I was told by Douglas County that my home has increased in value over $40,000 in the last year, when the facts are that our homes have lost 15%-20% of their value over the last year...what can we do? "Appeal" it?
I was told by more than one real estate agent that I can ask for "x" dollars...but the fact remains that I would likely get "y"...(on a good day: the same amount I paid for my home 10 years ago).
I have seen homes in my neighborhood sell for 175k that started out listed at 250k...
Our standard of living suffers, and goes down while we are so concerned with raising everyone elses's...

You can appeal with the tax office. What usually happens is lots of letters and phone calls on the homeowners part, where they try to get you to give up. If you don't, eventually they will knock a small amount off, to make you shut up and go away. Then the next year, it goes up again, higher than the original amount the previous year. My parents have been on this merry-go-round for years now.
BUT, with the way things are now, I really believe that all homeowners should try to fight this together. Strength in numbers and all that. It is an election year, so it might help out, for now. But I guarantee you, when the election is over, they will go right back up....

Also, I believe it is clayton county (?) who has a lawsuit about this going on right now. I will be curious to see the outcome. If homeowners win, it might be something douglas county residents can use.

You can appeal it to a board. Do your homework, comps in your neighborhood etc. The tax appraisers office will have no respect for you when you make your case to the board. Just keep your cool.

Document the recent sales of nearby properties that are similar to yours and then appeal the new assessment. Just remember, the window that you can file for an appeal is short.

I like that web site. Don't you just love it when government wants to have a special election, when turn out will be low, to raise taxes. I say it's time for a revolt. Citizens of Doodleville unit!

The best way to fight the tax increase is to hire an appraiser .They are state licensed and the tax commission will respect their take on the current housing downfall into affect and show that your home has decreased this year .Do not appeal with out a current appraisal .There are several good companies in town . Accupraise real estate service ,Atlanta west these are two great appraisers I've worked with them in the past .There are several listed in the phone book also .They can really help if the county is saying your value went up .The county has borrowed money against next years taxes they have to make up for .Do not let them do this to you .They should lay off some employees ,if they are having a tight time .

There was supposed to be 4000 homes reappraised at a higher value this year. If all those homeowners file an appeal it would throw the appraiser's office in a tizzy and stop the process.

Your point being ,people should just pay the taxes when they lost money on their homes this year. You must work for the tax commissioner Them having a problem doing their job is no excuse to just lay down and take it .Be for real if they can raise that many why can't they defend their actions also,it is their job.
