My thought would be that they should do something, that is the most ridiculous excuse I have heard. I cannot imagine how p***** off I would be if I could not see my child graduate after 12/13 years of studying to get there. What a shame, and shame on you Dinwiddie High School.

This had nothing to do with VSU Mort, this was a Dinwiddie's issue. It seems you are making it a racial thing. Is that so??? They should have been proactive in regards to the amount of people who would be allowed to attend.

It was held at VSU. How does it not have anything to do with them? VSU was just as unprepared as Dinwiddie. Nothing racial about that. No A/C, allowing people to leave and NOT telling them they wouldn't be allowed back in...Its just as if you were to rent out the Siegel Center in Richmond...you agree to certain terms when you rent out a facility. Obviously Dinwiddie police had no jurisdiction in Chesterfield so security was left up to VSU. They couldnt bring along their A/C. Dinwiddie didnt forecast that many people showing up and neither did VSU. Lack of planning on Dinwiddie having it at such a small venue and lack of planning and/or action on handling the situation once it became a problem.

You would think that a high school administrator would be able to use simple math skills to determine how large a facility should be to allow all grads and invitees to view the graduation.

The Superintendent is a product of declining public education in this country!

Obiously, there are issues on both parts of the county's administration and VSU's. No one communicated on this at all. Someone could have gotten seriously hurt and from what I understand a fight broke out in the parking lot; VSU security was out there spraying mace and the wind caught a hold of it and went in the eyes of the principal which she had to go to the hospital. All of the could have been avoided if Dinwiddie County would get off of their butts and fix the football field. There has been ample time to do so. They talk about money issues well, every county has issues with their budget now-a-days; but you see Matoaca get a new fabulous school and football field; just as one example. I am so sick and tired of no accountabliliy on the county's part. This was not a well thought out plan. That is for sure. It is unfortunate that those parents missed this one in a lifetime event and at the very least Dinwiddie County can do is issue the tape and pictures free of charge to all of the parents of the graduating Class of 2010!!!! Let them take from their pockets and not the schools budget!!

Dinwiddie is more at fault than VSU. Dinwiddie should have known the seating capacity and ect. When my son graduated this year we were given 5 tickets. Only the parties with tickets could attend. Everyone was accounted for. This is such a awful situation. Especially NOT to see your child walk across that stage. The parent has put in just as much effort as the child to help them graduate. Also, VSU facility is sooo old. I would have never chosen that venue!

Pasted below is an email I sent to David Clark's, Superintendent of Dinwiddie School, Administrative Assistant:
Please relay this comment to David Clark. As a tax paying citizen, whose children have already graduated from DHS (thank heavens it wasn't this year) I feel his comment listed on Channel 12 News website, "Clark said that the county apologizes that it was an inconvenience for parents, but plenty of warning was issued ahead of time for the change in venue." was very inadequate and in no way an acceptable excuse for the horrible situation some parents and their children graduating were thrown into due to the lack of planning on behalf of Dinwiddie Schools. If you had given 2 years notice to those parents unless you put a plan in action for this not to have happened, it still would have. I cannot believe there was no foresight in seeing this sort of thing happening to these families. I mean these are supposed to be intelligent people making these very important decisions. It's pretty obvious that a suitable amount "tickets" should have been handed out to each graduating senior to give to invited family and friends to this once in a lifetime event. I cannot even begin to fathom the amount of anxiety, anger and disbelief I would be experiencing if my son or daughter would have completed 13 or more years of education and we arrived at this over a decade long preparation of work that was supposed to have culminated to a family celebration of accomplishment and pride; and then due to oversight and poor planning on behalf of the very school system I entrusted their education to I was prevented and blocked from watching and feeling the great amount of pride a parent gets from seeing that once in a lifetime event. This county owes every parent of and every graduating senior of the class of 2010 a huge huge apology and should try to come up with some type of restitution for those people involved. This whole incident has made our county a spectacle in the news and given folks cause to see us as a "back woods" type of community. I am very upset by this and disappointed in the way this was handled and then also by the very comments made by our school superintendent in the news.

Its obvious you can't read, learn how to read first, then reread the article, VSU was not at fault

I think it was poor organizational skills on Dinwiddie's part. It doesn't matter how many people a venue will hold, it should be by the matter of importance first. The most important was that the parents and family members were able to see the graduation in person. Each student should have been allowed so many invitations for their family and friends. It should have been by invitation only. That way it would be up to the graduates and their parents to decide who will attend the graduation. For all we know anyone that was bored that day could have watched an amazing graduation and prevented parents from seeing it. I think an apology isn't enough for these families. Dinwiddie county needs to make it up to the graduates and their families for this huge screw up. Dinwiddie County Public Schools are responsible for thousands of children every year. Well this is the time to show just how responsible they are and do the right thing for these families.
