build a new half a million dollar jail and complex and The Douglasville City Council has been presented with a second compensation proposal and while the numbers are different, if enacted it would still mean more than a 60 percent pay increase for city council members and rank as one of the highest council salaries among Georgia cities of similar size

I read this story yesterday in the news section and thought that if this keeps on that Douglasville will have to raise its taxes or go into default on its loans. I saw on the public Douglasville tv station that the city council raised the motel tax to 8%. They are trying to scam more tax money from any source that they can.

Let's try to keep the city and county separate....since they are.

The county built the jail, so if you have issues with that look to the county commissioners.

The city council members are looking at methods to change the "pay by the meeting" system they have been using that resulted in the former mayor getting into "some" trouble......and yes, from the looks of the reports in the paper they could possibly be voting themselves a hefty raise in the near future.

Also, the hotel/motel tax in the city has been at 8% for sometime. The monies from that is what built the new conference center downtown.

Recently the county commissioners decided to raise the rate to 8% in the county to be on the same level. They announced the money would be used to hire a curator for the downtown museum and apparently the rest will go towards the Hydrangea Festival per paper.

For anyone not in the "know"....the hotel/motel tax monies can only be used for certain things per the Georgia legislature.

the city council is a SERVANTS POSITION. It should also be paid SERVANTS wages. These people ran for office to be able to serve the people of douglasville, so they should actually work for FREE. They wanted the position, so why should they be paid? Maybe $25 per meeting. These people like the authority and use this as a way of life instead of a servant .Why should they make more money than a server at a restaurant?

Actually you do have a valid point. Many years ago many smaller cities and towns only paid a small amount to their city officials as it was a position of honor and volunteerism to help ones community. As years passed the local politicians got wise and started giving themselves raises caring nothing about the communities for which they served. Look at their salaries now.

You are very correct as anyone can see that rides down Fairburn Rd. That is where it is located. Just look for a huge red brick building.
