What ever happened to the "house of Hughes:?
Is the building still there?
One place that has been great for years is Jack Gibbons. What a steak.
The building is still there. They tried to just do banquets but I guess that didn't work out. The building is up for sale and has been vacant for a long time.

El Biancos was at about 63rd & Kedzie? Food outstanding...many courses. I have never tasted such delicious minestrone soup. A large tureen of it was placed on the table ...tempting one to over indulge when much more food was soon to appear. My husband & I took our children there & they too were graciously welcomed.

Well couple years late, but yes it was the Homestead Restaurant in Blue Island, IL. I owned it. Had from 1963 to 1995. Those were the days. Thanks so much for thinking our our Ribs.

Susan,

The kidney bean salad must marinate in the refrigerator over night preferably 24 hours before serving longer is better.

Too cool to stumble upon the recipe above! Will have to try it over the 4th of July weekend!:)

There are a couple of BBQ rib places in Midlothian such as Hog Wild which has been around for quite a few years around 149th and Pulaski and a newer rib place called Steer Hogs.

Just a few more ideas.

To this day we talk about the best ribs in the world were Homestead's in Blue Island. Began going there with my parents in the 60's. The kidney bean salad, cottage cheese, radishes appetizer was wonderful. Also, the restaurant did a huge carry out business, the bartenders were all women, the restaurant did a big bar business with great drinks. Everyone hustled in this pace, great wait staff and service. Since you were the owner can you please tell me where you can be reached. Sure would be nice to have a Facebook page where the history and memories of the restaurant can be shared. The House of Hughes had the recipe, or very close, heard the owner had once worked at the Homestead, of course they are now closed. In the restaurant business, hope to hear back from the owner of the Homestead.

Our whole family grew up on Homestead ribs and in fact had a reservation the weekend it suddenly closed ( a day early if I remember correctly) Your sauce is a constant topic of conversation, even between cousins who now live all over the country. Any chance we can have a peek at the recipe?.

Wow! Our family used to go to the Homestead every other Sunday, or so it seemed. I remember driving past the twin smokestacks by the incinerator at 95th and Stony Island, going to Blue Island on warm summer evenings craving those ribs. That was in the mid 60s.
Hi Phil HI Frank

We loved the sauce out of this world my wives grandparents went to the early- bird special and so did we.

I came close to the sauce once but HAVE been getting further away ever since what is the secret IN-Greed - Ent?

Thanks Dean
