This is such B.S. Did he charged for having a dangerous dog? What if it would have been a child that wandered in his yard?

If the problem is truly with hunters routinely trespassing on property, then do something about that. Don't take it out on the dogs that don't know about property boundaries! This is BS!

Relatives, friends and neighbors took the stand, testifying on Mullins' behalf, saying the bigger problem lies with hunters routinely trespassing on their property to poach.

So if these people were trespassing to poach, they wouldn't be hunters they would be poachers. Trespassing and poaching are both illegal.

Dog retrieval laws are just license to trespass. I agree it was d-bag move to kill the dog, but it was still his property. More imporantly, dog owners should keep their dogs off of other's property.

The dog went on the land not the hunters. The dogs were being tracked so they could be picked up for the night. Know the facts, nobody was hunting on his place. People live in the county to hunt and fish and be able to let dogs run if people don't like animals and nauture and neighbors there are pleny of places in town to live.

He should be in jail. No one should be allowed to shoot dogs that are not menacing or endangering anyone. Shameful.

It has nothing to do with animals and nature and neighbors, it has to do with private property rights. Keep your property off of other's property.

I recently had a dog kill all my chickens. I suppose you're going to tell me I should have to keep my chickens locked up? It's my property; keep your property off my land. I agree that it was a d#ckhead move to shoot the dog, but it still HIS PROPERTY. That is what this is really about. I'm sorry if it inconveniences hunters, but their rights end where other's rights begin. I should have a right to my own property.

The dogs were being used to "hunt" his land without the hunters crossing it. Then they can follow to "retrieve" their dogs.

I agree that the issue is the "hunters" running their dogs across his land without permission.

It doesn't matter if your property is posted or not, dogs can come on to your property and their owners can retrieve them with or without your permission.

the problem does indeed sit with owners "running" their packs on private land, without control or hunting without permission. keep your dogs on your own land, and try to follow the Va hunting guidelines like hunting only in season and during daylight hours. these rules arent followed very often in some counties adding to the problem.

IT DOES NOT MATTER:
http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/regulati...

18.2-136. Right of certain hunters to go on lands of another; carrying firearms or bows and arrows prohibited.

Fox hunters and coon hunters, when the chase begins on other lands, may follow their dogs on prohibited lands, and hunters of all other game, when the chase begins on other lands, may go upon prohibited lands to retrieve their dogs, falcons, hawks, or owls but may not carry firearms or bows and arrows on their persons or hunt any game while thereon. The use of vehicles to retrieve dogs, falcons, hawks, or owls on prohibited lands shall be allowed only with the permission of the landowner or his agent. Any person who goes on prohibited lands to retrieve his dogs, falcons, hawks, or owls pursuant to this section and who willfully refuses to identify himself when requested by the landowner or his agent to do so is guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor.

It is legalized trespass
