Looking to book a charter boat while I'm there on vacation... Any recommendations on boats to go out on?

Warning. Do not use Inshore Angler. Worst experience ever! Once you arrive you can talk to people and find that right one.

I would avoid the group that operates out of the little booking office. We booked there and went out on the anastasia. They missled us about the number of people who would be fishing on the boat, went from probably 6 to 10.When we got to the site they picked we were told we could only fish 5 at a time, because there were to many to fish at once,so we only fished 50% of the time and after spending time catching our own live bait,we were supplied with frozen bait.We were so looking forward to a fun day that we didn't want to be negative after spending $500 we didn't complain to ruin others trip. That was a mistake.Go down the dock to the area of privately owned boats and captains that actually care if you have a good trip. The next trip ,we found a locally reccommended captain on the back atcha boat and didn't travel out of site of land and caught our limit and the captain was very dilligent and had personal pride in his care of his clients. The little group controlling about 35 boats booked at the BOOTH could care less, they just want your money.Being from this area in childhood i was distressed to see this group ruining the reputation of a great fishing village.Oh yeah,i wrote the chamber of commerce and they were to lazy to respond or didn't care about the dissatisfied tourist and the ripoff and ruining of the fishing business.Support the few independent captains and boats left,we asked local people and they cared enough to hook us up to a good trip. The fishing is great, just look for the boats not controlled and owned by this group of cons.Oh, chamber of commerce,if you think this isn't important ,why was there no attendendace at the fishing rodea that was once a great draw for october.Wake up.We also heard they are making the few independents left pay over 8,000 dollars a year to dock,so they have to pay for months they can't fish,i guess they hope the few independents will die out so they can control all the business, even though they are ruining it overall.

This would be a sad end to a very successful fishing village that has prospered from the income for many years. It would be much more viable for the chamber of commerce to poll the people who have been ripped off and missrepresented from this charter group. The fish are there, its the actions of this group, wonder who owns them, that can ruin the ability of the good boat owners and independent fishermen because they are to AFRAID to confront this bad group ruining this economy.Destin still has a good group of captians with pride in customer service and years of experience.Maybye the city council should have their feet held to the fire in a public areana,on record.

I recently signed up for a 4 hour deep sea fishing trip with Harborwalk Charter Services, Destin, Fl. After paying $315.00 for 3 people, we were assigned to the Anastasia. We spent the first 30-45 minutes bait fishing. We then went to another area but it was still well within sight of land. We stayed in that same area the rest of the time. There were a total of (4) fishing poles for the (11) people assigned to the boat. Two mates did all of the baiting, casting and reeling- until a fish was on the line. They then handed the pole to one of the eleven to reel it in. Only 1-2 people at any one time were reeling anything in; the other 9-10 people just watched.

Harborwalk Charter Services does not advertise or tell you that you will spend the majority of your time watching the mates do all the fishing. Of course, you don’t know this until you’ve paid them and are far from the docks.

Upon returning from the trip I contacted Harborwalk Charter Services and spoke with assistant manager, Angie. She said she had no authority to do anything and when I asked to speak with someone with authority she handed the phone to her underling. Messages to the Manager (Francis Montalvo) and Harbormaster (Greg Featherston) have gone unanswered. However, I did get a call from the captain of the Anastasia.(Appears someone from Harborwalk gave him my personal information). He called me to argue. When I wouldn’t argue with him he then called me a “mother f _____” and hung up. It’s been well over two weeks now and I have yet to hear anything from Harborwalk Charter Services.

I will say that last year (2011) I went through them and was on the No Doubt. That was a good trip and was the reason I went back to them this year. I was told that the No Doubt is no longer in their fleet. Anyone wanting that deep sea fishing experience should be extremely aware of this outfit. Find out if you will actually be fishing the entire time or just watching others.

Please don't use the group of boats at destin harbour unless you can find the privately owned boats (they were trying to get them off the docks last year). The fleet owned by the charter group operated in a booth misrepresent the trip and could care less about your trip.We also booked the anastasia and they overbooked 10 people and we also spent time fishing for fresh bait,we never used this but used cut frozen bait, which wasted our time and then when we reached a site were told we could only fish 50% of the time we PAID for because the boat was overcrowded(more money for them). The deck hands were also fishing, instead of the paid customer, and the catch was pitiful. We asked locals and found the BACK_ATCHA a privately owned inshore boat and captain and caught our limit and he's very knowledgeble and local and we booked him again and had the same great experience. What exactly does the chamber of commerce do there?I tried contacting them also and they couldn't be bothered to return a call or e-mail.I grew up local to destin and was appalled at the scam.Support the locally owned boats and captains, you can ask the guys at sexton's seafood and they might hook you up.They also are where we have purchased great seafood for the last 20 years and they are local and the seafood locally caught). Its sad to see so many people continually scammed and the local goverment making no move to stop this when a great experience will bring many more to this great fishing area year after year.I wonder who the owners of this scam outfit are that they can keep operating? I would guess its the dock owners who are so greedy they will eventually ruin this business for all.
