Why doesn't WOOD TV look up his background or get the police video. They do it for lottery winners.
Why? Because this story is an old news story. WOOD only wants "Breaking News" and "Hot off the Wires". Follow-ups to a story are boring to them unless there is some new bizarre twist to the story. WOOD is only about sensational news, not community news.

I babysat for Robby & his brother Ricky, when they were little, also worked with his mom & then step dad. He was an adorable little guy and my prayers go out to his wife, mom, brother & all the rest of the family. God bless.

This guy auditioned for my band, just a couple weeks before he died. I'm sick of seeing the negative comments about how he deserved it. Nobody does. Rob will be missed, by friends, family, and the people he left a HUGE impression on after only the two hours we knew him. R.I.P Rob!!! Keep rockin'

Mike, first off I am very sorry to hear about your uncle. I will agree with you that nobody ever deserves to die. BUT...you need to learn a few things about tasers before you go spreading this story around. First, there is NO Deputy that will even attempt to taze somebody in a moving vehicle. There is extensive training that goes along with carrying and deploying a taser that ALL deputies in the country have to go through before carrying one. Second, if there was a Deputy stupid enough to try and deploy a tazer from a moving vehicle, the tazer wires that shoot out from the gun to the suspect are equivalent in size and weight to fishing line. If they were traveling down the highway the wind would have made it impossible for the taser barbs to maintain a straight path to impact the body. Thirdly, IF a Deputy was stupid enough to try it and IF the were going at a very slow speed and by some miracle he was able to get a successful shot, all Law Enforcement tasers have a automatic shut off time of 5 seconds, meaning it would not have...impossible to have continued tasing him until he crashed. Again, it is very unfortunate what happened to your uncle, but this story your spreading is not only wrong, but impossible. Maybe your mission should be to keep the memory of your uncle alive and tell others of the dangers of running from the police.

Wow, sounds like your aunt would have a hell of a suit against the cops. I can't imagine what kind of sick mind would justify tasering a biker who is obvioulsy riding with a passenger. Even if the driver has tried to elude the cops how can they justify endangering the passengers life, just to catch someone suspected of a traffic violation.

What was the road block for, him or just to stop folks in general? Sobriety checklanes are illegal in Michigan. I am not sure that gives you the right to run one but it for sure is no reason to endanger the life of a passenger.

How is your aunt doing?

Go file a freedom of information request and get the police report. Your investigation left out the part about him not having a license for more than 10 years and driving a stolen bike with a bad plate.

Even if true only someone unfit for police duty would taze a biker with a passenger on the back.

I am not sure I can feel sorry for your uncles life. I am the person who owned the bike your uncle was on when he decided to run from the police. The person that mentioned he was on a stolen bike, TRUE! MY BIKE! That was stolen from me 3 years prior to this accident.

I hope your Aunt has some money, because I plan on getting restitution from your family for the cost of my now wrecked bike.

I have ordered a copy of the police report so we should know shortly what the h--- went on here. I am concerned about the allegations concerning the use of a taser on a moving motorcyclist with a passenger on the back. Of course none of the local new media has done any follow up on this accident or the one in October where the couple on a bike died east of South Haven while returning home to Ludington. I sent for that report also so we can see if anything was done about that accident or she got a slap on the wrist.

I have also ordered a copy of the police report, while I wait for the detective that handled the investigation to call me back. I should be hearing from him later on today, so I'm told. I've also gotten as much of a background as I could on Robert West.By what I can tell he wasn't a career criminal (again in Kent County), but I'm sure the detective will give me more information.

This bike is irreplaceable. The only year they were sold in the US, so the bike was fairly rare. It's the predecessor to the R1, I'm pissed that I will be getting it back in 8 million pieces.

Well I 0rdered a copy of Robert West's background check through mi.gov ICHAT system and I was wrong in the response just above this one.
He WAS IN FACT a career criminal. Based on the fact that I can't release the information due to this statement at the bottom of the page -"DISSEMINATION OF CRIMINAL HISTORY INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO MICHIGAN & FEDERAL RULES & REGULATIONS. REFER TO LIEN ADMINISTRATIVE RULES & TITLE 28, USC. USE OF THIS RECORD IS LIMITED TO THE PURPOSE OF INQUIRY. PURPOSE CODE USED NOT FORWARDED TO NCIC III" -I won't. I can tell you this though, the guy has been committing crimes basically since he became an adult.

I got the report they did taser him as his relative posted here. I think he rode a mile after being tasered before he crashed. The report did not solve the mystery of how he got the bike and we may never know since his wife claimed not to know, he had it when they got together.

When they tasered him they only suspected him of drunk driving and even that was shaky. Tasering a drunk biker with a passenger on the back just over a traffic stop is nuts, what's next gunfire?

I'm pretty sure that if he had stopped as the officer directed, the officer wouldn't have had to taser a moving motorcyclist. And, if he made it a MILE after getting tazed, the accident was probably from running at excessive speed, not the tazing.

He didn't stop completely at the 4-way stop; not realizing that officers were sitting in a parking lot right there. The bike DID stop for the officer, but as the officer was walking up to the bike, he heard the biker tell his passenger he was going to "run", to give his wife a chance to get off, but she didn't. That is when they tried to taser him, but he took off. It's a couple miles to the highway exit where the bike sideswiped a car stopped at a stop sign on the highway bridge. That is only a two-lane bridge on a VERY hilly road, with no room for mistakes.
I'm not going to make excuses for someone running from the law, no matter what; it's just pure luck that he didn't kill some innocent bystander, which was VERY possible on that road. It's not about saving the life of the biker or his passenger,(she made her choice to stay on the bike); it's about trying to PREVENT the senseless death of an innocent person from a drunk or reckless driver. Is running worth the risk of taking one's own life, or the life of another?
Would you not complain if they didn't try to stop this guy and he killed someone up the road?
Problem with that theory is that he did not know he was drunk when he fired the taser. The guy had stopped properly at 20th and 18th w/o causing an accident. I am not defending him either he was drunk, the bike was stolen and he did not have a license but that was not discovered until after the crash. Endangering the passengers life to stop a biker fleeing from a traffic stop is ridiculous.

Officers make decisions in split-seconds every moment of the day. I guess I would ask myself why is this guy running? Would he be stupid enough to endanger the life of his passenger and others just because he didn't have a license? Your right, the officer didn't know him or WHY he was running, but most people would assume he was running for a HUGE reason; especially after he already stopped once.
I myself, have taken the motorcycle training safety class, and I've seen pictures of bikes that have crashed through car windows and doors, so it's not just the "running" biker at risk. He put his passenger (wife) at risk the moment he decided to drink and drive.
I have family members who were good friends of this man, and they even said he made a stupid move. So lets keep the "blame" where it really lies in this case, and pray that others learn from it.
Listen there is no doubt Mr. West made a dumb move here and is to blame for his fate. I think it is a closer question on his wife. Deputy had the taser out for a while before he used it. I am most surprised that they have a policy that allows the use of a taser on a suspect who has a vehicle under their control. Think their policy lets them tase motorists. The risk of tasering them would seem to be close to the risks of shooting them when they are attempting to control a vehicle. Can they use a taser on a snowmobile driver or ATV rider?
