A 28-year-old man, described by family as a rap producer who occasionally promoted his music at Chicago nightclubs, was killed and one of his friends was wounded when gunfire broke out inside a popular late-night club on the city's Near West Side early this morning.

Chicagoan Brian King was fatally wounded, and one of his friends also was shot, when the gunman began firing about 2:30 a.m. inside Transit Nightclub, 1431 W. Lake St., authorities said.

A few hundred people were in the bar when the shooting occurred, a police source said. The dance club is open until 4 a.m. Fridays.

King, of the 9700 block of South University Avenue, was taken from the scene to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 4 a.m., according to a Cook County medical examiner's office spokesman.

The other victim was treated at Stroger and reported in good condition.

King's mother, Connie King-Griffin, said that her son was a music producer for Chicago rap artists and would often go to clubs to promote his music. He was planning to move to Atlanta on Monday to help advance his career, she said.

King has a 7-year-old son, and graduated from Parkland College in Champaign, his mother said. Friday, the family gathered at King's grandmother's house awaiting word from police about what had happened.

"We're doing the best we can at this point, trying to support each other," King-Griffin said.

Thursday night, King had gone to the club with a close friend. While at the club, another man started an argument with King which developed into a fight, King-Griffin said.

A police source said a fight occurred sometime before the shooting and they are investigating that incident as a possible motive. Police said they are looking at the club's video and also street cameras outside in the hopes of getting a description.

Transit, which opened in 2000, is a 10,000-square-foot nightclub that can legally hold more than 900 people, according to city officials.

Representatives for the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Licensing and Department of Buildings said that the club has received only minor violations in the nine years it has been open, all of which were quickly rectified.

Club management did not respond to messages Friday, but police said they are cooperating with the investigation.

The fatal shooting was already the second of 2009 to occur in the nightclub district that has sprung up among the factories and meat markets of the West Town neighborhood.
