The 2014 Annual Calumet Township Town Hall meeting which was scheduled for Tuesday April 8,2014 lasted seven minutes. State Rep 28th -Calumet Township Supervisor Bob Rita was not there. Bob Rita and his Calumet Township board should be ashamed of themselves. What do they have to hide? The Attorney General Lisa Madigan will be notified.

Global events effect you less than local events. You may want to take local politics more seriously. These local politicians are spending your money. A politician that doesn't show up for his own meeting is displaying blatant disrespect for his constituents. Stop defending stupid!

Your name is apt for the tunnel vision you have. Global events ALWAYS affect you more than local. Where did you learn your Civics lessons? In the back of a comic book? What happens around the world these days always makes waves in your life from how it affects the stock markets around the world to how much you will pay for gasoline and other products to take for granted. It will even affect your weekly check by what the government may increase in your taxes to pay for an increase in military spending. It affects eve what you see on TV or on-line. Because a local politician does not show up for a meeting is not the end of the world.....a war with the Russians could lead to one.

A war with Russia is out of your control. Making a local politician accountable for his inaction is more in your realm. An effect that may more likely affect you.

Name the meetings Bob Rita showed up to! So, Bob Rita doesn't show up to a meeting, because we have a conflict in Russia. In what way or role does that have do with not showing up to a meeting of the people who elected him? Global poltics have trickled down into cal park politics. Bob rita should be at that meeting.

Amen. Rita doesn't need his constituents - he just buses voters in ...time for a real representative that understands he is in office to serve the constituents... Not the other way around !!!!

local government has a much greater effect on the average person than any than global politics. local governments decide how much in taxes that you pay, how your children will be educated,.local governments have laws about how you park your car and many other daily activities some media tell stories were they can tell you how to fly the American flag. the last 10 years or so when the country was at war,
a federal act, how many people did anything locally, historically few people knew someone who actually served.

.it makes you wonder why they have this meeting at all, did they have to have this meeting to get paid. it makes one think, we don't need this government body at all.In times of tough budgets this looks like something to cut.

Voter apathy is a civic abdication. There is no other way to describe it.

If more Americans — particularly young people and less-wealthy people — went to the polls, we would have a better functioning government that actually reflected the will of the citizenry.

NOV 7, 2011 — REFORMSTOP ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS STEP UPSTREAMLINING BID

By Emily Miller
There must be a way that makes it easier to get rid of townships, say some key legislators. The BGA agrees.
Streamlining or eliminating township government: It’s an idea whose time has come to Illinois. In fact, it’s long overdue.

As the BGA investigation into 20 suburban Cook County townships uncovers, most are providing an expensive patchwork of road maintenance and redundant social services not mandated by state law while sitting on millions of dollars in excess taxpayer funds.

Cook County is not alone—townships across Illinois are being criticized as an inefficient and over-lapping form of government. Illinois has 1,435 taxpayer-supported townships in 85 of 102 state counties.

That prompts a basic question: Why do we need so many?

That’s a question the Illinois General Assembly must wrestle with in the upcoming fall veto session or when the legislature convenes next spring. Increasingly, some lawmakers and advocates are skeptical of the townships’ mission and wonder if they’re still a necessary form of government. For example:

A new law just signed by Gov. Pat Quinn gives board of trustees of a township in Cook County the option to submit a ballot measure giving voters the opportunity to eliminate the road district in their township. If voters say "yes," the road district and position of township highway supervisor will be eliminated.
Aldermen in Evanston, immediately north of Chicago, are looking for ways to eliminate Evanston Township, among the oldest townships in the state.
Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) sponsored a bill during this past legislative session that would give township residents a chance to determine whether they are being well served by their township government, or whether it would be more efficient to blend those services with the county or city government.
Yes, some townships can be necessary links between citizens and their government—particularly in rural areas where county and municipal governments cannot provide the community outreach needed to serve the needs of their citizens.

The prosecution of state and local political corruption became a "major federal law enforcement priority" in the 1970s.[11] United States v. Addonizio (3d Cir. 1971)[12] and United States v. Kenny (3d Cir. 1972)[13]—both brought by U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Herbert Jay Stern (later a federal judge)—were the first prosecution of political corruption pursuant to the economic fear prong and the "under color of official right" prong of the Hobbs Act, respectively.[14] Henderson describes these cases as the "New Jersey breakthroughs.
