I was on my way home from the office when I saw a house already elaborately decorated for Christmas, and just a few minutes ago I called one of my friends and he was in Wal-Mart buying Christmas decorations so they could put up their tree this weekend. My God people the kids haven't even finished all their halloween candy yet and you're decorating for Christmas???? I used to enjoy Christmas when I was younger, but as I aged, I realized that Christmas has went from being a happy time set aside to celebrate home and family to being an over comercialized, greed driven, grotesque, excuse for retailers to pressure people into spending more of their hard earned money. I have come to realize the all Christmas is anymore is greed driven ritual in which people spend money that they can't afford to spend, to buy useless junk, to give to ungreatful people who probably didn't want the crap in the first place. People at the malls and the stores fighting to get the last doll, or TV, or whatever is the "must have" gift of the season is, which will either broken, or tossed aside for the next big thing by February, are just disgusting. I have not been to a Mall or a Wal-Mart between Thanksgiving and Christmas in over 5 years, and know it looks like I'm going to have to quit going after halloween to avoid the rude obnoxious Christmas shoppers who would not hesitate to plow you over with their shopping cart to get the last sale item. So to all you Christmas junkies I say BAH HUMBUG!!!!!

You're gonna go to Hell for saying that. You'll be right there beside good ol' Saint Nicholas the pedophile. Come sit in my lap little boy. Huh? Oh, don't worry about that, it's just a roll of quarters.

Walmart gives me anxiety attacks year round, I hate that GD place. Boycott Walmart! |

I think your confusing St Nicholas with yourself when you used to work as a mall Santa. A roll of quaters is about the right size for you though. |

I agree for the most part. Christmas is over-commercialized nowadays, but it's still not going to stop me from celebrating. Of course, I don't overdo it as much as a lot of people tend to. A Christmas tree by the 15th of December, a few dollar store toys here and there (and maybe something special for each kid - but the problem is that children's toys break so easy, and there's no point in buying something that's hyped up because the kids aren't going to enjoy it any more than something less expensive.)
I used to work in retail, and I'll admit that the whole thing is a gimmick to put the books into the black and make the stores some profit. There are too many stores, not enough money to go around, and poor sales are a result all year. Christmas time seems to put people in the buying mood, and the stores will capitalize on that. On a side note, I think the worst part of working retail through the Christmas season is the music they pipe through the speakers every hour of every day from before Thanksgiving to after New Years. After hearing "The Little Drummer Boy" in its many variations, and OH PLEASE, not that damn "Santa Baby" song again... you tend to lose quite a bit of Christmas spirit. The bad thing is, I love Christmas music, but too much is too much. I enjoy the Irish Rovers too, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to them eight hours a day, five days a week... and then have to suffer through them on the radio all the way home. Last year I had five kids to buy for. The year before I had four. This year I have seven more than last year! It seems like more and more money will disappear from my pocket as the years go on. I enjoy buying presents, but the thing is I have to limit myself, because it's not like money grows on trees. I wonder if it might be better to buy a bunch of wood at the beginning of the year and craft my own toys! Too bad all anyone wants nowadays is electronic.
