I am planning on coming to Destin May 19th and I don't know if I should cancel my vacation. I can't find much information online and of course the lady I am renting my condo from doesn't want me to cancel. Any help would be appreciated!

We are in the same boat. We plan on going to Ft. Walton at the end of may. The lady we're renting from said it was pretty much a 50/50 chance as to whether the oil will make it to that area. I would really hate to have to head to myrtle beach instead.

I just canceled our May 21-25 reservation in Destin because of two factors: Even if the oil miraculously misses the beach the smell of the oil will probably not. Secondly, we are seafood lovers, and our favorite haunts which are already $$$ will probably be impacted to the point of impacting price, availability, quality, or all of the above. Bummer.

we are looking into changing our late may travel plans to stay on the east coast of florida because of the same. whether the oil hits destin or not, it's gonna reek up to a few miles inland.

We have been enjoying Destin for over 20 years. Love the beaches. We are going to cancel this year. So upset but we don't want to smell oil and see it in the water. Also, would not want to see the dead sealife. Moving to the east coast for our vacation.

We go to Okaloosa Island every year, but not this year until we know how the oil spill will impact our enjoyment of the Beach and ocean.

Yes, there ARE other things to do there, but that's not the point of going to the Ocean. My heart breaks for everyone who is financially impacted by the Tourist and fishing industry down there.

May God Have Mercy.

We were about to schedule something for July 4th and now I don't think we are going to. Going to schedule for somewhere else. I wonder if it would all be cleaned up by then?

I have to say this...
I am from Florida and was borne and raised there. I am currently in Illinois ( Untill I retire and move to Florida ) we come to Destin at Christmas for two weeks and in June for a week every year. At first we thought like some others have ( and some parts of me doesnt blame them ) cancel cancel cancel.... Then I started thinking you know all the times we have been down there and had a great time and at the first sign of adversity we back out the last thing the good people of Destin need is for everyone to haul a$$ as soon as something bad happens. That being said this doesnt mean I am going to be out on the beach cleaning up the oil when and if it hits Destin SORRY but I am on vacation. We will be comming down to Destin as planned oil be damned I am not letting it stop my fun and take my small amount of money I contribute to the Destin economy away. I hope many others do the same besides if everyone cancels and the oil doesnt hit or does very little damage just think how easy it will be to get around Destin when half of the peopl are there. sorry to rant but had to be said ...... This might be the worst oil spill we have had but by far NOT the worst just Google " Top 10 worst oil spills" and you will see it could be worse so we are still very lucky ... and one more thing Yes the oil spill is bad but remember 11 hard working men died and many more hurt in the explostion and fire that started this thing so some people have lost more than a vacation and the lives can't be cleaned up and those 11 guys brought back Destin will survive and come back if the worst happens so .........Viva La Destin

Thanks

We are dedicated fans of OLD 98 in Destin! & start vacation May 15th... We have decided to continue our plans & not be selfish.. We utilize this area year after year with our whole family! If everyone bumps their vacations-- the People of Destin and Okaloosa cnty will be hurting from it! This is part of History and we dont want to look back and think we were selfish and could not go help their community that will be in dire need for our business! We are now looking to see how we can volunteer on our vacation!
WE LOVE DESTIN TOO MUCH to Let Them DOWN!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Johnathan! I am not even from florida but, people come on we have got to realize what the media does to things I have a wedding planned for May 10thon the destin beaches...a wedding, not just any ordinary vacation. When me and fiance sat down to talk about we decided right then that we would still go, if we live in fear of what the media portrays things to be then no one would do anything, dont be wrong my heart goes out to the animals and people helping with this incident and it is a tragedy i just think people need to just look at the way things really are....the wind has shifted and it has been over a week and its not even to Pensacola yet. Go and have a great time!

Cristina there is a wealth to do in Destin even without the beach that is why we go down there for two weeks during Christmas as far as the sea food there will still be seafood it will just come from farther south in florida and might be a little more expensive the beer will still be cold and the weather will still be warm and like I said in my earlier post the oil might never make it to destin

I am heading to Destin Florida next Friday for my nephews wedding. I have never been to Florida or away from my kids overnight so I am so looking forward to this trip. I will not be cancelling my trip but have looked at the idea of helping, if needed, to rescue some of the wildlife. Ever hear of carma. Yes, this is the only time I have been away, by myself, for 12 years but I am going to make the best of it. If anything, I will be helping the community by not cancelling. Please help and keep your plans.

It is too early to tell what impact the oil will have. If your main object is to go in the water, you are taking a chance either way. But if you are coming mainly to relax and shop and the beach is just a bonus for you, it will be worth your while to come down.

We had reservations for the week of June 21st to drive down from Dallas (we've been the last 2 summers and LOVE IT) and i'm sorry but it's too long of a drive to take the kids on to possibly not be able to get in the water or have to deal with the smell. All our kids want to do down there is enjoy the beach and ocean and with the chance that may not be an option we had to pass. We cancelled and received a full refund. That area will be fine even if there is a slight downturn for summer and we'll be back next summer for sure!

DallasJD, that's nice that you got a full refund. I called the place that we're renting from this morning to see what I would lose...I'd lose my $300 deposit.

By the way DallasJD...do you know where you're headed to now since you cancelled?
We were planning on making the drive to Destin for 7/4 weekend but I'm still debating on whether to back out and book elsewhere or just stick with my reservation and see what happens. I too have a little one, so if we get there and the beach/water are out of commission...well, it wouldn't be much fun for her.

I will be posting local oil spill updates to my blog at www.knowthegulfcoast.com

no need to cancel. Weather is beautiful and water is clean and clear! Still to soon to tell if we will be hit but the weather is really working to our advantage.
