Fantastic! Our state has just taken three large steps back. I guess Iowa will loose more freedoms because of ignorant bible thumpers.

This result is both unfortunate and extremely disappointing. It shows an extreme lack of understanding of the judicial process and also demonstrates lack of compassion for our neighbors. There is much work to be done to educate on both accounts. Thank you to the Justices for their dedication to the Constitution and for their service. They did not get the support that they should have.

I'm ashamed of our state. We have now set up a system where judges will have to campaign; but worse yet, we've just established a system where judges will be pressured to rule for what is popular, because they will always be watching with one eye on the polls.

What goes around comes around, and the same folks who pushed for this will have it come back and bite them in the butt when judges began ruling for the "popular" issues they don't like.

I can't believe the ignorance of the people in this state--that they would fall for the scare tactics of Vander Plats and his posse. Vicki is right that judges will now be forced to always think about whether they will be reelected anytime they make a ruling. Justice just lost tonight.

I write from Florida about your vote on the state supreme court justices. A judge is supposed to be completely independent of any political pressure. A judge is supposed to look at the state constitution to decide whether something is or is not allowed.

I'm shocked and greatly disappointed by this vote.

I see many comments that judges should not decide this issue. Judges did not decide this issue. They ruled that same-sex marriage is not illegal according to the state constitution. If you disagree with the law or the constitution, change it, but to vote against a judge who read the state constitution and saw that there was no part of the state constitution that could be used to disallow same-sex marriage is wrong.

You have voted against these justices for doing their job: they read and interpreted the constitution. They did their job -- and they did it correctly.

Ignorant Bible thumpers... Pretty sure this country was founded under God and the Bible. Your statement should also read "will lose" not "will loose".

To me this isn't about gay marriage. It's about judges legislating their opinion.

I voted no. Give me a vote on gay marriage and I'll vote yes.

I have news for you Jack, I'm not a "bible thumper" and I voted NO on all three. The laws that govern our conduct are created by the LEGISLATIVE branch, not the Judiciary. The Judiciary is not an equal branch of government. We VOTE on our representatives.

In two years, the rest of them will be held to answer. Perhaps they will figure out that Iowans decide our laws.

Good job Iowans.

Aren't you folks the ones that had trouble figuring out how to vote for Algore or Bush? lol.
I'm very proud of Iowans. Majority does rule in Iowa. Ternus deserved removal absolutely. She hosted an alcohol party on her property for underage drinkers. Her husband interfered with the police. Ternus refused to disclose where she was during the party. She is high and mighty - good riddance.

I hope that Culver goes out with a bang and appoints three moderate to liberal justices who wouldn't overturn the previous ruling.

I'm gay and an Iowan (and young) and I'm truly optimistic that I'll see gay marriage legalized not just in my lifetime, but in the next ten or so years. But setbacks like this suck. It would be terrific for Iowa to lead the way with gay marriage, because I think it's an amazing state with great people and I want coasties to know that. It's frustrating, though, that the people who are most angry for being perceived as ignorant yokels then turn around and promptly dispel any evidence to the contrary.

Go [gays]!

GO [IOWA]!

Congrats to the rednecks, white trash, born-again nutjobs, and Bob Vander Plats. Your lack of compassion and your ignorance is stunning.

People do you think by ousting these Justices that the next Justices that come in won't have the same opinion? People who oust any Judge or Justice out it is because they don't like the outcome. It comes to show what kind of IDIOT people we have in this country that they have no clue how the laws work. DUMB DUMB DUMB PEOPLE!

Iowans should stand proud. The majority has spoken. I would bet plenty that the negative posts about this result are the same Democrats that were all about the Socialist Obama being elected. They don't like the majority rule, they want the liberal rule.

In two years, let's continue the removal of the judges who think they exist to make our laws. They don't

Those of you that think the law in Iowa is that marriage is between a man and a man or a woman and a woman are sadly mistaken. The law defining marriage is still on our books. The high and mighty court isn't so high and mighty - are they!

Glory to God.........

Lev 18:22-23 "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." Lev 20:13 "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death." 1 Cor 6:9 "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals" 1 Tim 1:9-10 "realizing the fact that (civil) law is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers" Rom 1:26-27 "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error."

The people have spoken. Time for the elitist judges to understand there is a constitution and that government is owned by the people. The gay $$ to buy elections do not matter.
