I'm so sorry for your loss and that you have to be reminded of this everyday. God Bless you and your family.

"May the Lord keep watch between me and thee as we are absent from one another"

That Bible verse always brings me comfort when I think a certain person that I lost before her time.

The law should be held responsible for the deaths of the deceased officers.I personaly know Steven Bixby, and feel, that anyone out there would have defended there property BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

Do you honestly think that what they did was acceptable. A few feet of land does not give you the right to take 2 peoples lives, espically without trying to resolve the matter. There is absolutely no excuse for that!

Are you in your right mind? I live in Abbeville and also knew both officers and Steven Bixby!!! I am 99% sure the Bixbys would have been paid for their land like everyone else!!I pass by that nightmare they called home everyday, you can't hardly even tell that any footage of land was taken and the road work is finished threw there. The Bixbys are sick and twisted people to do what they did in our good town! People can say what they like about Abbeville but if you happen to read all the bad things that have happened in this town, most of the people that do these horrible things, are NOT from ABBEVILLE!!

Amen! I too live in Abbeville and knew both Officers. I was there when "Danny Boy's" family was informed of his fate! I can't understand why things happen the way they do, but I do understand that it was wrong in every way! Donny was shot in the back! Is that to be justified too?!!! You are so right! Most of the people FROM Abbeville are good and would never do such a thing!

I see no justification for those deaths and anyone who does is sick too! What if it was your Father, brother, or son?! Would it be alright then? Abbeville people are primarily good folks! Like "Lil Red" said, most of the horrid are not from here!

I moved to Abbeville 3 years ago, almost exactly 1 year after the Bixby family shot and killed two officers. Over the past 3 years I had heard people talk about the "Bixby Shoot-out" but I never really knew what they were talking about. After hearing that mentioned in passing several times, I began to research the Bixby situation and was amazed/appalled at the things I have learned.

I live in Abbeville, work in the square, and feel safe here. The murders in '03 were no indication of what Abbeville or even Abbevillians are like.

Looking at the situation from a different stand point- one of someone living 25 miles away at the time of the shootings who moved into the community shortly after- I see both sides... I see (as we all do in retrospect)fault/errors on both parts, but the major fault lays on the Bixby family.

Life for land? That is not a fair trade, and it doesn't make sense. I know that recently they were found mentally fit enough stand trial, but to me the whole situation and their whole mindset is crazy!!! It is backwoods and barbaric.

Anyone who lets that situation weigh on their views and opinions of Abbeville itself hasn't taken the time to look at Abbeville, SC. It is a wonderful town, with great people, and beautifully preserved history. Everytime I am out and about in my car(even though I work in the square everyday!) I make a special point of driving through the square and appreciating the history and charm of it all. There is something amazing about Abbeville, like it was picked from a painting or set on this earth just to help us remember where we came from. I truly believe that people who judge Abbeville as a whole just by that one isolated incident are naive. Come and see for yourself, if you've never been here before, and you will see.

sorry. abbeville's ok if your family llived there for like a hundred years, if your parents went to AHS and shit like that, I know, I live there too, but to me, the place is hell on earth and I honestly can't wait to get out of here. I was born here and still was treated like shit from day 1 by abbevillians. I hope this clears things up

Joshua, no I don't know the name.

I really think that those people were backwoods too. I could not imagine anyone agreeing with the Bixby's or their tactics. I've been researching the case online and have come to see how crazy they really were.

To clear up my earlier post- I was just saying that I really don't think that Abbeville should be judged by the Bixby's crazy actions. I really like Abbeville a lot and I'm sorry that you have had such a bad experience here... I guess going to school here and really getting to know the people is what formed your opinion of it...

Good luck with everything!

Life for land? That is not a fair trade, and it doesn't make sense*.

Neither* did the two nephews of Moses when the Ark started to tip and they tried to prevent its falling. They were TOLD not to touch it or die! The same goes here. They were TOLD by sign to KEEP OUT, but decided to spew forth more words of wisdom. Wisdom in their eyes, but in the wrong place. If they had a beef with the Bixby's, the rules of engagement were PRE-scribed in their posting: do it in court! They violated the rights of private property, and so like the squid that sucked onto Capt. Nemo's Nautilus, it/they died! There are two elements here: the parasite and the host. A man's home is his castle, as with a mote full of alligators. It's sometimes referred to as the curtilage of a building. If some intruder invades that space, like no-man's land, he can expect some lead in return, especially after being warned to stay away! How dumb can these public servants get to ignore the sign and trespass onto private land withOUT a search or arrest warrant!?

I too was born in Abbeville and like Mindhacker above was treated like dirt every single day I lived in this not untypical southern small town. There are good people there, to be sure. and i think I know all of themm personally. It is expectable that the South will attract hardbitten right-wing extremists like the Bixbys, because the message of hatred and xenophobia is dinned into one's ears from birth by lousy morons who think that merely being born white puts them at the apex of human development, and who therefore practice every form of small-minded and black-hearted hate they can dream up. I was scorned as an egghead and a sissy, a nonconformist and a drug user, all of which is pretty much true, and almost was raped by five male high school students decades ago. My life there scarred me and made me into a very distrustful person, a very fearful one who always feels the swordd hanging over his head. If there were a god, and if he were just, Abbeville would have much to fear from him. To others who suffer there, my advice is to get out of there ASAP. And DON'T ever go back, which I did mistakenly, only to find it worse than before. If you get invited to your high school reunion, burn the damned letter.

These are all good excuses, but the examples that you are basing your comments on are outdated and from a completely different time. We live(or supposedly live) in a civilized society, it is 2007, and all of you comments date back hundreds and thousands of years ago!

I passed by the Bixby property yesterday on 72... I would hardly call it a castle. The Bixby's weren't fighting for acres and acres of land, they were fighting for meer feet of land! Land that was presumably not even their land to begin with...

The Bixby's were all about the law. They used laws to their advantage, they twisted the words of our constitution, and they were ABSOLUTELY wrong in handling the situation with violence! I don't care what sign in posted where... IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO MURDER PEOPLE! You say that their sign basically meant "DO IT IN COURT"... Seems like they would have taken heed to that advice themselves... "Do it in court", handle it lawfully, peacefully, and rationally!

Those men did not come to the Bixby house that day to take their land, they didn't come to violate the posted signs, they came to keep peace! They came to try to help the Bixby's... but I guess some people are beyond help. Some people are just plain crazy.

Do you think that if you had been born in, oh let's say Montana, that you would not have been picked on in school? Everyone who had a bad experience here seems to think that Abbeville is the only place in the world where people will run across morons and bullies. I firmly believe that PEOPLE ARE THE SAME WHEREVER YOU ARE! Your highschool experience was not unique to Abbeville and it was not an isolated case caused by being raised in the South. At every highschool in every town in America there is someone who will be picked on, ridiculed, and scarred for life. It is sad, it is useless, but it is true.

I am sorry that you were among the people who had bad experiences growing up. It sucks that Abbeville left such an awful impression on you, and I'm sorry that you were treated so poorly. But people here aren't really all that different from people anywhere else...

I am not a backwoods moron.I have read statements by the on duty watch officer, telling his officers not to go to the Bixby home, less than an hour before the shoot out. When officers of the law do not follow the orders of thier commanders, things like this happen.So,Mr.Mindhacker,what would you do?Probably take what little bit of money offered and go about your day.If the chance ever comes for the state to take part of your land, for any reason,if you accept thier offer, use the money wisely, get a labotomy.HAVE NICE DAY!!!

I do not think what happened is acceptable,on either side. But,I do feel that the new breed of gung ho police officers out there need to be reprogramed.True 2 people died there that day,but only one was shot by a Bixby, the other got shot by one of his own.
