Thank you for the information. Does the council not vote on the appointment? Is the City setting itself up for having to pay other employees, who may find themselves in a similar situation or keep their position open without pay due to this action?

If he does not resign as Deputy Chief suspending him with or without pay is at the will of the mayor, no vote required. If there are ongoing investigations in O.F.details cannot be be discussed openly. If he resigns as Deputy Chief and reverts to Lt., and there are problems involving O.F. it would fall under the Police & Fire Commission which has the ability to fire or suspend him. The Mayor or City Council do not have the ability to fire a Civil Service employee.

Then suspend him without pay for job abandonment... easy. Its just the powers that be don't want to take action.
I understand he is presently suspended without pay as Deputy Chief. If he resigns he automaticly reverts to Lt, which would require action by the police & fire commission. He has no charges pending in O.F. which means he could come back as Lt. At that time if investigation finds something wrong charges would be filed with the commission and he could be fired. You don't seem to understand that there is a process that has to be followed, you can't just fire a civil service, union employee at your will. Remember this all hinges on finding a violation in O.F, and the court not allowing him to return to work.

All appointments are made by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. I assume this one was made by the Mayor when he took office, and the appointment would be in effect for the Mayors term unless the Mayor decided otherwise. In order for the Mayor to fire him as Deputy Chief he would have to have to have just cause, Makes no difference right now as he is not being paid. The last thing I want to see is for the City to make a mistake that would lead to a lawsuit, I am sure they are being advised by their attorney's

We have not heard anything new on the case, did the State's Attorney throw out all the charges? The Defense of this case is all built on "lack of knowledge". If that is the real reason that this went on for over 2 years, does it mean that one spouse is going to bear all the responsibility?

Why is our city government so quiet about the process here and why would an Alderman be making any comments on a pending case? The Mayor's office has been very quiet about this situation, why is that happening?

The city would still need to move forward on this situation at this point correct? Or are there more issues coming to light in Oak Forest?

Nothing new and this will take a long time to shake out, but it sure does send some shivers up the spines of many in Oak Forest. I would believe when the last Fire Chief was allowed to retire and the PW Director was indicted those also sent some interesting shock waves through City Hall, now here we go again, doesn't this town ever learn their lesson on these type of situations?

The main message I think it sends is the regular citizen/taxpayer never really can feel comfortable about their city government!

What the city needs is legitimate leadership that puts the city first before self-serving endeavors. That is the core problem. A lack of morals, ethics, fairness, honesty. As I have been stating, this group needs to go. Obviously, the mayor is part of the problem considering his undying loyalty to his criminal thief friend. That is very disappointing and I hope voters are taking note. Same goes with some of the alderman.

The mayor ran unopposed last election. Many of the aldermen have run unopposed. Voters could be taking note but will someone step up to run? Will voters show up to vote?

It will be interesting to see if there any additional folks in the election process for 2015. Al we can do is wait and see, but I would think many of the issues before this current council will be discussed very thoroughly in the next election cycle. Then again, maybe folks just don't see any issues in the City of Oak Forest.

When you see what the leaders of the town are doing or not, you just wonder why folks are not more concerned?

You are correct. It is very disappointing that the mayor ran unopposed because it was time for his ouster. Same with some aldermen. That creates a situation and mindset where they don't feel like they will be held accountable or booted for a poor job.

What is driving the lack of candidates from running in the town??

Everyone should whine about thievery and corruption. Everyone should whine about self serving people driving the town down the toilet. It is the right thing to do. I can't help the whining, I guess I just hate crooks.

Running for office could offer many unethical perks and that is why a lot of people do run for office. An example would be to enhance the activity of your small business.
Or to benefit from building contracts in the town. Or the ability to do favors for something in return. The leaders with this mindset contribute to the downward spiral.
As far as ethical perks, you are correct. There are not a lot of them. The greatest perk to running is the satisfaction of bettering your community. To know that you sacrificed your time to create a better place to live. The positions should be a personal sacrifice of time and effort without personal gain. This would sound crazy to a lot of people but that is the way it is supposed to be. And I agree, there is probably a lot of grief involved because you can never make everyone happy.
So, it does take a special kind of person to run for office for the right reasons.

You are right. I think one thing that stops people from running, at least in this town are the lengths some are willing to go to be elected or stay elected. You wouldn't think you'd find it in a city like ours, but I have heard stories about some pretty nasty politics. These go from people being confronted about who they chose to support to people receiving anonymous phone calls with threats of rumors being started that could ruin reputations. One instance, someone was making calls to a spouse accusing their significant other of infidelity. There sure must be some big pay off if people are willing to do this.
