Come on Carlsbad, we can't let Texas out do us! Here is our future! With all of the irresponsible parties involved in our sinkhole to be we may still be able to out do Texas! We have the NM OCD (the New Mexico Office Of Can't Do) Mr. Irby a guy that claims to be a victim while he made hundreds of thousands of dollars mining the salt brine, an RV park owner afraid to move there tenets, a feed store not afraid to have customers
come in, and a church inviting new parishioners to earth-shaking events!
No one cares. After all it may cost money to be safe so lets not do that. Come on Carlsbad, lets do the right thing.

The Oil industry uses the underground brine water to pump oil. I'm not sure exactly what they need the brine water for, maybe someone else can explain that. Anyway, they pump this "salt water" out of the ground, which in some cases leaves a large cave underground that eventually over time becomes unstable and collapses. We have the same problem in my town here in New Mexico and ours is under not one, but two highways. Oh well, we have our oil though and our precious gasoline to put in our cars and the oil companines keep getting richer and richer.....all is well in Amercia.

Answer to the question about what the oilfield needs salt water brine for...

Fresh water weighs 8.333 lbs per gallon.
Saturated Salt Brine Water is 10 lbs per gallon, the heaviest that can be saturated, and traditionally called "10 pound Brine".
The drilling rigs pump this 10 pound brine downhole to help keep unwanted gasses down while drilling ahead, and also the viscosity of the brine helps carry the rock cuttings up out of the hole and out to the mud pits. When the hole gets down closer to dangerously high pressure gas zones, the roughnecks "Mud-Up" the brine water with Barite Clays and other compunds to make the drilling fluid even more heavy and viscous to control the downhole pressures and gasses to prevent a "blow out". Most blowouts happen because the rig operators and oil company consultants misjudge or underestimate the dragon they battle.
Sometimes the fire breathing dragon wins...:O)

The situation in Carlsbad has brought alot of attention to our residents. Some overlook it and some have great concern about the damage it can cause and just glaze at the sinkhole signs. I think in my opinion the worst would be the canal getting taken out. The roads and businesses can be replaced, rerouted, rebuilt, whichever the case, but the loss of irrigation to the farmers from the canal would be the worst.

Obviously they are running the story concerning the recent brine well-sink hole collapses in Eddy county. And the immenent problem at the old brine well located across from walmart...the old Western Motors location. And if you go to the link, and watch the videos, this location looks a lot like a trucking company, brine well location, all though it does not state it in the video or the story.

I agree with "huh" and even though I understand the connection to the current situation, running an eighteen-month old article as "news" without any statement as to why just isn't responsible journalism. How about re-running the Kennedy assassination news? That was, what, 46 years ago this month? Hey, wasn't there an Apollo launch forty years ago this week that they could tell us about again? They wouldn't just re-run a story, would they? No. And that's what they're doing here - re-running an old story without any update or explanation.

To the Ohio "Huh" - good point. The C-A is running the story, so people see it and comment on Topix, not the other way around; sorry, Dixon, MO. But thanks for a good thought, well said, and without insults or attacks. Unfortunately for those of us on here from the civilized world, once again an interesting, somewhat intelligent discussion thread has been turned into an insulting, time-wasting, assault. ak-47culos with horrible spelling, grammar, and manners attacks a perfectly legitimate comment with obscenities and insults, then C-Hill follows suit and insults pretty much everyone. And another thread goes on my "do not bother to look at again" list. Thanks, morons. Thanks for reminding me why I'm glad to have left Carlsbad.

Such is the plight of the Current Anguish. Not much newsworthy going on around here. You'll have to excuse AK-47, he dropped out in the 4th grade. We don't have charm school here until the 5th grade.

The sad thing is the state of NM is a dumping ground for just about everything. If you want
it dumped bring it here. Its time that other
states take some of this stuff. But then NM is
such a small population there goes the revenue.
Where else can the state get any taxes from
for operations might has well shut down the state
and we all have to move some here else.
