I can tell you that we just returned from the areas spanning from Gulf Shores, AL all the way over to Panama City, FL and it is hit and miss with the June grass and algae. And sometimes it was a matter of a short walk to find clear areas. I love the area and this is the first time I have ever seen it this bad, but it will not keep me from going back. Although I never got in the grassy water (because I'm a chicken of what I can't see around me lol) there was never a point in which you couldn't swim out maybe 30-50ft and be in clear blue water, and there are sandbars that you could stand on if you wanted, you just had to find them...there were usually people standing way out so you could tell that one was there. I would suggest a float or a noodle, if you don't want to be in the affected water, to get you beyond. While we were there it was the worst in the Destin/Ft Walton areas and Mirimar. Once we got into Panama City it was pretty clear with very little of anything in the water, except for the fish that wanted to nibble my ankles! From what I understand this could change from day to day, and I read an article from NY Times that explained some of this is due from the flooding that took place in the Mississippi River and all of the stuff that has been "dumped" into the gulf from the water run off that went through farm lands and such and picked up chemicals, fertilizers, manure, etc therefore aiding in the heavy growth. The water was unusually warm, but was still refreshing. If you still want to head that way, you can always go to Shell Island for the day or drive over to Pensacola or Orange Beach for your stay. Hope this helps anyone heading there this summer!

Here on 30-A you can usually find a beach area to avoid the June grass. ASK the locals....they know .. We talk about June grass like y'all talk about the weather!
