FDA spokeswoman Morgan Liscinsky said the agency strives to balance the need for blood with the need to keep the supply safe. She wrote in an email that men who have had sex with other men continue to have the highest rates of HIV infection. Such men represent about 2 percent of the country’s population, she wrote, but in 2010 they accounted for at least 61 percent of all new HIV infections.
Liscinsky noted that the FDA also requires that blood donations be barred from other groups of people, including those who have used intravenous drugs, worked as prostitutes, have hepatitis or traveled to countries with high risks of malaria or mad-cow disease

Not right, but I can understand how you could misread that data.

@ 60% of all NEW cases of HIV infection are among MSM (not necessarily gay), mostly poor, innercity persons of color.

What this means is that the young ethnic population isn't getting the message, aren't educated enough to understand the message, or are just not listening.

Remember, too, that the data is collected mostly from innercity free clinics, so the data will tend to be skewed in the direction of those populations.

I happen to agree that restrictions on donation are necessary, but the current ones aren't entirely rational.

Incorrect, the ban is on those who have anal intercourse, that includes a lot of heterosexual women.

You can't lie about your blood type, they can test that more easily than they can test for rabies.

Not a legitimate one if they tested all blood the way they are supposed to. Think of the stuff the FDA allows in foods and other stuff that has caused cancer in lab rats. This is nothing other than homophobia. By banning gays for really no legitimate reason they send the message that all straights are disease free which is NOT true.

Nope. You just go off half cocked on every topic don't you? I went into the hospital back in the early 80's and ever since then I have been asked to donate my blood. I did until the ban on gay blood, and then I quit. I said they asked. I did not say I provided. You fell right into that one didn't you? I wouldn't give blood if they did lift the ban, except to friends and family members. My blood is as pure as can be, and you bigots can die a horrible death, and I still won't provide it.

I remember back in the early 80's at he beginning of the AIDS issue; sodomite militant groups were threatening to donate blood to deliberately donate blood to poison the whole blood supply.

Aren't those people so tolerant and caring!

Then shouldn't we just test all blood, rather than trust what donors claim about themselves? What good is a "ban" which relies on self-reporting, if something like that is possible?

You should also remember that back in the 80s, gay men were not allowed to donate blood, and yet there was a huge amount of AIDS infected blood in spite of that ban. You idiot, you aren't old enough to remember the 80s.

Yes we can. No ban can stop us. Better test ALL the blood!
