Mr. Irving, please allow me to correct you. My husband and I were sound asleep that morning, and were awakened by the noise and lights of a stuck vehicle. You could hear that the vehicle was stuck and was attempting to rock itself out. I got up and looked out my frontroom window and saw that it was a plow truck that could not fit down the street because of the cars parked on both sides of the street, and it had attempted to turn into the alley and got stuck. We decided to go out and move our cars so that the truck could get through. Once our car was moved, the truck was able to continue down the street. Believe it or not, we were simply trying to do the right thing, not receive preferential treatment. Actually, had you watched an earlier portion of your tape, you would have seen the driver come up on to our porch and get our shovel, which he used to try to dig himself out. He then left it in the snowbank. At the end of the tape you can see my husband picking the shovel up and using it.
Let me see here... You state you were sound asleep and awakened by lights and sound of a stuck plow truck. You then state you saw that the truck could not get by your parked cars which then turned into your alley and became stuck. which is it you were asleep or you saw the events. If cars are preventing a plow from passing then a fire truck or ambulance surely could not pass as well. Citations and tows should have occurred if that was the case.

Streets with city employees, supporters, family members, elected officials, were paved. In some cases some received special perks, with portions of their alley and/or an area on their property paved also.
I know of an employee that I visit and that street was one of the worst, plowed only in center of street. And still has snow all over sides of curbs.
Guess that employee is not part of the "pizza lovers"

No, Florence St. has Not been totally repaved 3 years ago....I've lived on Florence for almost 10 and it has Definitely NOT been totally repaved anytime during the last 10 years. The alley behind Florence is all potholes though and have caused numerous flat tires. And, we've been lucky if a city snowplow has plowed Florence St. once during each snowstorm this winter.
I'd like to extend a big, big Thank You to the guy in the red coat who snowblows the entire sidewalk of Florence and many of the garage entrances up and down the alley and digs out several stuck cars each winter---all to help out those of us in need and some who are just too lazy to help themselves.
To Chris Irving, our neighborhood Snowplow Angel, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for plowing the alley and giving so freely of your time and equipment. Without your plowing the alley, most of us, if not all of us, would have been unable to get to our jobs during those snowy days.
The City can't keep up with plowing its streets so how could they be able to have the time/manpower to plow our alleys too? They're nuts and have a severe case of sour grapes for some reason. And yet, they want us to help out in the summer by cutting the grass at the unoccupied houses because they can't keep up with that either. You'd think they would be glad of any help, and unpaid help too. Helping each other out is what helps the town in the long-run.
It is great to have a neighbor that is a city employee. He was always on our block plowing
Our street and alley. He also got special treatment having new slab of cement in front of his home.

Are we going to keep airing everyone's dirty laundry. No one ever has anything good to say on this site. Nothing but bad news, whining and complaints.
Everyone hooked on social media now ?
How about doing something constructive. Many are complaining about this town, and that's all they seem to be doing. Why is everything constantly negative ?
Go out there and do something about the problems. Get together and work together. Anyone who tries to stop you from helping out, ignore them and continue with your collective efforts to make your community a little better one day at a time.
The negativity is counterproductive to a collective solution. Do not allow anyone to stop you from helping yourself or your neighbor.
Not slamming anyone here, but the constant comments and remarks will not get us anywhere.
Politics is local. Get involved and talk with the folks in your neighborhood. I am certain we all have neighbors who are not able to help themselves.
If Irving wants to provide a service to the folks in his neighborhood, then the folks who live there should give back by defending the man.
There is one other thing to keep in mind, this has been a very harsh winter, many of us became spoiled by the past few years of nicer weather. No one really saw this coming. It is not just Blue Island, on the news, they showed communities such as Naperville, Darien, Elk Grove etc, towns which are a little more well off, most of which ran low or ran completely out of salt.
Salt does not work when it is zero outside.
I am not taking any sides here, but those big trucks can not fit down the side streets, even with cars on both sides of the street parked all the way to the curb.
The big plows are for the main roads.
this is nothing new here folks.
Those who care will get involved at some point.
Winter is almost over. Warm weather coming, then everyone can start complaining about the water from rain and melting snow. Not long after, we can all get back on here and complain about how hot it is, and there's not enough cooling centers, then, after summer, we can all start complaining about the leaves not being raked out of the yards by the city.
Don't worry gang, before you know it, we'll be bitching about people's Christmas lights and decorations, then about SNOW, PLOWING, and SALT Issues again.
Here's a thought, fix what's right in front of you. Help your neighbor, and take care of the elders in your family or neighborhood.
Good day all.
Step out of "happyville" and open your eyes. Some of us are paying taxes for good city services and responsible city government. The problem is that since Vargas has been leading the pack there has been a considerable deficiency in city services and qualified personnel. Anyone with a brain can observe that. We are paying over $90,000 a year for a useless city manager like John Rita, instead of qualified personnel running each dept. There is a breakdown in the city services that we receive. You have idiots like Tom Hawley, who believes every resume that he reads. His mantra, no experience...your hired! Vargas should be in charge, but delegates his power to others. Bi-weekly Dept. Head meetings have stopped. Communication between departments no longer exists. Rita and Billoto make all of the decisions. So if you are still wondering why there is such anger within the Community, then may e you should read this negative little site more often.

THAT particular neighbor is Definitely NOT a city employee in any shape or form and THAT I know for a Fact. And, this particular non-employee but just a considerate and caring resident (there Are some around) did NOT get a new slab of cement in front of his home, so it's obvious you are assuming and jumping to conclusions when you don't know the facts. It IS nice to have a neighbor who is more than willing to help out in times of need just because he likes to help people. Too bad more people aren't like that.......

I apologize I just do not like being told I am wrong, when I know what I'm talking about. You would think I know who my neighbors are and when they come by in a City Truck plowing our area. Though I'm not complaining, we will be ready for this weekend. Feel sorry for all other streets that Dont get plowed. We on Wahl and Union are the privileged.

I am not ruining the privileges we have. I know what's coming this weekend and he will take care of us, so good try. Stock up on the salt again, neighbor.
