I can live with that. Looks like we have some smart people at the High School. Save that travel time and money and put it in the middle school and develop a real program. Go Trojans

No 9th grade team is a good idea to you? A way to build a athletic program? Someone better tell Coach Pruitt and call Lowndes, Camden, Colquitt and every other powerhouse program in the state while your at it to tell them they should cancel their 9th grade team if they want to remain competitive.

I heard the reasoning was the numbers. The baseball team just doesn't have enough kids going out to have three teams at the high school level. This doesn't affect the middle school, they will still have their same teams and I am sure when the numbers are back up at the high school level they will go back to three teams to get the kids playing time and experience. I have to say that I agree with only two teams right now because of the lack of players coming up this year. There is no need to have a ninth grade team just to have a team, it has to benefit the program and those funds can be better utilized right now on other things within the school system

I bet they still have the same number of coaches even though they are not having the 9th grade team. How is that "saving money" to be better utilized in the school system? I bet they added to the number of coaches just like football.

Fewer baseball balls at $50/dozen. Would probably need somewhere around 10-12 dozen for the season. So that's $500 right there. These are just game balls at that. They would also need practice balls which can be bought in a bucket of 30 balls at $100 per bucket. Would probably need 2 buckets, so that's another $200 in savings.
Uniforms: Hat with two jerseys would probably run around $150 per kid. 15 kids would be $2,250.
Catching equipment: Around $175 for a set.
So without factoring in travel, umpires and other miscellaneous supplies, they are saving at least $3,000. Now, I understand that this isn't a lot of money, but $3,000 is better than $0.

They only play 10-12 games and you expect them to use 120-144 games balls? Half their games would be away games and they would use the other teams game balls. I bet the varsity jerseys don't cost any more than $50 each so how could 2 9th grade jerseys cost $150? You pointed out expenses only and did not consider revenues from the gate, concession and boosters. I know they took a gate up at 9th grade football so I'm positive they would at baseball. How can only the other teams and sports field a team if it is such a monetary drain? How has CHS done it for so many years?

What about the 9th grade coaches? Were they let go to save more money or kept on staff and paid as usual?

New Guy you are negative if you don't tow the line with the powers that be and the power players in the booster clubs. The reason that you won't have a ninth grade team this year is that they didn't deem the upcoming ninth graders talented enough to field a team so they want to blend em in with the JV so they can sit and watch all year. I am a ninth graders parent and my son plays against kids his age from other town during travel ball tounaments and every one of the schools in our region and even the smaller schools in surrounding counties are fielding ninth grade teams. By not fielding a team we are taking the chance that these kids don't develop and fall out of the program. I know the big whigs that run the dugout club aren't worried about that since all of their kids are in the tenth grand and above but it sure seems like the coach would see it as a concern if he is trying to build a program for the long haul and not just for this year.

Or maybe the coach has determined that if they ain't got it by the time they hit 9th grade, then it ain't gonna happen. You can try all you want, but you still can't make chicken salad out of chicken excrement.

They still play travel ball in high school? Which one is better: travel in high school or playing for the high school team? Do you do both?
OLDGUY

#35 Jan 29, 2013
Yes they still play both, they can play tournament ball right on into their senior years. It isn't so much travel ball at the high school level as it is more showcase baseball which my son hasn't gotten to yet. He still has a year or two left before we try some of the showcase events that juniors and seniors can attend.

I heard there were close to 100 boys trying out for 35 or so spots at the middle school. I can't believe we don't have enough interest. It seems like we should be able to have an A, B, C and D team at every grade level!

Thanks for the info Oldguy.

I'll ask another question. What is the best way to get your kid on a college ball team?(Assuming you are a "nobody" with no pull/money/connections.)

Well considering that I am a nobody with no pull/money/or connections. The way that my son has taken with some guidance from me is to try to find your child the best competition and coaching that you can when playing tournament baseball. Also college camp are a good way to get in front of college coaches but you will want to wait on that until your child is old enough to not be just going to go. We personally haven't attended any camps of yet but my son hopefully will continue to improve and when he is a sophmore maybe we can get to one and definitely when he is a junior and during his senior year.

Oh and one more thing Billy Martin, you are talking about ninth grade players. You never know what kind of growth spurt kids that age will have and which ones will progress quickly enough to become players later in their high school years. They may not be that great now but a summer of growing might add a few inches, a few pounds and a few miles per hour to their fastball. I think that keeping them in the program is a good thing even if they aren't ready for varsity baseball yet.

Scuttlbutt around the practic field is that the Varsity and JV rosters have been set for a few weeks now. Makes you wonder who is helping out the new coach that has never seen any of these kids play in a baseball game. Especially the young kids coming up from the middle school program. If my son doesn't make it I would hope it is based on talent and not last name. Either way I won't lose any sleep but it does suck to see these parents hanging around the field like vultures when I go to pick up my son these past few days.
