I live six blocks from that intersection and have seen plenty of accidents at that intersection. That intersection is so dangerous that my childrens' school bus takes the circle instead of the rand and golf intersection. I'm glad they put a red light camera in. My husband routinely runs red lights and it scares the heck out of me. Maybe this will cause him, and others who run red lights to obey the red light signal. The only thing that I worry about is that turns on red are permitted at that intersection. How does the camera filter drivers who make legal turns on red at that intersection?
Des Plaines is not a hellhole. There are some very good officers who spend time being proactive in the community in addition to providing a quick response rate for 911 calls.
If you compare Des Plaines to surrounding communities, you will see that Des Plaines has the highest response rate. I've lived in Des Plaines for 37 years and have not seen officers lounging around at doughnut shops.

I have heard that red light cameras actually increase the number of accidents because drivers now slam on the brakes the moment the light turns yellow. I don't know if that's really true but its plausible.

As a matter of principle I have had it with the government sticking its nose into every corner of our lives. I will not spend another dime in DesPlaines until the red light cameras are removed.
