I really don't understand how you can suspend your fire chief and fire a volunteer firewoman. And what did they lie about? And who told him (the Mayor) that? And is it a reason for him to "fire" them? Again, they aren't employees. And from what I hear, it's hard to get people to volunteer their time for the fire department as it is. Why would you want to lose 3 people? That's 3 less people to help protect, or fight fires for the community. And to know that they are both females, and that the mayor doesn't like a woman in authority. I see only one firefighter resigned so far. I foresee the whole department quitting and then what is the mayor of DeSoto going to do?? Hope it's worth it

Luann, I don't know any of the circumstances leading up to this, but I do know that both would be considered city employees paid or not, volunteer or not. They would be considered an employee because they would be covered under the city's insurance policies. Sounds like you know maybe some of the details?

As a resident of DeSoto I am feeling very unsafe at this time knowing that our fire and rescue department is 3 members down. I understand that the Mayor stated that the council represents the city and that they are speaking for the city. Well they are NOT speaking for me and after talking to a few of my neighbors I don't think they are speaking for them either. I will be going to the next council meeting so I can represent myself. This city has some issues!

I wouldn't wait until the next city council meeting. I would contact your city now and voice your thoughts. I would also get your neighbors to contact them. Maybe with a little help from the townspeople, those members of the fire department will have a chance. Otherwise, sounds by what the mayor stated, he will use other towns to protect the city. Does that mean the other members of the department are out of a job too? Do what should be done now, don't wait!!

What is it that they have done to get fired and put on a leave? The news never really did say. And what is the mayor of DeSoto saying when he says the department has been doing their own thing without the guidance of the city? What does that say about the department, the past mayor, and others involved? Is the mayor a fire fighter? Has he had all the training that is involved? Does he know what it takes to be a volunteer, do get awaken at all hours of the night, to make sure he has what he needs to do his job? So many questions, so few answers. I guess if I was the firemen of that town, getting $5 a call for many hours of labor, having a new mayor who wants to come in and change everything, run everything and so on... maybe I would rethink my decision to be a "volunteer" firemen. I am glad we have a supportive council and community

We first need to know if the De Soto FD has seperate insurance policies before we determine whether a volunteer is just like a paid employee. Regardless a volunteer is just that a volunteer. They don't have to get up in the middle of the night or leave a family event to save a home from fire or a person from death but they do. And not because of a paycheck but because they know it's what they would want if it was them.

I think that the mayer should think about the people of the town instead of a power trip!!! He should also know what being put on probation meens before he takes action. i feel sorry for the fire chief and daughter for what happened to them after all the time they had put in.

I think people should get more facts before they get upset. The Council and the Mayor point blank asked the people involved if they contacted the Fire Assoc about breaking off from the city council control. They repeatedly denied it. The president of the assoc has told a council memeber that yes they did ask that very same thing. They are still denying it. The fire depatment has been asked repeatedly by the council to get it's house in order and they only give excuses. The fire department has been turned down for grants based on the sloppy record keeping and the problems. If you want the whole story you should listen to the tape that the city council makes of Every meeting.

the city had to pay for COD delivery of a radio becuase the people who repaired it had been trying for weeks to contact the chief to get it picked up and she never returned calls or emails.

There has to be something done.

you are so clueless, unless you were there to witness this, your statement is unfounded, and you should get your facts straight

I believe things like this happen more often than most people realize. Most small town FD's are becoming very hard to staff, especially during the daytime. Their operating budgets are slashed more and more each year. Still, the Chief, and members, who give much more than their time are expected to jump through hoops. Those hoops include outdated bunker gear and SCBA's. Some trucks are 20,30 and 40 years old. Why? Because the cities that receive money from townships they protect use that money to fix streets and sewers before reinvesting in their own fire department.
This is why members of a VFD seek guidance on their own to become seperate from the city they serve. Because they CARE and see the bigger picture!!
I don't know if the Chief lied or denied about seeking guidance from the IFA, but I do know the Volunteer Fire Service is also a brotherhood, and strong at that! Good luck Desoto, getting neighboring towns to just jump in and pick up the pieces!!!

I just moved to De Soto and have taked to some other people about the issue and from what I have heard. The chief and her daughter were a problem to start with and needed to go. So I think it is a good thing. And there are many people that I have talked to that want to join the fire dept but have not because of the chief and her daughter. So the problem with the low number of people I think will get solved pretty easy.

It is about time when you see a shake up of those who feel that they are entitled I hope they all get what is rightfully coming to them.

What do you mean "house in order"? Grants? I thought all the fire dept did was fight fires and save lives. How do they know how to do paper work for grants? Do they have an up to date computer that is programmed for this? Are they volunteers that work full time jobs?

The mayor is NOT a fireman. He's like 23 years old and thinks he's God because he's the mayor and precious little Daddy ran for Dallas Co supervisor and lost, but will probably get appointed. All the Chapmans are worthless, even the ones from Adel. Mayor is just on an ego trip.

Knowing the facts it has been handled in the right way as is my opinion,it's sad but sometimes actions like this has to be taken for the betterment of the department and the safety of the city, and by the way I am a fireman and proud of it!!!

Please note there are 3 different Chapman family's from the De Soto, Adel area. I am a Chapman from Adel who recently moved to De Soto. My family and I have never met the mayor of De Soto. I think we need to resolve this issue with common sence and knowledge. I do not feel channel 13 or the mayor of De Soto explained in detail why the city decided to make this drastic decision which puts our quite little community at odds and possibly not protected.
I beleive we need to get the facts from both sides instead of depending on hearsay, gossip and assumption.
The mayor is an elected official for the citizens of De Soto, I fell it is his reponsibility to give everyone in the community detailed information before the next city council meeting as to why he and the council have taken these drastic steps.
