumbering along. At first I thought it was bears then the clicking/chirping started. Like they were talking. More dinamic than squierl talk and not any form of bug. Definatly a large mammal.

I am hearing the same thing tonight but I am pretty sure it's a bird because it's coming from a tree. I hear it a lot but would like to know for sure and what kind of bird it is. In response to previous comments especially in the woods, Sasquatches do use clicking sounds to communicate, along with chirping, clapping and many other sounds.

Its either a cricket, a cave cricket (called sprickets because they resemble a spider at a distance), or cicada or "katy-dids", I think they are called Mayflys. Beyond that, ive heard that clicking sound in gutteral instances in those japanese horror movies where the people walk around contortioned into weird positions as they get closer and closer and closer ...>>BOO<<!!!

Female crickets make a clicking sound when they are ready to mate. The males respond with a similar click. They continue to click until they do their thing. A faint cigarette smell is often noticed after copulation occurs.

I just heard this sound for the first time tonight, and I have lived in this house for five years. It's definitely NOT cicadas! Do white tail deer really make clicking noises? I 've never heard them do so before...? My dog was sniffing the air, and watching whatever was making these noises as they crossed our property heading toward the neighborhood pond...but then my other dog, who had just come out , heard them and started. barking; so I grabbed him and put him back inside...but never heard another sound.I saw something as it crossed a small lit area, but couldn't tell what it was...but didn't seem too much bigger than a rabbit. Deer, would have thundered off...heard that before, but not tonight. The only sound was that very loud clicking/popping sound. Sure would like to know what it was! Very curious!!(They're building a neighborhood in what used to be 80 acres of wooded area, just to our west, so all the poor animals that called that home are trying to figure out what to do now!)
