There has been a 102 page complaint sent to the Missouri Attorney General's office about this Native American Tribe, based in Clinton, Missouri. There have been complaints about subscribers not receiving newspapers they paid for, no reciepts received for donations, donations not used as the donor asked, officials not responding to requests for financial accounting, closed council meetings, ammendments to the NCN constitution without voting of tribal members, no elections since 1998 (constitution says every 4 years), missing tribal properties (such as 8 buffalo), and many more.
If you are a member of Northern Cherokee Nation of Missouri and Arkansas, based in Clinton, Missouri - you are urged to contact: [email protected] om or
[email protected] for a petition to demand an election of all tribal officers and to have the constitution changed back to what it was intended.
Be Cherokee and stand up for your rights. By the actions of a few we are all being dishonored.

It now has been more than a month since I sent the above posting to several newspapers in Missouri, Arkansas, School of Journalism at Clinton, Missouri and a couple of radio stations. I guess they are all afraid to get this truth out to the general public. What and who are they afraid of? One of the e-mail addresses in the former posting is an error, but I never asked the administrator of that site if it was okay to send his e-mail address. I don't know where Pevely, Missouri is - I live in Joplin, Missouri. I am not a member of NCN, but several members of my family are. I know the heartache and dissapointment they are all feeling because of this fradulant administration of NCN - which seems to be from the foundation. It is hard to realize that ones you had faith in have scammed you from the very first. We are waiting for the government entities that have been notified of the improprieties of the NCN in Clinton, Missouri to have time to review the complaints. It seems to me there are several governmental entities that have been scammed as well and they shouldn't look the other way. Some of that was taxpayers money - whether you are Native American or not. Wake up America! Where are the watch dogs??

I agree with this lady. I also know of many improprieties of this organization. It appears that this Northern Cherokee Tribe traded on people's knowledge of their Cherokee heritage, but unable to get into the NCN because our ancestors refused to go to OK many years ago when the Dawes roll was started. This so called tribe has had much money donated by members, and also many government grants. They seem unwilling to make an accounting of where the generous donations and grants came from and how they were spent. This is a 501 3 c not for profit organization, and therefore under the laws for non profit org, which includes a yearly report of all activities, money, expenses, etc. Beyond this, the Northern Cherokee tribe has allowed people who have no Cherokee blood participate in all activities, so long as these people pay money to this so called tribe. Even more than all of this, this tribe has made no effort to teach any Cherokee craft, language, dance, regalia, etc to the people. In fact, it appears the leadership has no knowledge of Cherokee ways either. What a shame for some to damage such noble and wonderful people who wish to know and embrass their culture. Shame, shame, shame.

The Northern Cherokee hierarchy, be that as they may, have lied to and cheated the tribal members and are now holding all our documentation hostage. The "chief" refuses to answer any of our questions about the state of tribal finances, has allowed non-Blooded people join for a price and have all the rights we who are Blooded are entitled to. He has dishonored all of us and removed 4 honored elders because they asked questions. He has dissallowed an election which is demanded by the NCN Constitution which he himself helped author. To make matters worse, he has no knowledge of Cherokee culture, and yet he has proclaimed himself as chief. What a sham! What a dishonor to the Cherokee people, and what an dishonor to our ancestors who suffered white man's inhumanity and fought back to retain their right to be a Cherokee!

Cannot the White River Cherokees do anything, they are a band of the Northern Cherokee tribe.

I really don't think White River Band can do anything, except have the "Northern" deleted from our name. I think We have been dishonored, enough, by the Workings of NCN. We are leaving as much as possible up to state and federal investigations. NCN will not correspond with us, anymore. Many of us have written and e-mailed them both at the headquarters and individually. NO response. Telephone calls only give us inappropriate or no answers. We have just received documents from Missouri Secretary of State, covering 1991 to date. They have operated as much as 3 years withoug filing annual reports and are on notice at this time. We need an election at NCN and council reports as well as financial reports. The NCN Constitution as well as Articles of Incorporation need a complete overhaul. The way these things read it isn't clear if the instigators even know if they are a corporation, tribe or nation. In one place it indicates that only residents of Missouri can be member of this NCN Tribe. Over time they have used more than one name on the enrollment cards. I have seen three different ones. In my opinion NCN should be shut down and members start from the foundation. Why carry this cancer with us. They have made us a laughing stock of Native Americans and the general population as a whold.

A member of NCN just e-mailed me, saying she had received an e-mail from Missouri Attorney General's office and they are presently investigating NCN. Pray for justice for all the NCN members!

Was it wrote in the old consitution that if one of the bands had trouble then they would go to one of the other bands? Three bands were form for the Northen Cherokee nation of Missouri and Arkansas Indians. Should not he White River have thier arms out and bring everyone into this band? I don't agree that the NCN tribe is a laughing stock, and feel that the other two bands should had step up and said a few things when they knew what wa going on.

To Don,
Well, the Northern Cherokee Tribe, Nation, Corporation, or whatever they are calling themselves, did allow non Cherokee people into the tribe through the "Sacred Smoke Society" They can be white, and still have the same rights as blooded members, but, of cour$e they mu$t pay $$$$$$.
As far as the White River Band goes, they will take any Cherokee that comes from or descends from their historical districts.
It is very shameful for any people to take such advantage of Cherokees they $ay they repre$ent. Where has the money gone?? The many donations, the grants? Where? How has any Cherokee that belongs to this tribe benefited? Has anyone learned the language?? Has anyone gone to the medical clinic they said they would provide? Where did the buffalo go? What happened to the gas station, and all of that equipment?? Where is the merchadi$se that was unsold from the gift shop? Where is the unsold furniture from the furniture store business? Why was the food program stopped, by the people who distribute the food?? Did the people in the office take the food meant for the membership and use it for themselves as we have heard?? Why does not the Chief, Deputy Chief, or any member of the "Leader$hip " have at least a workable knowledge of powwowing? Stomp Dance, etc.
So, Don, if you like this kind of people, hey, you hang in there with them. Don't forget to open your wallet often and give $$$$$. As for myself and other Cherokees I know, we were taught to walk the red road, and live with honor.
Don't you think we have made many attempts to contact the leadership?? We have. Now, I say, let the chips fall where they may. And they will fall, my friend.
Maybe you need to do some digging yourself. Maybe you need to find out why we are so upset.

I would also like to ask, which Constitution do you refer to?? Have you ever seen the ORIGINAL copy of this document?? This is to Don, or anyone who agrees with the Northern Cherokee.

Yes I send the old Constitution and also the one they have in placed now Drina, also I have never read or heard them over their while Chief Griggs wasa live every say they were or every provide any medical service to the members ,other then they had a person that would check eyes for glasses, if you can show me being from Missouri then show-me.
As far as I know the equipment for the gas station was still over their, but that was a few years ago and the big reason for not selling gas is the boys in Clinton could sell it at a lower rate ( they got together) and better to shut down if not making any money with it.
Would say hard to give food out when know one is giving it to you anymore, they had a deal set up down at Springfield with one of the food kitchens and then some of the people that broke away and started their own 3 person cherokee tribe started asking the same people forthe food and it just cause trouble and the NCN was cut off. Your right they sold off after some redneck shot two of them.
And maybe best that the people moved and become part ofthe White river band. What every happen to the Sac-band ?

We all have copies of the 1895 Constitution. We want to see the original.
It sounds as if you totally agree with what's happening up there, so have at it, my friend. For myself, I have a better road to walk.
You're right, we didn't go to any health clinic, did we? But, you see, my friend of much knowledge of the Ncn, or tribe or Corporation, etc. That was one of the many issues they used to begin the Corporation, they were going to have a health clinic for the people. That is a statement on the papers of incorporation, not my words. I hope the N. Cherokee is all you want from a tribe, but, my friend, it's not good enough for me. Wa Do. Creator watch over you and yours

I saw it one time the original one,and I think Chiefs Griggs brother has it. What good is it anyway didn't they write a knew one as far as the constitution goes.
If I recall their were a few that were going to the clinic in Tulsa and were using the NCN card and also Kansas city. As far as not good enough, what path are you looking at taking. As far as the Creator I always have my protection.

If they are open, they don't seem to want to answer any telephone, e-mails, or US Postal mail.
David Shaw says he got through to them a few days ago and what he reports that they told him is completely erroneous to their ammended constitution, about closed council meetings and how welcome all members are. However, one of the NCN members went to an attorney and that opinion is shaking. The 501(c)(3) corporation is not an Indian Tribe, but a whole different set of rules applies. Seems that NCN 'officials' of the corporation can do anything they please and tribal
members can go to blazes. Check it out! Your own attorney will confirm. NCN is just a social club not governed by any rules except what our chief, deputy chief and secretary/treasurer want to dish out to us.

I have been made to understand that there is not a Missouri State nor Federal recognized Indian tribe in Missouri and most probably never will be. But, you'd better believe there are Indians at my house, and I live in Missouri! As for the council meetings - Who knows when they are? The Constitution they are working with has an ammendment that states: "Open council meetings have been indefinitely suspended to be replaced with open tribal meetings for members to meet the council and ask questions after every council meeting." Can anybody come up with a date for NCN council meeting??

Please contact BT Crows, who moderates a web site all about what the NCher. are doing. I was dewy eyed, just you two gents, and it was a rude awakening. The government may not recognize the fact that Indians are in MO, but here I am, and I sure can prove I am Cherokee, actually, I can prove it through 3 ancestors. There is much work ahead to amend the many wrongs that have been done to us. If your heart is truly Cherokee, join with us. We want what is right for our people. Do you think we are imagining these issues?? My friends, open the good eyes Creator gave you and look for yourself.
Please contact
[email protected]

If you still think the NCN is not bogus, then I will not bother you again. Creator gave us each a heart and brain.
Most of ancestors came from AR, and later to MO. I assure you, nobody wanted this mess to happen. We are not the ones who did it. All that you read here can be verified.
Do as your Cherokee heart leads you. I want only the best for you. You are my brothers, if you are Cherokee. Wings of Dawn
