This 18 year old should be appropriately punished for his act, however he is only 18 years old and he and his family should not be vilified and humiliated in front of all their neighbors and community. I saw channel 12 news with camera lights shining on the parents house. This is totally unnecessary and heartless. Shame on Channel 12!

I KNOW THE FAMILY WELL AND I AM OFFENDED BY THE PRESUMPTION OF THOMAS' GUILT AND THE HARASSMENT BY THE MEDIA. WHY CAN'T THEY BE LEFT ALONE TO DEAL WITH THE LEGALITIES OF WHAT THEY NOW HAVE TO GO THROUGH? THEY HAVE MY SUPPORT AND LOVE.

I was shocked to see how News 12 behaved covering this minor occurence. News 12's violation of the privacy of the family and intrusion onto private property is nothing short of unprofessional journalistic behavior. That young man has not been convicted of anything.Last I h eard there was still a presumption of innocence in the United States however News 12 with Dolan at the helm is trying hard to reverse that. Let us not forget that Dolan and News 12 had the reporters remove the American Flags from their clothing after the tragic 9/11.Let us all rally around this young man and let the American judicial system do its job.

The taxpayers probably spent more to pay for police protection for the kid from the News 12 harrasers than the oranges were worth.Another example of wasted taxpayer dollars

I bet that family has a pretty good cause of action when News 12 trespassed on that poor family's private property. The kid may have his college tuition paid for by those dummies at News 12

How dare Laura Rivera, Newsday and News 12 do this to Thomas and the Wik family. Not only can they be charged with trespassing but also for harassment of the Wiks. Rivera, Newsday and News 12 don't even know the whole story. I love how Rivera assumes Thomas was not only the culprit but also alone in his actions. The law as of right now is going on an accusation pointing to Thomas when even his story checks out that he wasn't involved. There isn't even any credible evidence!! Do you know how many kids hang around in parking lots in Smithtown!? This really goes to show that our law enforcement is on top of things when you see them getting the "big catch" which happens to be an 18yr old who hasn't been proven guilty and is accused of stealing...oranges!! What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? It now seems as if it is guilty until proven innocent. I could go on about how twisted our legal system is but that is for another day. I say Laura Rivera should be suspended/fired for incompetent reporting and Laura Rivera, Newsday and News 12 issue an apology to the Wik family. The latter alone would even be acceptable. As a FORMER News 12 viewer and Newsday reader I am appalled at this injustice.

I watch the news to be informed of world and local news that will effect how I live my life. NOT to hear about a small local incident that the media inflates to get themselves "a good story" to put in their resume. Has Newsday and News 12 lost all sense of value? The real tragedy here is what they have done to an innocent teenager. Thomas is a hard working college student. He has held a job since he was old enough to work. He is quiet and respectful, and his friends are as well. Thomas is NOT the type of kid to get himself involved in silly crime. However, he IS the type of kid to step up to the plate like a responsible man and answer charges made against him by others. For this, he was judged in the media before his day in court. I wonder if Newsday even cares about who really committed this crime? Apparently not. In the meantime, Thomas, don't let them break you! I know this sucks, but you have your community behind you on this!

I actually knew this kid. He was obsessed with vandalism and doing "crazy punk things". The police knew about him from other instances and he liked to advertise his exploits to friends and social media. Despite all of his bravado he never had a backbone when it came to people confronting him about things he was responsible for. I heard about his tragic death, but, I never understood his obsessive behavior when it came to what he did. He was definitely guilty of this.
