The wind turbine generator stopped spinning again on Friday.

For the second time in two months, the Portsmouth Wind Turbine Generator has stopped spinning.

“Due to recurring problems with oil pressure monitoring in the gearbox, the wind turbine is currently offline,” Assistant Town Planner Gary Crosby said in an e-mail Friday.

“We are awaiting analysis and recommendations from our operations and maintenance contractor and the gearbox manufacturer. The turbine will be back in operation the instant the problem is resolved.”

In May, the wind turbine, located at Portsmouth High School, shut down for several weeks after town officials were unable to find a “specialized part” needed for the turbine.

The turbine began spinning again in late May after workers installed a new oil pressure sensor.

Princeton Municipal Light Department, Massachusetts spent about $7,300,000 for two 1.5-MW Fuhrlander wind turbines. These turbines are a duplicate of the one owned by the Town of Portsmouth Rhode Island.

AAER and Fuhrlander are one in the same for Portsmouth, Rhode Island. AAER Wind Energy had partnered with Fuhrländer to manufacture the Fuhrländer 1.5 MW wind turbine on a license in Canada. The Portsmouth High School wind turbine is a 1.5 MW AAER.

The Portsmouth Wind Turbine has had multiple breakdowns in the past few weeks. One company offered to sell Portsmouth a new gearbox at half price ! It's looking like the Portsmouth wind turbine is going to need a new gearbox sooner rather than later !

"According to Mr. Schoeney, the light department is in debt for $600,000 for repairs to the gear box in one of the town's wind turbine transmission. It remains unclear about who will ultimately be responsible for the bill – the town or the company, Fuhrlander Wind Turbines of Germany. The turbine is expected to be back in service by the end of May and the company will do a diagnosis on the faulty piece of equipment back in Germany. In the meantime, the town has been responsible for seeking supplemental power through groups from other municipal light departments."
