The entire problem is most US govt agencies and state agencies are more of an impediment to progress than an aid.
The EPA needs to have it's charter rewritten so that it is an environmental aid agency to find solutions to problems and not just put up road blocks, baring that it needs to be gotten rid of and redesigned. You have people in many agencies that would rather see an industry destroyed to save one spotted owl or a some fish.

A car inspection in N.J. was a joke to start with.

They would toot your horn and drive your car backward and forward hitting your brakes only to make sure your car stops.

They never really checked for saftey, it was just a reason to make money and give some state worker a job.

Actually the inspections in NJ were pretty good for how fast they were, 4 skid pads to measure each wheels braking force which exposed bad brake cylinders or calipers, headlight alignment for out of whack beams, quick front end lift to check for worn ball joints and front steering components. The emissions sniffer is a hassle though, took people a couple of years to realize they needed a warmed up cat converter to pass and not one warmed up from sitting in the inspection line for 30 min where it would load up and fail.

Inspections are a good thing ... if properly done ... and annually is about the right timeframe.
That said, however, I still recall as a kid in the 1950's, when inspections were required every 6 months, my parents taking our old Chevy to the inspection station. They'd go into the office, the guy would ask the year, make and mileage, they'd tell him, he'd write up the inspection papers, they'd pay him, he'd come out and put the sticker on the car, and it would be "good to go" for another 6 months!

Pa was like that till the mid 70's when I transferred from NAS Willow Grove to the sub base in Groton CT but I transferred my registration from pa to nj.

Its YOUR responsibility to take the car to a reputable place. All inspections in all states are necessary if done properly. What is a matter with you people?????!!!!!
