I'm trying to rack my brain on if there was a "sandy" area between Greenwood Rd and Lincoln Ave along what I think was California Ave? There were woods there before those condo's went in back in the 70's. This area would have been east of Dolton Park too. I remember that area before it was developed with housing. The old PRR tracks ran along there too (later it was Conrail).
Dusty, I have a video clip of those condos/apartments going up--mid 1970's. Those railroad tracks were one of the most cursed--haha. But one still can't get around Dolton with the railroads.
Anyone have a few spare viaducts in their garage?

Hey Carl-Too bad you didn't have some video clips of some new viaducts being built in the mid-70's! The worst tracks were the IHB tracks on Indiana Ave, they were always rough to drive over if you were able to cross them without a train blocking the crossing! I'd be interested in seeing the video clips of those condos being built.

Has anyone mentioned the little grocery store that was on Lincoln Avenue near Langley (I think) right by the curves? It was run by a little old lady who lived upstairs. I remember riding my bike over just to buy the penny candy.

I remember an ice cream parlor on Lincoln & Chicago with Martino's cobbler next door. Horney's dime store and the Dolton Library above "city hall". I played little league for the Medics sponsored by Thompson Clinic and babe ruth for Brown's Funeral Home. I spent most of the pennies I made collecting bottles and delivering the Advertiser at the Dairy Queen on 140th & Indiana. Downtown Dolton had Herzog's clothing store and a live bait shop.

RIVERDALE GRAIN TOWER TO BE DEMOLISHED!!

DAMIANI'S PIZZA CLOSES...AGAIN!!

http://www.villageofriverdale.org/

Grain tower is going down, according to the website above on March 16, 2012 at 1 PM. They list a ceremony taking place then, but the actual demo time isn't noted, but I am checking.

Heard Papa Damiani's closed--they were in St John, IN at the Northwoods Restaurant. It was just bought out and the new owner decided to do his own pizza, as I was told. Not sure of Lou's new plans.

When did you play for the Medics. I played for them when Mr Heitmann was the coach. Larry Vis was our catcher and Buzz Heitman was one of our pitchers.

Dolton/Riverdale Little League ruled the south suburbs. Arts roller rink, poppin fresh, dolton park carnival and fireworks, queens fest, Ben Franklin on 144th st, the grainery, value village fire!, sneaking into piskateers and Isaac Walton to cast a line. Waiting for hours to cross the railroad tracks. Remember the old guy who walked through neighborhoods with the knife sharpening cart?! What an awesome place to grow up.

I rememember the itinerant knife sharpener; didn't think anyone else did! I also remember the "Old Potato Plant" on Indiana near 147th. There was also an old, industrial type building on Greenwood, just east of Chicago Road. Does nyone remember what it was? I attended the ceremony regarding the grain elevator last Saturday, but I think it will not be coming down anytime real soon. I remember hearing that a horse had been killed by an automoble near Berger School in the early 60's. Old-time comedian Bert Wheeler, of Wheeler and Woolsey, was grand marshal of the 4th of July parade, circa 1963.

I grew up on Lincoln Ave. I too remember the knife sharpener and ....seeing Santa at the Dolton Cinema. I remember when in the summer some policeman rode their Harleys instead of cars! I remember the big billboard on Lincoln just past the S curve advertising the homes to be built in
Marydale Manor starting at $19,900! My mom was librarian when the library was on the top floor of city hall and I spent my afternoons there with her after morning kindergarten. She also baked pies for the Woodshed restaurant (I believe that was the name of it)before it burned down.

I remember the knife sharpening guy pushing his cart around and the bells on it would ring as he pushed it along! He was getting a good workout pushing that cart all over too!
On the Grainery Demoltion Ceremony-Was there any plans on what they were going to do with land left behind?

Hi Susan - what a surprise! Just checked this website today (3-22-13!) and saw your comment. How are you? Where are you? I was just talking to someone the other day about my friend Sue McGarity and when she lived with my family. Do you remember that? It was like the sister I never had! Hope all is well with you and your family. Judy

I remember the trampoline park. They were ground level and built into the Almar Plaza parking lot. I believe the place closed down in the mid 60's.
