i'm VERY happy with the board decision, but look: they're doing it at this time so the school can move into a new athletic devision, not because they suddenly obtained ethnic sensitivity. it's will be good for the school in the long run as more and more leagues and schools are coming down on offensive imagery (and it'll become more and more detrimental the longer they hold out). My only concern is that the board has maybe set up a have their cake and eat it to situation where they get the benefits of the name change but the pressure and anger from the name-change opponents gets aimed at the tribes.

i know that my dakota and lakota friends liked being referred to as such. Just an FYI for everybody, the man who created the name Fighting Sioux and paid 100 million for the arena with thousands of logos CELEBRATED HITLER'S BIRTHDAY. if that doesn't scream racism I do not know what does.
Henry Ford,(yes, that Ford. The car guy), was an admirer of Hitlers.
Have you ever driven or rode in a Ford? Then you must be a Nazi sympathizer as well.
And, have you ever used charcoal to grill with? Guess what....Ford invented it.
Ever bought anything made on a modern assembly line?
Ford was a pioneer of the assembly line.

Ever been camping?
Ford and Eddison made it popular.

So, if you ever grill with charcoal, drive or ride in a Ford, work on, or use anything involved with an assembly line, you are racist too.

Or, are you willing to admit your argument was silly.

If only this niokname and logo hadn't been used for the last 80 years, these tribes might be much better off today. Using a native American as a mascot is hateful and abusive--no matter how it's disguised in respect. Now that this insensitive expression of hatred are being retired, at least these tribes will have a chance. These tribes have been shamed long enough.
And let's not excuse the hateful cities of Sioux Falls, SD and Sioux City, IA. The racists in these cities should be forced to change their names, as well. These names bring disgrace to The Great Sioux Nation.
Go back, and re-read your post. Very carefully.
Didn't see what you did?
Let me point it out to you.

You claim that the tribes would be better off if the name Sioux hadn't been used. You call the people who live in Sioux Falls and Sioux City racist because the name Sioux is in the city name.
You claim Sioux is an "insensitive expression of hatred".

And yet, you end your post with the line, "These names bring disgrace to The Great Sioux Nation."

So, is it only ok for YOU to use the word Sioux?
Or, are you a racist and proud of it?
Or, are you just a hypocrite?
Or, are you just to stupid to realize you call people racist for using the word Sioux, when you have no clue what it means?
Or, are you a typical, "do as I say, not as I do" jerk?

Inquiring minds want to know.

ottermann: I think Arrogant American WAS being sarcastic. But AA will have to clear that up.
As for your Henry Ford argument ... the issue is that we're dealing with issues of ETHNICITY and CULTURE and IDENTITY ... so yes, the Hitler angle is a real issue in a way that it wouldn't be when deciding which car to purchase. Can a Nazi sympathizer invent an automobile? Yes. Is a Nazi sympathizer TRUELY interested in HONORING native people? That's not up to me to declare ... but from my personal experience, I wouldn't think that someone who seemed to appreciate Hitler's values would necessarily also be honestly concerned about issues of equality and diversity.

You're being sarcastic right.
You're from Shakopee? Perhaps your town is racist, as well. When you name things after Native Americans, you are expressing hatred.

"The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux (Dakota) Community is a federally recognized Indian tribe formally organized under federal reservation status in 1969. Chief Sakpe,[Shock-pay], which means the number six, spoke for a village that was located near what is today the town of Shakopee, which was named after him."

Yes, I'm being sarcastic.

If it is the word "sioux" they object to... Then why not go after the naming of cities and towns?

Sioux Falls?
Sioux City?

Do the names of these places offend them? If they do object, it would be the first I have heard of it.

Naming a city or team after Native Americans is not meant as an honor, it's meant as an insult. Before liberals pointed this out to them, Native Americans didn't even realize they were being insulted.

The people who object are white liberal pacifists and they object to the word "fighting" because it accurately describes the Sioux as a warrior tribe and "Sioux" because they've been told by their white liberal educators that the name is "offensive," even though 90% of Sioux call themselves "Sioux."

This is all about political correctness run amok, started by white liberals and the natives that they've managed to indoctrinate into white liberal thinking. If the reservation residents, especially the elders, were allowed to vote on it they'd overwhelmingly support the name and logo.

Every time I drive down minnehaha boulevard, I cry for the native americans mocked by this racist road. It sould be torn up and planted with native plants and grasses in order to atone for that horrible name.
