A Midlothian police officer who rose to the rank of deputy chief has been indicted on federal civil rights charges for beating and injuring two people, according to federal prosecutors.

Steven G. Zamiar, 46, is charged with two counts of violating the victims’ right to be free from the use of unreasonable force by an officer, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Zamiar, who joined the Midlothian Police Department in 2000, was a detective sergeant when the first alleged beating happened in September 2010, and had been promoted to deputy chief when the second happened a year later, federal prosecutors said.

According to the indictment, Zamiar used excessive force, resulting in bodily injury to a victim on Sept. 6, 2011, and again on Nov. 24, 2011. During the second incident, he allegedly “used, attempted to use, and threatened to use a dangerous weapon,” according to the indictment.

He was later demoted to lieutenant, and was placed on paid administrative leave in September, according to the statement.

Zamiar faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count. Arraignment will be at a later date to be determined.

Now what should be looked into is why the TWO previous Chiefs not only stood by and did nothing upon being informed of his wrong doings, they buried them, and steady promoted him. They not only allowed him to terrorize the citizens ( not just midlo) but his coworkers. Shame on you Burke and Schavone, you were not only told but it was proven to you. Vince, you should do the right thing, step down immediately and apologize for however much the two people who were injured by your personal errand boy will be costing / suing the Village your supposedly love.

Shavone and Burke should be named in the Suit also.Shavone has no balls to apologize, that's why he should go down too as an accomplice who knowingly and willingly allowed it to happen. Now maybe a lot will be able to see how Stephens "cared" about his community and let this happen.

There was a time when the people of Midlothian would have backed one of our own. By the majority of these posts the citizens of Midlothian are fed up with the bullies with the badges. As am I,

Not real sure who the new Chief is, but heard the guys are happy with him and that he treats everyone fair. Also heard he was the only one with the balls to cooperate with the FBI and make the truth come reality.

Why do some people dislike Fitzgerald? I've spoken to him a few times and always found him to be nice. Seems like a standup guy to me. I've met cops who I thought were jerks, but Fitzgerald never seemed that way to me. I'm just curious, I know not everybody will have the same experiences I do.

Where do you get your info from, the man has been disliked since being promoted to lieutenant where he did nothing but spend his day on Facebook. He didn't cooperate with the FBI, he hated Zamiar since Zamiar was promoted to Deputy Chief ahead of him. All he has done is show that he will not cover the backs of the guys that work for the village when they deserve that protection.

Here's what will happen in town now, mark my words. The police will have the feds down thier backs for every little thing that at some point they won't even be able to perform the job like they need to. You don't think criminals know that this is happening? Crime will go up and people will complain that the police aren't doing thier jobs when in fact when they were, they got fired.

The reason he is hated is because he is the main culprit when it comes to issuing tickets for "rolling" through stop signs. I had a run in with him over this where he out and out lied. I have also been told by several attractive ladies that he will pull them over with the intent of flirting with them. He is the prime example of a cop that should spend more time doing real police work and spend less time harassing law abiding citizens

Isn't rolling through stop signs against the law? Ever been almost hit by someone doing that? I know I have, and I'm sure you have a list of ladies that told you that, what a crock.
