well, if this was the catalyst to get the community organized that will be a good thing. It seemed like everytime someone brought up what was really going on in this town...people on this board had nothing but glowing reviews of the police force. Now it is up to the residents to demand that the Village Building Inspectors do work with the Crime Free Housing Unit to insurance that the laws are enforced so the criminal elements that are moving in are pushed back out.

There is no follow through regarding these policies---most times people lease a property under a different name & then you look on the mailbox & there are 6 other people listed....

It is up to the community to demand properties be kept up! Higher property value better quality renters...

Residents should also demand that they are notified when "bad" stuff does happen. Nothing was ever mentioned about those band of 6-8 guys robbing men from the train station a couple years back---1 guy had his skull cracked & jaw broken in 6 places whatever happened to that?

Also, the metra can add private security to so called hot spots

Hi guys I think it’s a shame our community is scared like this. That one creep can do this is so frustrating. I think we can all agree that the root of this problem is the alienation inherent to late stage capitalism. Over the past few decades, community groups and social organizations have been in decline as neoliberalism gained prominence. I propose that worker’s councils organize town security on their own, independent of the capitalist dominated “Midlothian Police Department.” It is only by organizing the working peoples of this town that an end to violence, be it physical or economic, can be assured.

Hi “you are correct,” I’m glad someone agrees with me about the need to organize. However, I think the goal should be to bring the entire working community together, rather than promoting potentially racist and classist housing policy.

The criminal justice system discriminates against minorities, with disproportionately large numbers being charged and sentenced for crimes like drug possession. This happens even though drug use is consistent across all races. Crime free housing worsens the inequality, punishing people even after the justice system is done with them. It is just another discriminatory policy that perpetuates white supremacy. While it is reasonable to be wary of “criminals” living nearby, we have to look at the systems that create and label the criminals. We should not fear our neighbors are criminals or bringing down property values because of their race. Instead, we need to recognize that we are all at the mercy of the forces of capital.

U.S. Urban Average.....Blacks make up 12% of the population, and are responsible for 48% of the violent crimes.....

Go Blue Forever, I’m wondering if you could provide a link showing those numbers?

I don’t know as much about violent crime, so I initially discussed racism inherent in drug charges. Human Rights Watch ( http://www.hrw.org/news/2009/06/19/race-drugs... ) has released reports showing that although a larger percentage and greater absolute number of whites have engaged in illegal drug use, blacks constitute 54% of all people admitted to state prisons for new drug offenses.

With numbers that skewed, I am hesitant about the entirety of the criminal justice system. It makes sense that police would protect those with property, but we have to acknowledge that in the US they also favor whiteness.

As we should acknowledge that greatest black shortcoming of all......the complete inability to take responsibility for either themselves or their offspring.....just talented apologists, like yourself.....

The village of Midlothian/PD can easily set up an alerts system for FREE in a matter of minutes, that will reach a large portion of the community.
1) Setup an OFFICIAL twitter account ie.@MIDLOalerts, etc.
2) Setup a Twitter Mail account to update the account via village email
http://twittercounter.com/pages/twittermail/
3) Post an message on the Village Website, and contact the Southtown, OF Patch, and other media advertising this temporary alert system.
4) Residents can simply follow @MIDLOalerts or whatever on twitter via website, or smartphone app. Even better residents can follow for alerts via TXT messages for near realtime alerts.
To get text messages they could do the following;
send a text message to 40404, with the body of the message "FOLLOW @MIDLOalerts"
you can easily stop alerts by messaging 40404 with "UNFOLLOW @MIDLOalerts"
You can also mute alerts, or UNSUBCRIBE all together.
This would seriously only take minutes to setup, and anyone who is the least bit tech savvy could do it.
Anyone who is familiar with text messaging, even if they are not savvy should be able to get the alerts using the SMS commands above.

As a Rock Island rider I follow a Metra account via text messaging to get alerts on delays, etc.
See this account here for an example;

Midlo residents on another note should demand that MPD switch their radio network from Blue Island dispatch to Southwest Central with Crestwood, Palos, ETC, and revert to unencrypted transmissions for dispatch. In doing so it will help keep concerned citizens aware of crime hotspots in the community, and add an extra set of eyes on the streets. MPD is on an encrypted trunk of the Cook County Sheriff's system now, and the public is blacked out from getting any unfiltered/realtime information regarding crime in Midlo. Take back your town, demand transparency.(Detectives and NARCS, SWAT should still keep their sensitive communications private, and that would be a reasonable compromise)
---
And for those speaking of a reverse 911 system, the towns that have it don't use it properly or to its full potential. Oak Forest for example has it, and only once used it for a police matter around 24hrs after the fact when they were searching for a missing person with dementia. Every other time they ALERTED us it was a call advertising a parade, OAK FEST, or some other crap that should be done via flyer or the cable channel only. Alerts for things like water main breaks (plumbing shutoffs), downed wires, or bad accidents shutting down major areas in town are never given, those and major crime alerts are what these systems should be used for.
I hope you catch this guy, and thank god for the silver lining that he attacked these women without a sexual assault. MPD better step up, before something even worse happens.
You have to remember that having an encrypted radio transmission also keeps the criminals from hearing where the police are also. This would make the town more vulnerable to crime then it would help. Criminals knowing when officers are down on calls would give them a huge advantage. Everyone on here bickers at one another instead of working together. None of you know what goes on and are the first to judge with 0 facts. Just because you don't see the police doesn't mean they're not there.

So your attitude is to just trust the police. They hide what going on in the neighborhood including the costs of lawsuits which they often loose. According to you there is no crime in the area because you don't report it! The problem with our local government is their failure to communicate with the people that live here. Tell me again why Sharon wants to be mayor ...

I'm not sure it's a great idea for the police to be doubling as a taxi service. Can't people call the MASH Bus if they need a ride?

MASH bus died with the car dealers. We do have a Bremen township car (it's a newer Chevy). I often see it in palos heights with only one person in it. I don't think they will come to midlothian because Crotty doesn't care for us.

And that's how we ended up with Hal as our police chief. Sharon's "guy". Dumb and dumber are running the town (not sure who's which?), or ruining I should say, and they can't seem to end this farce. Intelligent people solve problems, and intelligent people we do not have.

Hal dosen't care, he lives in Oak Forest. The deputy chief in New Lenox and all three detectives anywhere but Midlothian. The only vested interest they have to this town is their salaries.
