SPRINGFIELD, Ill.— State Rep. Robert Rita awarded a legislative scholarship worth $37,000 to the daughter of a Chicago alderman, the latest example of lawmakers giving tuition waivers to relatives of their political allies.

The 21-year-old daughter of Alderman Anthony Beale will be able to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for four years without paying tuition, thanks to Rita. The university will have to absorb the cost of educating her.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday ( http://bit.ly/zBrb0R ) that Rita and Beale have close political ties. The alderman has endorsed Rita in past elections, while Rita employs the alderman's wife part time and has donated $20,000 to Beale's campaigns over the years. Beale's home is in Rita's legislative district -- Chicago and its south suburbs.

Looks like our state rep got his hand caught in the political "cookie jar!"

This bum can scam a scholarship for one of his political buddies but will not score enough money to fix the damn bridges for his constituents. Nice. And who here said he was good stand up guy for Blue Island AND said he far better than Don Peloquin? He's a consummate political hack and narcissist as bad if not worse than Peloquin.

That's exactly why our Mayor was elected years ago. I don't agree with everything our administration has done over the years but until there is these so called "corruption" charges that I read on these forums officially brought up in court, I will continue to vote for the best available candidate at every election. People should specify in detail what illegal acts have been committed.

Unfortunately what we have here is that Bob Rita saw the legislative scholarships as a form of political currency. Bob looked at the scholarship and said:“This scholarship is f------g golden and I’m not going to just give it away.” Rather than asking the question of how this scholarship that was paid for by the tax payers could best serve the community; he used it to solidify and extend his personal political career.

Bob Rita knew full well that Alderman Beale and his wife together made over $200,000 which should have excluded their daughter from the legislative scholarship on the spot. If Bob had been concerned, he would have disqualified the Beale’s daughter because he is a close political ally of Alderman Beale it would have looked really bad. If Bob had been a good public servant; he would have given or split the scholarship to worthy minority students in Chicago, Blue Island or Alsip who have a real financial need.

I am sure that Bob Rita believes that he is playing by the Democratic machine rules of self preservation. In an effort to curb a personal public relations disaster; he used $60,000 of the tax payers money to hire Dick Devine to conduct an “internal investigation” into the booze/sex party at Memorial Park in 2010 that left Carlos Salgado dead. The results of that investigation were never released to the tax payers and certainly no one from Calumet Democratic Organization ever apologized for their behavior. In fact, Annie West, who was at the booze/sex party now works for Bob Rita.

This self serving attitude of personal entitlement has permeated every layer of government in our community. It has also nearly completely destroyed our faith in the honesty of our elected leaders. In the spring of 2011, Blue Island citizens were inundated by the campaign literature from the Calumet Township Organization run by Bob Rita. In the near future, Bob will come looking for our votes again. The voters need to insist on honesty and integrity from our elected leaders and throw the Calumet Township Organization campaign flyers in the trash.

Another way to stop this junk is to have all the college students within the district apply at his office. He will not want to p-ss off all the voters.

If Bob were a good public servant he would look out for the welfare of his entire district; not just the people who give him
campaign donations or his political bosses. A good public servant works for the whole community not just himself.

Bob Rita also voted for the "smart grid" that raised our utlity rates after receiving $2,000 in campaign money from the electric industry.(suntimes/11/4)

Obviously he has his eye on the political "cookie jar" on a regular basis.

How easily everyone forgets... Rep. Rita is the only one that brings any money from the state into Blue Island. He's gotten money to fix streets, grants for the parks, etc.
What has good ol' useless Monique Davis, who 'represents' most of Blue Island ever given to Blue Island??? She has done NOTHING for Blue Island. yet, no one ever brings her up. But that's ok though, right because she supports Peloquin...

The problem here is that Bob Rita puts the taxpayers money where it gives him the most political leverage. The scholorship that was given to alderman Beale's daughter didn't do anything for the tax payers and raising our tax rates for electricity didn't help us either.
That being said: no one in Blue Island should have any respect for Monique Davis either because she voted for the tax increase after receiving $1,000 in campaign contributions from ComEd as well.

After receiving more than 1,000 emails from you, lawmakers in a House committee passed a bill to eliminate legislative scholarships. Now it’s time to urge all lawmakers to vote YES on HB3810—a bill to eliminate legislative scholarships— when it comes to the floor. E-mail your representative, a copy will also be sent to the leaders of both the house and senate—Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Mike Madigan. Send a message to both the House and the Senate to continue demanding an end to legislative scholarships
