I go to Tinley or Hickory because the Pepes in town is terrible. The salsa is the worst I've ever seen, the drinks are terrible and when I ordered flautas the waitress looked at me like I was an idiot....um if you work there, you should at least know the menu.

At the very least the cooks and clean-up peeps have a nice house behind the dumpster to stay in. Just like Royal Palace, yes?

This new owner is playing with fire with the changes he has made at this storied location. First, the "steak" he has changed over from the old owner's recipe is not really "steak" per se. It is more like a blandish beef brisket, and it tastes nowhere near as flavorful and is not even close to being as lean as the old place's steak was. Secondly, he changed the tortillas, which I consider a huge mistake. The sift shell corn tortilla used to be white corn and absolutely delicious, whereas this darker one has almost a floury, doughy-when-wet texture to it that totally changes the taste of the taco. Lastly, I am happy that he is using the same legendary fresh pico/salsa recipe. That tasted great. And I actually like his chips better than the last version of the original owners'. The best chips were from over a decade ago, though - they used to be very light, crispy, and bubble-up in the middle. I have not tried the margaritas yet, but I highly doubt they will be as good as they used to be. Overall, I say this place is still better than a corner store type of place, but it is a shadow of its former self. The new owner probably hopes that enough time passes that people who were rock solid loyal to this place forget about what the food used to taste like.

Leave the Royal Palace alone. The Performance Party hopes to get 32 votes out of that no tell motel if things go right.

I've been going to the 111th street Pepe's since 1979. I loved it. It was the best Pepe's in the south suburbs. I tried it twice under the new owner and sadly, the changes are too much for me. The taco's, which used to be huge, are not anymore. The beef tastes different. The cheese on the beans is different. The steak is different. I am getting hungry but will now go to El Famous on LaGrange in Orland.

I too was a long time fan of Pepe's on 111th St. But no more, we now go to the one in Tinley Park on 159th St West of Oak Park, the service is impeccable, the food is far better, the margarita's are much better, you never have to wait for 45 minutes for your food to come out, the owner is always on premises and he really cares that your experience was a good one, not so much in Chicago Ridge, the new owner seems like he doesn't give a crap..........that's really too bad, he had a gold mine, but all he's giving his customers is the shaft.
