It has come to my attention that Coffee County BOE has intentions of closing NES if the SPLOST passes. They will build another school somewhere besides Nicholls, maybe between Westgreen and Nicholls or around the State Park. VOTE NO on SPLOST... KEEP Nicholls Elementary School OPEN. Closing the school would KILL Nicholls. We have already lost the bank. Why would anyone go to local Family Dollar or Dollar General, Nicholls Pharmacy, etc... since they would already be traveling closer to DOUGLAS. Why not do all your shopping there and just close all the doors to the business' in Nicholls. VOTE NO on SPLOST.

If there's not enough money to keep a bank open how's the school that's there now gonna stay?

Southeastern Bank in Nicholls, Douglas and Hazlehurst will close on April 6th. Customers were notified 2 months ago. It's not a Nicholls thing it's a bank thing. Nicholls is one of the best schools in the county. I hope to God this is just a rumor.
Wasteful

It's a total waste of our tax payer money to have a school in Nicholls to begin with. From NES, it's 14 miles to Westgreen Elm, 16.5 miles to Eastside Elm, 18 miles to Westside Elm & 21 miles to Satilla Elm. All of those are well within an acceptable driving distance.

If keeping the school in Nicholls is what is going to keep businesses open, wouldn't the bank still be open? Having a school in Nicholls does nothing to drive the business community. But it does waste money. Consolidate the elementary schools, cut costs and quite wasting our hard earned tax dollars. I'll support you in voting NO for SPLOST, but I want Nicholls closed to go with it.

It isn't about the distance between the schools, but the size of the population in that radius of the school. CC makes babies, plain and simple. If distance was the case, all schools would be in Douglas proper. Kids that are in the outlying school areas get on the bus around 5:45-6:15 and don't get off until 7:45 or later. That is a very long time on the bus, which is why a K-12 in Broxton and Nicholls was such a great idea, but someone wanted a 5A football team.

Call the bus barn. Kids are off buses around 5pm.

I can tell you don't have a child at our school so you don't have a vested interest in our school! Its easy to sit back and say it doesn't matter but I grew up in Nicholls and Yes the school is the heart of our little town!! And its true if I'm already in Douglas id buy in Douglas its cheaper so it would hurt our town in more than one way! Nut I don't believe this is happening! We are suppose to get a new school!

Consolidating schools is the worst possible thing to do. Small schools are always better. Consolidating the middle schools was a horrible, horrible idea. Please don't start doing this crap with the elementaries.

Are you kidding me? Acceptable distance to drive??? Yeah sure thing if you stay home with your kids and can make that trip twice a day. How about consolidating a few of the schools in Douglas. I mean really? That makes more sense to me. I doubt NES will be closing.

The percentage of students in nicholls does not equal enough for state to pay admin salar y so lical funds pay for it.

If that is the case something like 3 of our elementary schools would be fully funded and the rest not. That is because people refuse to send their kid to the school in their district. When their kid gets in trouble they run to have him/her moved to another school out of district hoping the record will not follow them.

well they can run but they cannot hide. Their records follow them even if they move out of the county.

You know that and I know that but these parents are only prolonging the inevitability of their kids being at risk. If people sent their kids to the school of the area they lived in, all of our schools would be fully funded and none would need expanding while others closing. The problem is this county's double standards for certain groups of people.

This is NOT a rumor. The principal told the staff this week. The closing of the school will be the DEATH of NICHOLLS. Vote NO on SPLOST. Look at the Middle School DISASTER. They have too many administrators and they are in it for DOLLARS in their pockets.

.

Coffee receives funding for every student enrolled regardless of the campus or school district. The state funding formula (QBE) has never had what you describe as "fully funded". The state provides a bare minimum. It's up to local school systems to make up the difference in either reduced spending or increased revenue (taxes, grants, etc). It works like that statewide. Sure, you can use it, the formula, as a measure of efficiency but it would be wrong to say the schools would receive additional funds if the smaller schools were full because kids in city schools were made to go fill them up.
