Southeast Polk struggles with suicides

Sep 23, 2008 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Des Moines Register

Three teenage suicides in five months. One question: Why? Southeast Polk High School students wore wristbands in Kyle Johnson's memory when the football team captain shot himself before prom last spring.

i went to school in much harder times than all of you i pod toting, cell phone having, spoiled kids. we didnt kill ourselves, we dealt with it because our parents and school taught us how. now a days youve got no cut sports......no cut? r u kidding me? that doesnt represent anything in real life. you have to compete for everything in life. we worry about sheltering our kids from harsh realities of life, but then they cant cope with a big problem when it comes up, so we have suicides. dont spoil your kids!!! let them know life is real hard, nothin is free, rejection is inevitable, then maybe they wont kill themselves when thier girl)boyfriend break up with them. so dont say "dont talk about it" maybe if the families or frinde really knew what thier kids were able to deal with , they wouldnt be so clueless as to WHY/?

I'm embarassed to have attended the same school as you ignorant fools. Not a single one of you can compose a response without a misspelled word. If you think you have some divine right as a current attendee of SEP to dictate who comments on a suicide and who doesn't, you should be the one...nevermind. Go read a book or learn how to spell. Or better yet, do society a favor and get your reproductive organs removed. You're an embarassment to former grads.

i knew all the boys at sep that committed suicide in i went to all the funerals. it was hard for me to go through all of that watching my friends cry and the family of the boys who died. its a shame we had to lose such wonderful boys. they made a differnce in alot of peoples lives and the main boy i was close to out of them all was jeffrey he was there for me when i needed him most and helped me better my life and when his sister called me and told me what happend i was so crush i felt like my whole world had crashed and burned. it was the worst day ever. i felt sorry for his family his girlfriend and all his friends. and it breaks my heart to know that he has a little girl who will never get to know her father the way all of us did. he was a great person and a really good friend of mine and its hard on people when one morning you find out someone just killed themselves. its the worst feeling you can ever experience. and i agree that if you didnt know the boys then you shouldnt be talkin smack bout stuff you dont know. none of them were trying to get attention they just got it. they were all nice smart funny guys who were easy to get along with and fun to be around. they were the best guys i ever knew and i know that i will never forget them and how they changed my life they all changed peoples lives at some point or another and the people they helped or changed should never forget them either. we will always love and miss those we have lost. my god be with you guys up in heaven and i pray for those who have lost the ones they loved.

I also believe that if you do not go to this school and didn't face what we had to go through everyday knowing that a friend or a loved one that you saw yesterday has passed by a suicide or accident then don't judge us if you did attend our shcool and were not close to them don't act like you did know them. It takes a strong group of kids like us to cope with all the deaths that has happened and we have done an excellent job. Southeast Polk is the strongest high school i have seen. Every school may have some trajedies but they weren't like a daily routine like our school. There were so many rumors and gossip about it too. All these trajedies we have faced has only made each and every kid that attends this school stronger and it brought us all togethor. We are not a bad school because of these deaths It is just an expierence that no teenager in high school should ever have to deal with. Life is never predicting so things happen. Who are you to judge us? I was friends with every single person that has passed or got in the accidents and i miss them dearly! REST IN PEACE BOYS I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART AND YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I am VERY proud to be a student at Southeast Polk high school and I am proud to say that I bleed Black and Gold!!

I was very saddened to hear that so many teenagers would kill themselves. There were a couple that I went to school with that killed themselves and I think one senseless death is too many. My question is, some SEP students and alum say these tragedies brought the school closer together...but did it really? Or are you all back in your cliques and ignoring the other students who aren't quite like you or don't drive as nice a car as you? Are you all sitting at lunch together and seeing movies together or are you laughing behind the 'band geeks' back? Think about how you treat your fellow classmates and think if you really are a 'nice' person. If seeing all these young kids kill themselves hasn't made you treat ALL other people with kindness, even if they aren't 'your type' of people, then maybe YOU should shut the hell up. Oh and learn some GRAMMER!!

I say let the students talk about the suicides if it helps them I am a mother of 4 children I put through that school and my heart goes out to all you students that have been through so much. Jeff R. lived with us for some time and has been the best friend of my son's since elementary-he was a part of our family and is a huge loss to all of us. We as aprents and teachers need to be there at all times to help our own and others. I can say Jeff R. wasn't looking for attention like it was said he lost 2 major people in his family in a short time and we can all say he was one crazy but awesome kid and trust me we will always miss him forever. My son deals with this everyday and it will probably take alot of time if ever to get over with. Jeff R. just do one thing for us all keep your great humor going cause we will all see you again someday and most of all watch out for your beautiful little girl that looks so much like you will always be her daddy whether your here or there. RIP Jeff R. we all love you always and forever!!!!!

Sydney Paige! I totally agree with you! this is very hard on all us even if you have moved schools you no what has happened and it will always be a part of your life! you no the pain we are going through; and just today some girl stabbed herself in the upstairs bathroom. and someone found her before anythin bad happend! you went to this school and you no all these people who have commited suicide or have died in accidents. they will forever be in your heart even if you do move schools. you will always remember all the times you had with them and all the things they did in life. if kyle would still be here than he could have done amazin things. he was the best person i knew! and i loved him like a brother. he did so much. and he always new how to make you smile when you were down. i miss him austin, ryan, dylan, and jeff! they were all amazin people! and they will be missed teribly!

Ok I'm sorry but why in the hell would they do it for attention i mean would you kill yourself...so people know who u are and feel bad for u....whats the point he couldn't see it neither could the others. Dylan I get, he should of had the wrist bands and all of that...he did not want to die but no only the suasides get glorafied with that stuff...they inflict the pain on their family members and friends they go down all the others on the inside their hearts break. its just not worth it...life can never ever be that bad thats a permanant soulution to a short term problem... I go to southeast polk I am at the junior high and I hear this stuff all the time...why do we have violence..I mean cant we just all get along...Im not trying to be one of those happy no war freaks but why? i mean i think thats where the people wanting attention come in...threating school shootings or you just want a day off school? is that worth it, scaring all the parents and teachers? I just think south east polk is drama i have experienced enough of it already and im only in seventh grade i cant imagine how much worse it will be next year and the following...we just need to get this so called cloud away...away from all the new comers to the south east polk district and for the new high schoolers and junior high peeps be rolemodels... and colfax people it will affect you but your lucky you arent here feeling the real pain and those rumors about they just want attention is that they didn't want the attention the people that made it a big deal wanted it for them they had no control over it and i think just because you were popular you shouldnt get more attention everyone is a person and we all have the same rights were human who cares about social levels and that crap and get the hell over it people!

It becomes obvious that you left Southeast Polk at a critical time in your English career. Learn correct grammar, and people will probably respect your opinion.

I agree with both of the situations...I don't think the Star football player did this for attention but you need to think of how many other kids did this not just the star football player. Everyone sees how people reacted about star football player but do you ever think that they reacted that way because he was so popular and if someone from a differant click did this yeah people would be hurt but not react as much?? i think thats ssssoooo wrong. I knew the kid that just recently did this and that makes me ANGRY when people talk about this and they dont need to!!!! yep and i TOTALLY agreee that it CAN affect you in many ways although you don't go to that school! sooo...yeah just quit talking about this online!!!
I think the biggest thing is, he was more than just the star football player. Anyone who walked the halls with Kyle could just see how easily he could make someones day. He was a great kid, and a smart one too. He just didn't get the help that he needed. He put on his gameface every day, and he fooled all of us. I wish I had been able to see it, but that's hindsight bias for you. RIP Kyle, we love you.

It is all drug related. Every single one of them used(Even the "Star athlete"). So there is the lesson, Don't use drugs! Because eventually you life falls into the crapper and you think committing suicide will just fix it all. They need to get tough on drugs is what they need to do.
