DCFS, the police, physicians, nurses and teachers are damned if they do, damned if they don't. It is a wonder anyone wants to do these jobs at all.

Where did this happen, in Tinley Park? Does anybody know more about this story? It sounds horrible; makes you scared as a parent that a medical person can just call DCFS and they can take your kid away.
I had once a bad run in with DCFS. That was when my now 20 year old son was a toddler and was in the hospital. We took him to a hospital in Indiana on an emergency basis but wanted to have him transported to our doctor as soon as possible. The hospital refused even though our doctor talked with them. My son had been admitted for severe diarrhea and was now stable but the hospital kept being stuborn. So I took him out without the hospital's blessing and brought him to our doctor. The hospital called DCFS on us. They came to the house and looked at all the children. That's all they did, I guess we were lucky.

I think that this is atrocious when there are so many children out there who are really in danger. I have an Autistic grandson that I am raising. He constantly has bumps, scratched and bruises. Should he be taken from me?

Dealing with these cases for years, DCFS aired on side of caution, and a "safety plan" is just that: A plan. From this news article, it doesn't seem like the child was removed from the house and placed in foster care. I applaud DCFS for every case that's made public, hundreds of others make it through the system just fine, and children are well-taken care of.

DCFS erred on the side of caution. I agree with NF: the authorities are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

This is an example of the media drumming up excitement by reporting only the "juicy" information. Absolutely no one should be second guessing DCFS, the doctor, or the parents without full knowledge of the facts. Yes DCFS sometimes jumps the gun or overreacts. And yes, sometimes parents act in such a way as to arouse suspicion where none would ordinarily be warranted. I just hope the parents' attorneys have done their due diligence in examining the facts before filing the lawsuit. The State can hardly afford to be dealing with a frivolous claim, and I frankly don't feel like paying for it. If the case has merit, then kudos to the parents brave enough to call the state on inappropriate behavior - it will serve to protect all parents ASSUMING the state acted inappropriately.

where is the lawsuit? just think of the children getting abused 24 hrs a day? 2 many times dcfs don't step in when maybe they should. who knows this family's entire story. when teaching a child how to walk, all barriers should be cleared out of the pathway, that was mommy's mistake. the contract that they were "forced" to sign sounds like a good idea. dcfs, keep up he thankless job of protecting the future of a civilized society.

Good grief! I certainly hope you are saying this facetiously! Children just learning to walk can fall over their own shadows. Sometimes they get a bump or bruise. It's part of life.

They should be charged just for spelling the child's name Nataleigh!

But seriously, it does seem like they over reacted. Kids fall all the time and bump something. If this is the first time and she had no other bruises, there was no reason to take her away, even for a few hours.

This is great. DCFS has too much power for their own good. This type of practice is common place and I would like to see a class action brought against DCFS. These investigators think they can do whatever they want and whenever they want. There really needs to be stronger safeguards in place to control what these investigators can and cannot do. DCFS does have a purpose but a lot of times these investigations go to far and the rules are not followed.

Why are people complaining about DCFS? The DOCTOR thought it was abuse and had to report it. DCFS relies on medical professionals in making determinations. If a child is in temporary custody juvenile court must approve the temporary custody. A safety plan would have allowed the child to stay with grandma or aunt or family friend while the investigation is conducted. These people must have REALLY been uncooperative! DCFS has a tough job but they do it well.

DCFS does have a tough job but they do not do it well. I have seen too many parents taken advantage of by investigators that do not follow the rules and judge before they have any facts. This case is a perfect example of what happens to innocent families everyday. They really should change the name of the investigation process to judgment process because most if not all investigators assume the allegations are true before they even see or speak to anyone in the family.

I work in a hospital burn unit that frequently (2-3 times a week) admits a child who has clearly been physically abused. Often times there are signs of sexual abuse and neglect involved as well. DCFS investigators have the most thankless jobs around. I have seen them screamed at, spit on, lied to, and degraded all in an attempt to protect and potentially save the life of a child. They are underpaid and overworked. They show up in the middle of the night to help kids that everyone else has forgotten. Somehow these investigators manage to remain professional. As a nurse I can also say that I have never seen any medical professional I know just decide on a whim to call DCFS. Noone wants to take a child from a parent. Even in obvious abuse cases these children cling to their parents. Much thought goes into every referral that is made. I am sorry that these people were investigated in error but I wonder why now they see this as a lawsuit? Thank god their child is O.K. Many children are not.

I have seen just the opposite. I reported my daughter when her son was 10 months old. She and the babys father were both on drugs. They lived in his mothers basement and she paid no attention to what was going on. I went there at times to find the baby in his crib crying and hungry while the parents were passed out and grandma was in bed with her latest. When DCFS went there to investigate they sent me a letter saying that they found no grounds. O sure they called and asked if they could make a visit. No wonder it was found groundless, then less than 2 months later my daughter ended up in court mandated rehab and the baby was removed from the home and given to me. My daughter finally gave me guardianship while she straightend out her life.My daughter has been clean ever since. She got her son back in 1 year. Seventeen years later she has another child. The kids are now 18 and 14 and all is fine. No thanks to DCFS.

If this had happened to me I would have been very upset too but if my child had not been abused then I would have been confident that wouldn't find anything. I don't see the point in suing, money is not going to solve anything. Its kind of like making money off the child. Isn't it good to know that DCFS is doing there job and that they take even a little red bump seriously? I am sympathetic to the fact that the parents must have been distraught during those couple of hours but you file a complaint and try to forget about. This could happen to anybody so instead of trying to get money for it maybe just put it out there in the media to make other parents aware.

I worked as a police officer for 8 years in the suburbs of Chicago and I can't count how many times I had a call or a case that among other things, involved child neglect or potentially abuse and I was disappointed by the response from DCFS. Now, I'm bearing in mind here that I have had just as many calls or cases that were frivolous and merely fiction made up by supposedly abused children that were siimply angry at their parents and wanted to punish them. The problem I had was that whenever I contacted DCFS about a child neglect or abuse issue, I always sent them a copy of my report as soon as I got off the phone with them, a report which detailed the incident and explained why I believed there to be a case of neglect or abuse. Every single time I made such a report to DCFS, I always ended up getting a letter back from them saying they found no evidence of neglect or abuse. A case that comes to mind is one I handled a couple years ago where two very small children (ages 2 and 4 I think) were found just wandering the streets at night. I was called out there and I picked them up, but unfortunately they were unable to tell me who their parents were. Fortunately, one of my fellow officers recognized the children and knew who their parents were. The bad part is the parents were known problems in the community and had been arrested on numerous occasions. After several hours of attempting to locate the parents, and contacting DCFS at the same time, the parents finally showed up at our police department. According to them, the mother went to the store for some milk and left the boyfriend at home with the children. Well, the boyfriend fell asleep in his chair (I don't recall if he passed out from drugs or alcohol or if it was merely sleep)and somehow these small children were able to open their patio door and walk out. Now, bear in mind, we didn't hear from the mother for at least 3 or 4 hours before she showed up at the station and she claimed she was only gone from home for maybe 10 minutes. The question I posed to the DCFS case worker that I was in contact with about this was: Why weren't the police contacted the second she got home and realized she couldn't find her children? I'm sorry but maybe after a token phone call or two to a friend or neighbor to see if my children had wandered over there, I'd be on the phone with the police going out of my mind with worry. The end result of this case, the children were released back to their family and DCFS sent me a letter with the decision that there was no evidence of neglect or abuse. I'm no longer a cop and I can safely say that I deffinately don't miss having to deal with child abuse cases that go nowhere with an agency that is so broken because of overwork and lack of caring. And yes, for those of you who do support DCFS and their work, I do indeed understand that their agents are extremely overworked and it is incredibly difficult for them to effectively do their jobs. My biggest problem is if you have a police officer calling DCFS and telling them there is a problem, that pretty much goes above and beyond the typical "I want revenge against my ex" call.

The biggest drain on our economy is in the mismanagement and miss appropriated funds going into State Child Protection Services. With $70,000 to $140,000 a year jobs for the top guns of the state agency, and $100,000 C.A.P.T.A. funds available annually per child, is it any surprise that the administrative hearings adjudicating children dependent wards of the state do not require evidence of need to do so? After acquiring the number of children necessary to justify the budget required to operate on large enough scale to retain workers to keep the grants flowing, there enters the problem of silencing the children who want to go home. That is where the pharmaceutical companies step in. Utilizing expensive toxins, that disable the children and cause disastrous physiological changes to the human body, DCFS routinely punishes the children [no matter what the age] that do not readily submit to the program. The cost? In addition to ruined human potential, we have increased spending from Medicaid for "medications" that do not meet advertised expectations, and more prisons for all the dysfunctional adults the State is turning out. If Obama would do one great act as President of America, the greatest thing he could do is eliminate Dependency Hearings in Juvenile Court,(when a real case of abuse or neglect occurs it is prosecuted in Criminal Court) take away Psychiatry's license to practice Medicine, and cut federal grants to the states to limit the states to honest work.

Illinois DCF$ is GOVERNMENT wasting your TAX DOLLARS destroying INNOCENT FAMILIES with LIES AND HEARSAY.

Illinois DCF$ is GOVERNMENT at WAR with FAMILIES.

I want to hear that scumbag Erwin McEwen APOLOGIZE.
*
Illinois DCF$ is a corrupt, incompetent, renegade bureaucracy with a communist philosophy that uses Gestapo tactics under a veil of secrecy to operate above the law and outside the moral norms of society to harm children and destroy innocent families while wasting millions of the taxpayers money.

The last thing we need is more government psycho-psychiatrists, psycho-psychologists, psycho-therapists, psycho-counselors and psycho-caseworkers who would be out of work were it not for Illinois abducting children based on HEARSAY AND LIES, and HOLDING THESE CHILDREN HOSTAGE until the parents consent to be treated like laboratory rats undergoing psychological experimentation based on JUNK SCIENCE and VOODOO PSYCHOLOGY.

The state has granted the worst kind of people power far in excess of their intellectual capacity and moral integrity, and has created a bureaucracy that attracts the worse kind of sick sadists who perpetrate a fraud on the juvenile courts of Illinois with their lies and misrepresentation of families and conspire to defraud the federal government by holding children in foster care far beyond any reasonable need.

DCF$= Government at war with families.

We need laws with teeth to put any DCFS agent, enabler, cooperator or collaborator in PRISON for any abuse of power especially the seizure of children whose life is not in danger.

The HARM child protective services does to children with its wacko procedures and policies is well documented by intelligent researchers, but the political hacks and child traffickers are not going to give up all those $$$$$$$$$$ just because they are harming children.

Don't think the lazy, stupid caseworkers do anything in the best interests of the child. All they care about is their own comfort and convenience and all their falsified reports to make them look like heroes.

DCF$ makes me want to vomit.

The only thing I want to hear out of McKewen's mouth is how sorry he is for all the harm this agency has done, and apologize to all the innocent parents and children that they have victimized.

I want all those DCFS attorneys fired and DCFS to GET OUT OF DENIAL about what a bunch of lying rabid weasels they are and CONFESS and PROVIDE a forum to all the parents they have wrongly accused.

We need to investigate how CASA acts as a propaganda arm for foster care profiteers, and how they deliberately collaborate to destroy families. We need to have their secret reports professionally audited by someone completely independent and compensated by how many CASA volunteers they send to prison for LYING AND HARMING CHILDREN.

I curse DCF$- MAY GOD DAMN DCF$ TO H3LL.
