Apparently a farmer was burning in his field today... even though there's a wind advisory and a red flag fire danger warning today. The smoke is what caused the low visibility which caused the wreck... at least that's what I have heard.

I know it's more expensive to just disc the fields, but come on farmers... it's bad enough when you can't breathe because of all the smoke. Now you've got people dying because of it.

Several dead, at least 18 injured in Stoddard County wreck
Monday, September 6, 2010 ~ Updated 1:06 PM

Southeast Missourian
STODDARD COUNTY, Mo.-- An accident involving approximately 20 vehicles killed several and injured at least 18 Monday on Highway 60 between Dexter and Morehouse.
According to David Cooper, director of the Stoddard County Ambulance District, the accident was caused by thick black smoke over the roadway. A farmer was burning in a field nearby, Cooper added.

Five of Stoddard County ambulances are on scene, two were sent from Sikeston and one from New Madrid County. Additional medical helicopters were called to the scene as well.

"It's probably one of the worst accidents we've had in this part of the county in several years," Cooper said.

These farmers really need to pay more attention to what they're doing. Yeah, yeah, I get it. No farmers = no food. You know, if there was less farmers, you'd have a lot less competition and would probably get a lot better of a selling price on your product. I think it's time to start thinning the herd.

Oh, that's right... our tax money takes care of all that. I forgot.

The accident was just past the Essex turn off. We were on highway 60 just after the accident. Troopers allowed us to use the center media to turn around. We went back to the Essex turn off and used highway 114 to by-pass the accident area. We could tell it was a bad accident due to the amount of emergency vehicles responding to the scene.

STODDARD COUNTY, MO (KFVS)- A multi-car pile up on Highway 60 near Essex sends several people to area hospitals.

The crash happened around noon in the eastbound lanes. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a farmer was burning trash near some equipment and accidentally caught a field on fire.

The smoke from that fire was so thick, two or three cars crashed into one another. Then, a semi truck crashed into the back of that crash and eventually, 15 vehicles were involved in a pile up.

At least three people were air lifted to Cape Girardeau and Memphis hospitals. Several others were taken by ambulance for their injuries.

"Some people been throwed out on the ground," said Bob Carroll who was driving from Sikeston and was one of the first on the scene. "We didn't see it happen. We seen when we got up there and they had the road burns and everything. Another couple sitting in the car, they were able to talk. I found on little girl over there. She couldn't respond. She was hurt pretty good. I'm praying that she's ok."

Carroll is a volunteer firefighter for Bernie and says he's never seen a crash like this one.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 60 could be closed until 6 p.m. as emergency crews clear the scene.

Westbound traffic is moving in the area, but crews ask that you drive very cautiously through the area as workers are on the scene.
