A 30-year-old Oak Forest woman was found dead Sunday in Markham, the Cook County medical examiner’s officer said Monday.

Melissa McDaniel, of the 5000 block of 152nd Street, was found dead in the 16500 block of Hillcrest Drive, the office said.

The cause of death has not been determined pending test results, the office said.

McDaniel was pronounced dead at South Suburban Medical Center in Hazel Crest, the office said.

Markham police had no further information.

How sad. My thoughts, and prayers are with her family (especially her gorgeous daughter Jade.)

Many of my old high school friends are dying from drug overdoses. Please people, wake up! You can die doing drugs. They seem like a fun escape, but it may be a permanent escape. She had no idea she was going to die that day. She just thought she was going to escape for a bit...

This story is very tragic, especially at the holidays. My heart goes out to her family. I don't know the cause of death, but even if it was drugs, it is still a death and a devestating loss to her family.
Too many young people are under the impression now that bad things can't happen to them. They escape once through drugs and live, so they think that they always will live after doing drugs. Things go wrong and you don't expect it. Please, if you have a loved one involved with drugs, please be their advocate and seek help for them. That is a horrible experience for anyone to go through.

The really tragic thing is many of her close friends, that will be at her wake and funeral, seeing her off, indulge in the very same life style. Dont let her death be in vain. Get help.

I know Melissa's mother. She is a very dear old friend and my heart goes out to her. I can't even imagine the grief she is going through.

I have seen these types of threads turn ugly. Please be kind and consider the feelings of those who are dealing with this horrible tragedy.

Maybe it would help these folks if the police department arrested them rather than giving them a free pass if they opt to go to the hospital.

I highly doubt that would help. If almost dying, and ending up in the hospital doesn't help, being arrested also wouldn't help. I'm sure most people that end up in the hospital due to drugs understand the impact afterwards w out needing to be arrested...

Well, we will have to agree to disagree. Have had an issue like this with a relative and after spending time in prison, after trying to pull off a robbery with the get away vehicle being a bicycle, they did receive the help they needed with assistance from the state.

Arrest them for what? It is illegal to posses drugs. Once a medical issue arises, the drugs are usually gone. No drugs, no case. There is no on scene test kit to test blood for drugs and a persons safety and treatment comes before prosecution.

I believe it is also illegal to possess drug paraphernalia is it not? In the case of heroin overdoses, in most cases there are needles laying around.

Drugs Suck

I think the worst part about hard drugs is not that they kill you but that they support the most evil people in the world. Every time people stick the needle in their arms, scum of the Earth makes a profit. That alone should be enough of an incentive to not do them.

Illinois law allows possession of up to 20 syringes if your 18 or older. Manpower issues will not allow an officer to stay with an od victim in a hospital while they are being treated because they are in custody for maybe a misdemeanor. Not going to happen in Crook County.

Drug dealers should be treated as a form of domestic terrorism. Put their butts away forever!!!!!! I say slaughter them, but liberals would try to rehabilitate.

a life lost

It doesn't really matter about the toxicology reports...whatever the reason, a life was still lost. A family is still grieving and missing their loved one. Yes, the report matters to the family so they have explanations and help in closure, but in the end, the reasons don't really matter. Prayers to the family.

I was a very good friend of Melissa and truthfully the Melissa I knew never did drugs. So maybe the person that wrote that thread about her friends living the same lifestyle doesn't know what she/he is talking about. I have been around Melissa for 7 years, I don't do drugs and as long as I have known Melissa I have never seen her do them. She did in fact have a heart condition. Instead of speculating maybe people should know the facts!!!

Seems as though this thread had turned into a forum about drug dealers and how they are the scum of the earth, I do agree, but I think we are straying from what the subject of this thread is......a wonderful, daughter, mother, sister, and friend whose life was tragically cut short for whatever reason and the wonderful person we have lost.

That always happens on Topix. It's sad that it has to be that way. I have known Melissa's mother most of my life and I am sure she is heart broken. I pray for her daily. For the sake of the people who knew Melissa and loved her, I hope that every one that sees this will consider that there are a lot of heartbroken souls out there because of this and just move on.

If they want to start a thread about drug dealers, then do so, but let this thread stand for folks who want to express their grief over Melissa's untimely death.
