Mt. Airy Deadly Shooting - WGHP

Two victims are dead and two other are hospitalized after a shooting in Mount Airy.

Can someone please tell me what in the world is wrong with people here in Surry County???? I lived for over 50 years right outside of Washington DC and never had this many shooting. Law enforcement needs to put their efforts into cleaning up this county. I move to my parents hometown and think it's safe....well it's not. My thoughts and prayers are with the vitcims and their families.

I can tell you that due to major mental health cuts in NC, no opportunity for social or recreational outlets, zero transportation, this county is in for even more of these tragic events! It's a sad truth but when the mental health population is not being treated, has lost all supports and I do mean ALL!This population has no where left except for the streets, this is what happens. Increase law enforcement? Why not put back the mental health field that provides the supports and outlets necessary to avoid these crimes and decrease these tragedies? Wake up citizens, speak up for your tax dollars! My heart breaks for these victims' families. Let us all offer our own natural supports up to these in such an unimagineable life altering situation. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

And yes MOMMA T I can tell you what is wrong with the people here in Surry, I'm sorry, SORRY county:

1) Everyone here thinks Andy Griffith is going to save the planet.

2) There are NO JOBS.

3) The education base is what? 10th grade, maybe?

4) Old money. No one wants to spread it around.

5) Religious right. God forbid anyone step out of line or hold a different opinion.

6) Property taxes are ridiculous compared to the average annual salaries.

7) Corruption on all levels of government...especially the police department

Turn loose begonie. Bottom line is narrow minded ones think law enforcemnt is the answer. You're right on with the insigt there blah blah! Mommy T, are you a statician or licensed psychiatrist? We are responsible for our own actions. How about those with tramatic brain injuries, schizophrenics, etc? Not nearly a mind to be responsible for choices or actions. This obviously isn't mental health related though someone wasn't being responsible. It is sad and our community needs more than what it has to offer at this time. By the way, those substance abuse dollars were cut along with our education. Something needs to be done here, clearly. You and I don't have the answers but I guarantee you, increasing law enforcement isn't one of them! Patrolling borders? Maybe!!!! Speeding ciatations? Not so much. There is enough intrusion from law enforcement, unless we all have a thick wallet!

While I am not suprised at all that this has happened. The economy and drugs keep dragging this area down and we all know that Andy cant solve it.

I would love to see the Mount AIry Police Department become more of a community oriented police department, and work more for and with the people of the town. Instead of focusing 95% on speeding or drugs, lets increase the time they spend working in the community to help catch theives breaking in, to boot out the thugs in certain areas, and help make our town safer. It takes the citizens and the police to help crack down on it.

This area of Mt airy, as well as North Main st has become nothing but a drug haven, and its only suprising that this doesnt happen more often.

People get out, check on your neighbors and your family. Call the police if you see anything. Heck, worry them to death with anything you see thats unusual, and keep them in your neighborhood.

I was just wondering why everyone has to put the hispanics down. Just because this situation happened doesn't mean that all of the hispanics are bad. People are so racist these days. Hispanics are not the only ones that kill people but they are always the ones that people talk about and put down. They have as much right to live her in America as we do to live in Mexico. Other racists do this stuff too. I just don't understand people. God put all of us on this world for a reason but no one sees that. We are all equal in God's eyes. Many people are suffering from todays useless killing. Everyone has a right to comment however they feel, it helps to release the anger and discussed that everyone is feeling.
However I am not ready to trash Surry County or Mt. Airy, I am ready to stand by them. It is easier to give up than to stand up. To those that don't care for this town, that is your right. However, for those that do care about this town we should do any and everything that we can do to help.

The lack of jobs is a reason to kill people, trust me he was not upset over taxes, like he has ever paid any. Corruption? When is the last time you stood up and yelled, that't enough, maybe it is time to. Religious right, they are not the citizens that kill, come on now. Just maybe pushing God to the back of the bus is not such a good thing.Our entire country is in trouble, don't think left or right, that is what they want to pit ua all against each other, ever heard divide and conquer. Think right vs wrong and get up and so someting about it. All of the Surry County people have my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you all and help your town heal.

I've been on the phone and exchanging emails with people in Mt. Airy. They are working as hard as they can to resolve what has happened. They are truly upset about the victims and what all has taken place. They are listening to everyone's concerns. They are going to do all that they can in searching out the reasons behind this useless crime. They are working hard on resolving this and making sure that this town never needs to face this kind of crime again. I have faith that they are doing their best and are just as concerned as everyone else. They are not God but they are trying to do their best. Mt. Airy is a good *home* town, with or with out Andy, this town is good and needs to be supported. God's Peace to those that lost loved ones. God's Peace to the older folks in Mt. Airy that have been shocked by this. People in Mt. Airy are good people, country people, down to earth people. This has been a shock to them and my heart goes out to them. It's hard to tell older folks to just suck it up, this is the *new world*, they like things just fine the way they were. My heart goes out to them in this changing world. God Be with us all!
